    Reimagining the language of engagement in a post-stakeholder world

    Language matters in shaping perceptions and guiding behaviour. The term stakeholder is widely used, yet little attention is paid to the possibility that its use may inadvertently perpetuate colonial narratives and reinforce systemic inequities. In this article, we critically examine the limitations of the stakeholder concept and its ambiguity, normativity, and exclusionary implications. We emphasise the importance of using language that gives a voice to marginalised groups, promotes inclusion and equity, and fosters meaningful and reflexive participation in decision-making processes. In critiquing the use of the term and calling for alternative practices, we aim to contribute to the decolonisation of research norms and the creation of more inclusive and equitable societies. Therefore, rather than advocating a single alternative term, we suggest a focus on the people, places, and species affected by decisions, interventions, projects, and issues

    Fabrication of sub-5 nm uniform zirconium oxide films on corrugated copper substrates by a scalable polymer brush assisted deposition method

    We demonstrate a polymer brush assisted approach for the fabrication of continuous zirconium oxide (ZrO2) films over large areas with high uniformity (pin-hole free) on copper (Cu) substrates. This approach involves the use of a thiol-terminated polymethyl methacrylate brush (PMMA-SH) as the template layer for the selective infiltration of zirconium oxynitrate (ZrN2O7). The preparation of a highly uniform covalently grafted polymer monolayer on the Cu substrate is the critical factor in fabricating a metal oxide film of uniform thickness across the surface. Infiltration is reliant on the chemical interactions between the polymer functional group and the metal precursor. A following reductive H2 plasma treatment process results in ZrO2 film formation whilst the surface Cu2O passive oxide layer was reduced to a Cu/Cu2O interface. Fundamental analysis of the infiltration process and the resulting ZrO2 film was determined by XPS, and GA-FTIR. Results derived from these techniques confirm the inclusion of the ZrN2O7 into the polymer films. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray mapping analysis corroborate the formation of ZrO2 layer at Cu substrate. We believe that this quick and facile methodology to prepare ZrO2 films is potentially scalable to other high-κ dielectric materials of high interest in microelectronic applications

    Aging, working memory capacity and the proactive control of recollection:An event-related potential study

    The present study investigated the role of working memory capacity (WMC) in the control of recollection in young and older adults. We used electroencephalographic event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the effects of age and of individual differences in WMC on the ability to prioritize recollection according to current goals. Targets in a recognition exclusion task were words encoded using two alternative decisions. The left parietal ERP old/new effect was used as an electrophysiological index of recollection, and the selectivity of recollection measured in terms of the difference in its magnitude according to whether recognized items were targets or non-targets. Young adults with higher WMC showed greater recollection selectivity than those with lower WMC, while older adults showed nonselective recollection which did not vary with WMC. The data suggest that aging impairs the ability to engage cognitive control effectively to prioritize what will be recollected

    Transcribing "Le Pèlerinage de Damoiselle Sapience": Scholarly Editing Covid19-Style

    This article describes a methodological experiment conducted during the 13th Annual (Virtual) Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, November 18–20, 2020. The experiment consisted of a “relay style” event in which three teams transcribed, revised, and prepared for submission to this journal a full edition of the “Le Pèlerinage de Damoiselle Sapience” and other texts from UPenn Ms Codex 660, ff. 86r–95v within the three-day timespan of the conference. The project used methods typical of crowdsourcing and drew participants from all over the world and from all different stages of their careers. After one group completed its work, the results were passed into the hands of the next. The final result—in the form of a finished manuscript edition, ready for submission to Digital Medievalist—was presented on the last day of the conference. The main purpose of this experiment was to demonstrate how the work of the transcriber and editor might be structured as a short-term digital event that relied wholly on virtual interactions with both the source materials and among collaborators. This method also reveals the positive aspects of the many challenges posed by working simultaneously, remotely, and globally

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    Examining the impact of dedicated missing persons teams on the multiagency response to missing children

    Some police forces are investing resources into dedicated missing person teams (MPTs) to improve risk assessment and responsibility sharing across partner agencies. This study used police records and interviews with representatives from police and partner agencies in one UK region to provide the first systematic evaluation of the impact of implementing a dedicated MPT on the response to missing children. Results revealed a reduction in reports and change in risk assessment practices post implementation, along with suggestions that the MPT brought about more of a child-centred approach, a pushing back of responsibility to care providers, and greater personalised communication with children and care providers. However, improvements needed to be made to intra- and inter-agency communication, and consideration of resources across shift patterns. Findings pose important implications for informing decisions regarding allocation of finite resources and improving multiagency response to missing children

    Abstract Hematologic malignancy is a risk factor for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) in adults; however, data specific to children with leukemia are limited. High‐quality infectious adverse event data from the ongoing Children's Oncology Group (COG) standard‐risk B acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (ALL/LLy) trial, AALL1731, were analyzed to provide a disease‐specific estimate of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection outcomes in pediatric ALL. Of 253 patients with reported infections, the majority (77.1%) were asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic (CTCAE grade 1/2) and there was a single COVID‐19‐related death. These data suggest SARS‐CoV‐2 infection does not confer substantial morbidity among young patients with B‐lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (B‐ALL/LLy)

    Fabrication of high-κ dielectric metal oxide films on topographically patterned substrates: polymer brush mediated depositions

    Fabrication of ultrathin films of dielectric (with particular reference to materials with high dielectric constants) materials has significance in many advanced technological applications including hard protective coatings, sensors, and next generation logic devices. Current state-of-the-art in microelectronics for fabricating these thin films is a combination of atomic layer deposition and photolithography. As feature size decreases and aspect ratios increase, conformality of the films becomes paramount. Here, we show a polymer brush template assisted deposition of highly conformal, ultrathin (sub 5 nm) high-κ dielectric metal oxide films (hafnium oxide and zirconium oxide) on topographically patterned silicon nitride substrates. This technique, using hydroxyl terminated poly-4-vinyl pyridine (P4VP-OH) as the polymer brush, allows for conformal deposition with uniform thickness along the trenches and sidewalls of the substrate. Metal salts are infiltrated into the grafted monolayer polymer brush films via solution deposition. Tailoring specific polymer interfacial chemistries for ion infiltration combined with subsequent oxygen plasma treatment enabled the fabrication of high-quality sub 5 nm metal oxide films
