    Los neumáticos fuera de uso representan un componente de contaminación a gran escala debido al actual crecimiento de los neumáticos por su utilización en la industria automotriz y de transporte, el cual es generado por su inadecuado desecho o almacenamiento luego de terminada su vida útil. La vida útil de un neumático es de aproximadamente 18 meses y se encuentra afectada principalmente por la exposición directa al sol, el agua y el contacto prolongado con derivados del petróleo, así como también, la presión de aire de trabajo, la temperatura, la correcta pisada de operación, el estado de las vías y los diferentes tipos de pavimentación. Las llantas son fabricadas a partir de materiales que toman mucho tiempo en descomponerse. Al final de su vida útil. Por su inadecuado proceso de disposición, muchas de ellas llegan a los rellenos sanitarios, donde, debido a su volumen, ocupan demasiado espacio, además de que se convierten en hábitat para la incubación de insectos transmisores de enfermedades contagiosas, como el dengue, el zika o el chicunguña, mencionando también que algunas son quemadas y otras son almacenadas a cielo abierto incontroladamente lo que genera una contaminación adicional a lagos, ríos y lugares comunes

    Análisis de la interacción entre las autoridades monetaria y fiscal en Colombia (1991-2011) : una aplicación desde la teoría de juegos

    RESUMEN: Este trabajo considera las interacciones fiscales y monetarias en Colombia cuando la autoridad monetaria es más conservadora que la fiscal. Utilizando herramientas de teoría de juegos, se estudia el periodo 1991-2011 con el fin de analizar cómo los cambios institucionales en el manejo de los hacedores de política pueden afectar la función de bienestar social. El mejor resultado se obtiene cuando ambas autoridades siguen una regla. En cuanto a los juegos en dos etapas, cuando se presenta liderazgo de la autoridad monetaria, los resultados son menos deseables que cuando ambos agentes actúan de manera discrecional (equilibrio de Nash), debido a la influencia que tiene el gasto público sobre la inflación. El modelo utilizado parte de un escenario con una economía cerrada y en competencia monopolística, por lo que el mejor resultado posible es el denominado “second best”.ABSTARCT: In this paper we consider monetary and fiscal interactions in Colombia when the monetary authority is more conservative than the fiscal one. Using game theory tools, we examine the period 1991-2011 in order to analyze how the institutional changes in the handling of policy makers can affect society welfare function. In two stages games, when the monetary authority's has the leadership, the exercise concludes that this result is less desirable than when both authorities act in a discretionary way (Nash equilibrium) due to the influence of public spending on inflation. Also, when both authorities follow rules, this exercise presents the best results in terms of social loss function. The used model is based on a scenario with a closed economy in monopolistic competition, so the best possible result is the "second best"

    Neural correlates of episodic memory in adults with Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease

    Background Adults with Down syndrome are at an ultra-high risk of developing early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Episodic memory deficits are one of the earliest signs of the disease, but their association with regional brain atrophy in the population with Down syndrome has not been explored. We aimed to investigate the neuroanatomical correlates of episodic memory in adults with Down syndrome and symptomatic Alzheimer's disease. Methods Single-center, cross-sectional study. A total of 139 adults with Down syndrome (85 asymptomatic and 54 with symptomatic Alzheimer's disease) were included in the study (mean age 43.6 +/- 10.9 years, 46% female). Episodic memory was assessed using the modified Cued Recall Test. Immediate (trial 1 free immediate recall, trial 3 free immediate recall, total free immediate recall score, and total immediate score) and delayed scores (free delayed recall score and total delayed score) were examined. Cortical thickness from magnetic resonance imaging was determined with surface-based morphometry using the FreeSurfer 6.0 software package. The clusters of reduced cortical thickness were compared between symptomatic and asymptomatic participants to create a cortical atrophy map. Then, the correlation between cortical thickness and the modified Cued Recall Test subscores were separately assessed in symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects, controlling for age, sex, and severity of intellectual disability. Results Compared with asymptomatic participants, those with symptomatic Alzheimer's disease showed a pattern of cortical atrophy in posterior parieto-temporo-occipital cortices. In symptomatic subjects, trial 1 immediate free recall significantly correlated with cortical atrophy in lateral prefrontal regions. Trial 3 free immediate recall and total free immediate recall were associated with the most widespread cortical atrophy. Total immediate score was related to posterior cortical atrophy, including lateral parietal and temporal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, precuneus, and medial temporal lobe areas. Delayed memory scores were associated with cortical atrophy in temporoparietal and medial temporal lobe regions. No significant relationships were observed between episodic memory measures and cortical atrophy in asymptomatic subjects. Conclusions Different episodic memory measures were associated with cortical atrophy in specific brain regions in adults with Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease. These results overlap with those described in sporadic Alzheimer's disease and further support the similarities between Down syndrome-associated Alzheimer's disease and that in the general population

    Clinical and biomarker changes of Alzheimer's disease in adults with Down syndrome : a cross-sectional study

