    Nanostructured complex oxides as a route towards thermal behavior in artificial spin ice systems

    We have used soft x-ray photoemission electron microscopy to image the magnetization of single domain La0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}MnO3_{3} nano-islands arranged in geometrically frustrated configurations such as square ice and kagome ice geometries. Upon thermal randomization, ensembles of nano-islands with strong inter-island magnetic coupling relax towards low-energy configurations. Statistical analysis shows that the likelihood of ensembles falling into low-energy configurations depends strongly on the annealing temperature. Annealing to just below the Curie temperature of the ferromagnetic film (TC_{C} = 338 K) allows for a much greater probability of achieving low energy configurations as compared to annealing above the Curie temperature. At this thermally active temperature of 325 K, the ensemble of ferromagnetic nano-islands explore their energy landscape over time and eventually transition to lower energy states as compared to the frozen-in configurations obtained upon cooling from above the Curie temperature. Thus, this materials system allows for a facile method to systematically study thermal evolution of artificial spin ice arrays of nano-islands at temperatures modestly above room temperature.Comment: 4 figures and 9 supplemental figure

    Thickness dependence of exchange coupling in (111)-oriented perovskite oxide superlattices

    Epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3(LSMO)/La0.7Sr0.3FeO3 (LSFO) superlattices on (111)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates with sublayer thicknesses ranging from 3 to 60 unit cells (u.c.) were synthesized and characterized. Detailed analysis of their structural, electronic, and magnetic properties were performed to explore the effect of sublayer thickness on the magnetic structure and exchange coupling at (111)-oriented perovskite oxide interfaces. In the ultrathin limit (3-6 u.c.), we find that the antiferromagnetic (AF) properties of the LSFO sublayers are preserved with an out-of-plane canting of the AF spin axis, while the ferromagnetic (FM) properties of the LSMO sublayers are significantly depressed. For thicker LSFO layers (>9 u.c.), the out-of-plane canting of the AF spin axis is only present in superlattices with thick LSMO sublayers. As a result, exchange coupling in the form of spin-flop coupling exists only in superlattices which display both robust ferromagnetism and out-of-plane canting of the AF spin axis

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    A checklist of trichopteran species in the middle and lower basins of the Jinsha River (southwestern China) is compiled for the first time. upon collected materials. It recorded ten families, 13 genera, and 23 species were recorded. Among them, the male of a new species Cheumatopsyche latisecta Ge & Sun, sp. nov., which can be diagnosed by its genitalia, is described and illustrated. In addition, nine other species are recorded for the first time from China, six species and three ones are recorded for the first time for Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, respectively. This trichopteran species list can provide guidance for caddisfly identification of the river and the region

    Blood Coagulation Testing Smartphone Platform Using Quartz Crystal Microbalance Dissipation Method

    Blood coagulation function monitoring is important for people who are receiving anticoagulation treatment and a portable device is needed by these patients for blood coagulation self-testing. In this paper, a novel smartphone based blood coagulation test platform was proposed. It was developed based on parylene-C coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) dissipation measuring and analysis. The parylene-C coating constructed a robust and adhesive surface for fibrin capturing. The dissipation factor was obtained by measuring the frequency response of the sensor. All measured data were sent to a smartphone via Bluetooth for dissipation calculation and blood coagulation results computation. Two major coagulation indexes, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and prothrombin time (PT) were measured on this platform compared with results by a commercial hemostasis system in a clinical laboratory. The measurement results showed that the adjusted R-square (R2) value for APTT and PT measurements were 0.985 and 0.961 respectively. The QCM dissipation method for blood coagulation measurement was reliable and effective and the platform together with the QCM dissipation method was a promising solution for point of care blood coagulation testing

    Bi-lineage inducible and immunoregulatory electrospun fibers scaffolds for synchronous regeneration of tendon-to-bone interface

    Facilitating regeneration of the tendon-to-bone interface can reduce the risk of postoperative retear after rotator cuff repair. Unfortunately, undesirable inflammatory responses following injury, difficulties in fibrocartilage regeneration, and bone loss in the surrounding area are major contributors to suboptimal tendon-bone healing. Thus, the development of biomaterials capable of regulating macrophage polarization to a favorable phenotype and promoting the synchronous regeneration of the tendon-to-bone interface is currently a top priority. Here, strontium-doped mesoporous bioglass nanoparticles (Sr-MBG) were synthesized through a modulated sol-gel method and Bi-lineage Inducible and Immunoregulatory Electrospun Fibers Scaffolds (BIIEFS) containing Sr-MBG were fabricated. The BIIEFS were biocompatible, showed sustained release of multiple types of bioactive ions, enhanced osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and facilitated macrophage polarization towards the M2 phenotype in vitro. The implantation of BIIEFS at the torn rotator cuff resulted in greater numbers of M2 macrophages and the synchronous regeneration of tendon, fibrocartilage, and bone at the tendon-to-bone interface, leading to a significant improvement in the biomechanical strength of the supraspinatus tendon-humerus complexes. Our research offers a feasible strategy to fabricate immunoregulatory and multi-lineage inducible electrospun fibers scaffolds incorporating bioglass nanoparticles for the regeneration of soft-to-hard tissue interfaces

    BackgroundShort stature in children is an important global health issue. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors associated with short stature and to construct a clinical prediction model and risk classification system for short stature.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 12,504 children aged 6–14 years of age from 13 primary and secondary schools in Pingshan District, Shenzhen. A physical examination was performed to measure the height and weight of the children. Questionnaires were used to obtain information about children and their parents, including sex, age, family environment, social environment, maternal conditions during pregnancy, birth and feeding, and lifestyle. The age confounding variable was adjusted through a 1 : 1 propensity score matching (PSM) analysis and 1,076 children were selected for risk factor analysis.ResultsThe prevalence of short stature in children aged 6–14 years was 4.3% in the Pingshan District, Shenzhen. The multivariate logistic regression model showed that the influencing factors for short stature were father's height, mother's height, annual family income, father's level of education and parents’ concern for their children's height in the future (P ConclusionThis study analyzed the risk factors for short stature in children and constructed a nomogram prediction model and a risk classification system based on these risk factors, as well as providing short stature screening and assessment individually.</p
