    The Phillips curve and information rigidity in Brazil

    This work aims at testing the null hypothesis of no sticky information against the alternative of sticky information using Brazilian data. The rejection of the null hypothesis allows us to derive the expected time between information updates. The median of market participants' predictions collected by Gerin/Bacen is used as a proxy to firms' expectation contained in the sticky information version of the Phillips curve. Our estimates imply that inflation expectations in Brazil are updated about once each five quarters, which in part can be attributed to reduced uncertainty about Brazilian inflation in the period of analysis.O objetivo deste trabalho é testar a hipótese de ausência de rigidez de informação no Brasil. A metodologia permite também derivar a frequência de reajuste informacional via Curva de Phillips sob Rigidez de Informação. Para tanto, a mediana das projeções de mercado divulgadas pela Gerin/Bacen são utilizadas como proxy para as expectativas contidas na curva de Phillips. As estimativas obtidas são consistentes com o modelo e implicam em atualização de informação a cada cinco trimestres. Portanto, o período de atualização de informações estimado para o Brasil é próximo de alguns estimados para países europeus e norte americanos, o que em parte pode ser atribuído à redução nas incertezas inflacionárias brasileiras no período de análise

    Protective Human Leucocyte Antigen Haplotype, HLA-DRB1*01-B*14, against Chronic Chagas Disease in Bolivia

    Chronic Chagas disease consists of four different forms categorized on the basis of their clinical manifestations, namely; cardiac, digestive, cardiodigestive and indeterminate. In Latin America, there are 8–10 million seropositive persons who are at risk of, or have already developed serious clinical complications and who have limited access to effective treatment. The cardiac and digestive forms are characterized by tissue damage caused by persistent infection of Trypanosoma cruzi and are thought to be modulated by host immunity. In our large scale screening for chronic Chagas disease in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, hearts and colons of 229 seropositive patients were examined. We found 31.4% of patients had abnormal electrocardiograms (ECGs), 15.7% presented with megacolon, 5.2% had a combination of abnormal ECG and megacolon, and 58.1% were of indeterminate status. Previously, we attempted to ascertain whether parasite genetic polymorphism might account for the differences in clinical manefestations, by analyzing parasite DNA taken from the same study group (with the addition of a further 62 megacolon post-operational patients).     Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    This article empirically analyses the Purchasing Power Parity s condition in Mercosur. More specifically, it verifies ifthere is a long run equilibrium between the exchange rate and the internal and external price indexes difference using the cointegration analysis method developed by Johansen. Based on monthly data mostly related to the 90's, the results do not confirm the PPP theory in its absolute and relative versions. Although, they suggest that eventual misalignments in currencies real parity were followed by some nominal exchange rate corrective policy, without interfering too much in the countries natural competitiveness

    Role of ion hydration for the differential capacitance of an electric double layer

    The influence of soft, hydration-mediated ion–ion and ion–surface interactions on the differential capacitance of an electric double layer is investigated using Monte Carlo simulations and compared to various mean-field models. We focus on a planar electrode surface at physiological concentration of monovalent ions in a uniform dielectric background. Hydration-mediated interactions are modeled on the basis of Yukawa potentials that add to the Coulomb and excluded volume interactions between ions. We present a mean-field model that includes hydration-mediated anion–anion, anion–cation, and cation–cation interactions of arbitrary strengths. In addition, finite ion sizes are accounted for through excluded volume interactions, described either on the basis of the Carnahan–Starling equation of state or using a lattice gas model. Both our Monte Carlo simulations and mean-field approaches predict a characteristic double-peak (the so-called camel shape) of the differential capacitance; its decrease reflects the packing of the counterions near the electrode surface. The presence of hydration-mediated ion–surface repulsion causes a thin charge-depleted region close to the surface, which is reminiscent of a Stern layer. We analyze the interplay between excluded volume and hydration-mediated interactions on the differential capacitance and demonstrate that for small surface charge density our mean-field model based on the Carnahan–Starling equation is able to capture the Monte Carlo simulation results. In contrast, for large surface charge density the mean-field approach based on the lattice gas model is preferable.ISSN:1463-9084ISSN:1463-907
