Performance of Various Length-to-Diameter Ratio of Thermal Energy Storage Tank: A Convergence Test

    Get PDF
Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is a technique that stores thermal energy, accomplished by changing the temperature of a storage medium, such as a phase change material (PCM), for later use in various applications, for example, heating and cooling or power generation. The heat energy that is saved is usually kept in the storage medium. This study investigates how the performance of the TES tank is affected by the ratio of length to diameter. The research focuses on how the ratio affects the convergence test while the PCM0 (water-ice) used in TES starts to release latent heat into the air. Five models were designed by using CATIA software and the analysis was conducted in ANSYS CFD software. Convergence tests were conducted to validate the accuracy of the obtained simulation results. Two additional criteria, namely temperature and ice mass fraction, were also analysed to evaluate the performance of the TES tanks. The investigation of the TES tank using five different models has shown that each model reaches a constant temperature of 0°C during the melting phase, but at different time intervals. Model 1 reaches this temperature the fastest, followed by Model 2, Model 3, Model 4, and finally Model 5. A model that reached the constant temperature first indicated a more efficient discharging process, as it signified a faster rate of ice melting and thermal energy release. In terms of ice mass fraction, Model 1 retained a significant amount of solid ice (0.9968), with noticeable melting. Model 5, on the other hand, showed minimal melting and better preservation of solid ice (0.9992). Considering temperature, ice mass fraction and ease of convergence, Model 1 performed the best, when the solidified PCM0 was melting faster while maintaining a substantial amount of solid ice in the TES tank. The present study was successfully developed and compared various TES configurations while satisfying the convergence criteria set in the simulation. To conclude with, the results showcase the performance differences based on pipe size. These discoveries contribute to refining tube-type TES tanks and their design for thermal energy storage systems

A series of 3-[2-chloroquinolin-3-yl)methylene]-5-aryl-furan-2(3H)-ones {3(a-p)} were synthesized. The required 3-(substitutedbenzoyl) propionic acids {2(a-d)} were prepared under Friedal Craft acylation reaction conditions. The substituted 2-chloroquinoline-3-carbaldehydes {1(a-d)} were synthesized by reaction of substitutedphenylethanone-oxime with phosphorus oxychloride in presence of dimethyl formamide using the Vilsmeir Haack reaction method. These compounds were screened for their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities along with their ulcerogenic and lipid peroxidation potentials. The compounds that showed significant anti-inflammatory activity were further screened for their analgesic activity. The compounds were less toxic in terms of ulcerogenicity as compared to a standard, which was also supported by lipid peroxidation studies. The antibacterial activities were performed against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Compounds 3f, 3n and 3o showed significant activity against both S. aureus and E. coli having an MIC value of 6.25ÎŒg mL-1

Subarachnoid hemorrhage following uneventful thyroid orbital decompression

A 24-year-old woman developed subarachnoid hemorrhage and left frontal lobe ischemia following uneventful right transconjunctival orbital decompression for thyroid-related immune orbitopathy. CT, MRI, CT angiography, and carotid angiography confirmed subarachnoid hemorrhage and brain ischemia on the left side without any cerebral vascular abnormalities on either side. All tests were unremarkable. She fully recovered at last follow-up, 4 months after surgery. We did not find any reason for the subarachnoid hemorrhage and left frontal lobe ischemia. This complication should be considered after orbital surgery for patients with thyroid-related immune orbitopathy. ©2007The American Society of Opthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Inc

A Miniature Double E-Shaped Meander Line Monopole Antenna for VHF Applications

    Get PDF
A miniature double E-shaped meander line monopole antenna with Defected Ground Structure (DGS) is proposed for Very High Frequency (VHF) Applications. The proposed antenna is a results of a few antenna evolutions. The combination of slots and meander line lead to a novel structure of the patch and resulting in reduction of antenna resonant frequency. The DGS is introduced on the partial ground plane to improve the reflection coefficient of the proposed design. Overall size of the antenna has been reduced up to 89% after implementing the proposed method. A broad parametric analysis have been conducted to optimize the performances of the antenna and to observe the effects of various dimensional parameters. Experiments have been accomplished to validate the proposed antenna performances where simulated and measured results are agree well with each other. The physical area of the proposed antenna is only 181 x 251 mm2 at 151 MHz resonant frequency. The proposed antenna produces an omnidirectional radiation pattern with 1.364 dBi measured gain

    Get PDF
We identified avian influenza virus A (H5N1) infection in a child in Bangladesh in 2008 by routine influenza surveillance. The virus was of the same clade and phylogenetic subgroup as that circulating among poultry during the period. This case illustrates the value of routine surveillance for detection of novel influenza virus

Background: Anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) antibodies (PD1) prolong recurrence-free survival in high-risk resected melanoma; however, approximately 25%-30% of patients recur within 1 year. This study describes the pattern of recurrence, management and outcomes of patients who recur with adjuvant PD1 therapy.Patients and methods: Consecutive patients from 16 centres who recurred having received adjuvant PD1 therapy for resected stage III/IV melanoma were studied. Recurrence characteristics, management and outcomes were examined; patients with mucosal melanoma were analysed separately. Results: Melanoma recurrence occurred in 147 (17%) of ∌850 patients treated with adjuvant PD1. In those with cutaneous melanoma (n = 136), median time to recurrence was 4.6 months (range 0.3-35.7); 104 (76%) recurred during (ON) adjuvant PD1 after a median 3.2 months and 32 (24%) following (OFF) treatment cessation after a median 12.5 months, including in 21 (15%) who ceased early for toxicity. Fifty-nine (43%) recurred with locoregional disease only and 77 (57%) with distant disease. Of those who recurred locally, 22/59 (37%) subsequently recurred distantly. Eighty-nine (65%) patients received systemic therapy after recurrence. Of those who recurred ON adjuvant PD1, none (0/6) responded to PD1 alone; 8/33 assessable patients (24%) responded to ipilimumab (alone or in combination with PD1) and 18/23 (78%) responded to BRAF/MEK inhibitors. Of those who recurred OFF adjuvant PD1, two out of five (40%) responded to PD1 monotherapy, two out of five (40%) responded to ipilimumab-based therapy and 9/10 (90%) responded to BRAF/MEK inhibitors. Conclusions: Most patients who recur early despite adjuvant PD1 develop distant metastases. In those who recur ON adjuvant PD1, there is minimal activity of further PD1 monotherapy, but ipilimumab (alone or in combination with PD1) and BRAF/MEK inhibitors have clinical utility. Retreatment with PD1 may have activity in select patients who recur OFF PD1.</p

Anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2018

    Get PDF
Anemia is a globally widespread condition in women and is associated with reduced economic productivity and increased mortality worldwide. Here we map annual 2000–2018 geospatial estimates of anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age (15–49 years) across 82 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), stratify anemia by severity and aggregate results to policy-relevant administrative and national levels. Additionally, we provide subnational disparity analyses to provide a comprehensive overview of anemia prevalence inequalities within these countries and predict progress toward the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target (WHO GNT) to reduce anemia by half by 2030. Our results demonstrate widespread moderate improvements in overall anemia prevalence but identify only three LMICs with a high probability of achieving the WHO GNT by 2030 at a national scale, and no LMIC is expected to achieve the target in all their subnational administrative units. Our maps show where large within-country disparities occur, as well as areas likely to fall short of the WHO GNT, offering precision public health tools so that adequate resource allocation and subsequent interventions can be targeted to the most vulnerable populations.Peer reviewe

Measurement of the cross section of high transverse momentum Z→bb̄ production in proton–proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
This Letter reports the observation of a high transverse momentum Z→bb̄ signal in proton–proton collisions at √s=8 TeV and the measurement of its production cross section. The data analysed were collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb−Âč. The Z→bb̄ decay is reconstructed from a pair of b -tagged jets, clustered with the anti-ktkt jet algorithm with R=0.4R=0.4, that have low angular separation and form a dijet with pT>200 GeVpT>200 GeV. The signal yield is extracted from a fit to the dijet invariant mass distribution, with the dominant, multi-jet background mass shape estimated by employing a fully data-driven technique that reduces the dependence of the analysis on simulation. The fiducial cross section is determined to be σZ→bbÂŻfid=2.02±0.20 (stat.) ±0.25 (syst.)±0.06 (lumi.) pb=2.02±0.33 pb, in good agreement with next-to-leading-order theoretical predictions

Measurement of the branching ratio Γ(Λb⁰ → ψ(2S)Λ0)/Γ(Λb⁰ → J/ψΛ0) with the ATLAS detector

An observation of the Λb0→ψ(2S)Λ0\Lambda_b^0 \rightarrow \psi(2S) \Lambda^0 decay and a comparison of its branching fraction with that of the Λb0→J/ψΛ0\Lambda_b^0 \rightarrow J/\psi \Lambda^0 decay has been made with the ATLAS detector in proton--proton collisions at s=8 \sqrt{s}=8\,TeV at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 20.6 20.6\,fb−1^{-1}. The J/ψJ/\psi and ψ(2S)\psi(2S) mesons are reconstructed in their decays to a muon pair, while the Λ0→pπ−\Lambda^0\rightarrow p\pi^- decay is exploited for the Λ0\Lambda^0 baryon reconstruction. The Λb0\Lambda_b^0 baryons are reconstructed with transverse momentum pT>10 p_{\rm T}>10\,GeV and pseudorapidity ∣η∣<2.1|\eta|<2.1. The measured branching ratio of the Λb0→ψ(2S)Λ0\Lambda_b^0 \rightarrow \psi(2S) \Lambda^0 and Λb0→J/ψΛ0\Lambda_b^0 \rightarrow J/\psi \Lambda^0 decays is Γ(Λb0→ψ(2S)Λ0)/Γ(Λb0→J/ψΛ0)=0.501±0.033(stat)±0.019(syst)\Gamma(\Lambda_b^0 \rightarrow \psi(2S)\Lambda^0)/\Gamma(\Lambda_b^0 \rightarrow J/\psi\Lambda^0) = 0.501\pm 0.033 ({\rm stat})\pm 0.019({\rm syst}), lower than the expectation from the covariant quark model.Comment: 12 pages plus author list (28 pages total), 5 figures, 1 table, published on Physics Letters B 751 (2015) 63-80. Measurement of the View the tt production cross-section using eÎŒ events with b-tagged jets in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
This paper describes a measurement of the inclusive top quark pair production cross-section (σttÂŻ) with a data sample of 3.2 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV, collected in 2015 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. This measurement uses events with an opposite-charge electron–muon pair in the final state. Jets containing b-quarks are tagged using an algorithm based on track impact parameters and reconstructed secondary vertices. The numbers of events with exactly one and exactly two b-tagged jets are counted and used to determine simultaneously σttÂŻ and the efficiency to reconstruct and b-tag a jet from a top quark decay, thereby minimising the associated systematic uncertainties. The cross-section is measured to be: σttÂŻ = 818 ± 8 (stat) ± 27 (syst) ± 19 (lumi) ± 12 (beam) pb, where the four uncertainties arise from data statistics, experimental and theoretical systematic effects, the integrated luminosity and the LHC beam energy, giving a total relative uncertainty of 4.4%. The result is consistent with theoretical QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order. A fiducial measurement corresponding to the experimental acceptance of the leptons is also presented