Studies have assessed Alzheimer's disease in individuals with Down syndrome, but the natural history of biomarker changes in Down syndrome has not been established. We characterised the order and timing of changes in biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease in a population of adults with Down syndrome. We did a dual-centre cross-sectional study of adults with Down syndrome recruited through a population-based health plan in Barcelona (Spain) and through services for people with intellectual disabilities in Cambridge (UK). Cognitive impairment in participants with Down syndrome was classified with the Cambridge Cognitive Examination for Older Adults with Down Syndrome (CAMCOG-DS). Only participants with mild or moderate disability were included who had at least one of the following Alzheimer's disease measures: apolipoprotein E allele carrier status; plasma concentrations of amyloid β peptides 1-42 and 1-40 and their ratio (Aβ), total tau protein, and neurofilament light chain (NFL); tau phosphorylated at threonine 181 (p-tau), and NFL in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); and one or more of PET with 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose, PET with amyloid tracers, and MRI. Cognitively healthy euploid controls aged up to 75 years who had no biomarker abnormalities were recruited from the Sant Pau Initiative on Neurodegeneration. We used a first-order locally estimated scatterplot smoothing curve to determine the order and age at onset of the biomarker changes, and the lowest ages at the divergence with 95% CIs are also reported where appropriate. Between Feb 1, 2013, and June 28, 2019 (Barcelona), and between June 1, 2009, and Dec 31, 2014 (Cambridge), we included 388 participants with Down syndrome (257 [66%] asymptomatic, 48 [12%] with prodromal Alzheimer's disease, and 83 [21%] with Alzheimer's disease dementia) and 242 euploid controls. CSF Aβ and plasma NFL values changed in individuals with Down syndrome as early as the third decade of life, and amyloid PET uptake changed in the fourth decade. 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET and CSF p-tau changes occurred later in the fourth decade of life, followed by hippocampal atrophy and changes in cognition in the fifth decade of life. Prodromal Alzheimer's disease was diagnosed at a median age of 50·2 years (IQR 47·5-54·1), and Alzheimer's disease dementia at 53·7 years (49·5-57·2). Symptomatic Alzheimer's disease prevalence increased with age in individuals with Down syndrome, reaching 90-100% in the seventh decade of life. Alzheimer's disease in individuals with Down syndrome has a long preclinical phase in which biomarkers follow a predictable order of changes over more than two decades. The similarities with sporadic and autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease and the prevalence of Down syndrome make this population a suitable target for Alzheimer's disease preventive treatments.     Association of biological sex with clinical outcomes and biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease in adults with Down syndrome

    The study of sex differences in Alzheimer's disease is increasingly recognized as a key priority in research and clinical development. People with Down syndrome represent the largest population with a genetic link to Alzheimer's disease (>90% in the 7th decade). Yet, sex differences in Alzheimer's disease manifestations have not been fully investigated in these individuals, who are key candidates for preventive clinical trials. In this double-centre, cross-sectional study of 628 adults with Down syndrome [46% female, 44.4 (34.6; 50.7) years], we compared Alzheimer's disease prevalence, as well as cognitive outcomes and AT(N) biomarkers across age and sex. Participants were recruited from a population-based health plan in Barcelona, Spain, and from a convenience sample recruited via services for people with intellectual disabilities in England and Scotland. They underwent assessment with the Cambridge Cognitive Examination for Older Adults with Down Syndrome, modified cued recall test and determinations of brain amyloidosis (CSF amyloid-beta 42 / 40 and amyloid-PET), tau pathology (CSF and plasma phosphorylated-tau181) and neurodegeneration biomarkers (CSF and plasma neurofilament light, total-tau, fluorodeoxyglucose-PET and MRI). We used within-group locally estimated scatterplot smoothing models to compare the trajectory of biomarker changes with age in females versus males, as well as by apolipoprotein.4 carriership. Our work revealed similar prevalence, age at diagnosis and Cambridge Cognitive Examination for Older Adults with Down Syndrome scores by sex, but males showed lower modified cued recall test scores from age 45 compared with females. AT(N) biomarkers were comparable in males and females. When considering apolipoprotein.4, female.4 carriers showed a 3-year earlier age at diagnosis compared with female non-carriers (50.5 versus 53.2 years, P = 0.01). This difference was not seen in males (52.2 versus 52.5 years, P = 0.76). Our exploratory analyses considering sex, apolipoprotein.4 and biomarkers showed that female.4 carriers tended to exhibit lower CSF amyloid-beta 42/amyloid-beta 40 ratios and lower hippocampal volume compared with females without this allele, in line with the clinical difference. This work showed that biological sex did not influence clinical and biomarker profiles of Alzheimer's disease in adults with Down syndrome. Consideration of apolipoprotein.4 haplotype, particularly in females, may be important for clinical research and clinical trials that consider this population. Accounting for, reporting and publishing sex-stratified data, even when no sex differences are found, is central to helping advance precision medicine

Spain was one of the European countries with the highest incidence during the first wave. As a part of a consortium to monitor and study the evolution of the epidemic, we sequenced 2,170 samples, diagnosed mostly before lockdown measures. Here, we identified at least 500 introductions from multiple international sources and documented the early rise of two dominant Spanish epidemic clades (SECs), probably amplified by superspreading events. Both SECs were related closely to the initial Asian variants of SARS-CoV-2 and spread widely across Spain. We inferred a substantial reduction in the effective reproductive number of both SECs due to public-health interventions (Re < 1), also reflected in the replacement of SECs by a new variant over the summer of 2020.     A multi-country test of brief reappraisal interventions on emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world

    Effect of Fiber-Matrix Interface on the Mechanical Response of a Woven Carbon Fiber/PEEK Composite Material

    This work studies the relationship between the interface shear strength (IFSS) and the mechanical response of a carbon fiber-reinforced composite with a polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) thermoplastic matrix. Two types of laminates were studied: the first kind was manufactured with as-received fiber fabrics, while specimens belonging to the second one were fabricated with thermally treated fibers where the original sizing agent was removed. IFSS values were measured with the push-in test, showing that treated fibers exhibit a 25% higher critical shear stress. Microscopic inspection of the laminates revealed that untreated specimens were prone to debonding, generating a much higher crack density. This difference was detected by the C-Scan technique and triggered in the response of both laminates under tensile tests at &plusmn;45&#8728; fiber orientation, where maximum stress and strain at break values of desized specimens showed an increase of 37% and 190%, respectively.
