PokerGPT: An End-to-End Lightweight Solver for Multi-Player Texas Hold'em via Large Language Model
Poker, also known as Texas Hold'em, has always been a typical research target
within imperfect information games (IIGs). IIGs have long served as a measure
of artificial intelligence (AI) development. Representative prior works, such
as DeepStack and Libratus heavily rely on counterfactual regret minimization
(CFR) to tackle heads-up no-limit Poker. However, it is challenging for
subsequent researchers to learn CFR from previous models and apply it to other
real-world applications due to the expensive computational cost of CFR
iterations. Additionally, CFR is difficult to apply to multi-player games due
to the exponential growth of the game tree size. In this work, we introduce
PokerGPT, an end-to-end solver for playing Texas Hold'em with arbitrary number
of players and gaining high win rates, established on a lightweight large
language model (LLM). PokerGPT only requires simple textual information of
Poker games for generating decision-making advice, thus guaranteeing the
convenient interaction between AI and humans. We mainly transform a set of
textual records acquired from real games into prompts, and use them to
fine-tune a lightweight pre-trained LLM using reinforcement learning human
feedback technique. To improve fine-tuning performance, we conduct prompt
engineering on raw data, including filtering useful information, selecting
behaviors of players with high win rates, and further processing them into
textual instruction using multiple prompt engineering techniques. Through the
experiments, we demonstrate that PokerGPT outperforms previous approaches in
terms of win rate, model size, training time, and response speed, indicating
the great potential of LLMs in solving IIGs
Inconceivable Hypokalemia: A Case Report of Acute Severe Barium Chloride Poisoning
Barium is a heavy divalent alkaline earth metal that has been known as a muscle poison. Barium can cause human toxicity, which may lead to significant hypokalemia and have serious consequences. This paper reports a case of unprecedented barium intoxication in which the patient, who suffered from depression, swallowed at least 3.0 g barium chloride to commit suicide. On admission, the patient presented with nausea, vomiting, stomach burning feeling, dizziness, and weakness. Emergency biochemical testing showed that the patient was suffering from severe hypokalemia (K+ 1.7 mmol/L). His electrocardiogram (ECG) prompted atrioventricular blocking, ventricular tachycardia, prolongation of PR interval, ST segment depression with U waves, and T wave inversion. Intravenous potassium supplements were given immediately to correct hypokalemia and regular monitoring of vital signs and fluid balance was arranged. After all-out rescue of our hospital personnel, the condition of the patient is currently stable and he is gradually recovering. This case exemplifies the weaknesses of the management of toxic substances and the lack of mental health education for young people. We hope to get more attention for the supervision of toxic substances and the healthy development of young people
Spatial-temporal analysis of hepatitis E in Hainan Province, China (2013-2022): insights from four major hospitals
ObjectiveExploring the Incidence, Epidemic Trends, and Spatial Distribution Characteristics of Sporadic Hepatitis E in Hainan Province from 2013 to 2022 through four major tertiary hospitals in the Province.MethodsWe collected data on confirmed cases of hepatitis E in Hainan residents admitted to the four major tertiary hospitals in Haikou City from January 2013 to December 2022. We used SPSS software to analyze the correlation between incidence rate and economy, population density and geographical location, and origin software to draw a scatter chart and SAS 9.4 software to conduct a descriptive analysis of the time trend. The distribution was analyzed using ArcMap 10.8 software (spatial autocorrelation analysis, hotspot identification, concentration, and dispersion trend analysis). SAS software was used to build an autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMA) to predict the monthly number of cases in 2023 and 2024.ResultsFrom 2013 to 2022, 1,922 patients with sporadic hepatitis E were treated in the four hospitals of Hainan Province. The highest proportion of patients (n = 555, 28.88%) were aged 50–59 years. The annual incidence of hepatitis E increased from 2013 to 2019, with a slight decrease in 2020 and 2021 and an increase in 2022. The highest number of cases was reported in Haikou, followed by Dongfang and Danzhou. We found that there was a correlation between the economy, population density, latitude, and the number of cases, with the correlation coefficient |r| value fluctuating between 0.403 and 0.421, indicating a linear correlation. At the same time, a scatter plot shows the correlation between population density and incidence from 2013 to 2022, with r2 values fluctuating between 0.5405 and 0.7116, indicating a linear correlation. Global Moran’s I, calculated through spatial autocorrelation analysis, showed that each year from 2013 to 2022 all had a Moran’s I value >0, indicating positive spatial autocorrelation (p < 0.01). Local Moran’s I analysis revealed that from 2013 to 2022, local hotspots were mainly concentrated in the northern part of Hainan Province, with Haikou, Wenchang, Ding’an, and Chengmai being frequent hotspot regions, whereas Baoting, Qiongzhong, and Ledong were frequent cold-spot regions. Concentration and dispersion analysis indicated a clear directional pattern in the average density distribution, moving from northeast to southwest. Time-series forecast modeling showed that the forecast number of newly reported cases per month remained relatively stable in 2023 and 2024, fluctuating between 17 and 19.ConclusionThe overall incidence of hepatitis E in Hainan Province remains relatively stable. The incidence of hepatitis E in Hainan Province increased from 2013 to 2019, with a higher clustering of cases in the northeast region and a gradual spread toward the southwest over time. A semi-quantitative upconversion nanoparticle-based immunochromatographic assay for SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection
The unprecedented public health and economic impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has been met with an equally unprecedented scientific response. Sensitive point-of-care methods to detect SARS-CoV-2 antigens in clinical specimens are urgently required for the rapid screening of individuals with viral infection. Here, we developed an upconversion nanoparticle-based lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (UCNP-LFIA) for the high-sensitivity detection of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein. A pair of rabbit SARS-CoV-2 N-specific monoclonal antibodies was conjugated to UCNPs, and the prepared UCNPs were then deposited into the LFIA test strips for detecting and capturing the N protein. Under the test conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) of UCNP-LFIA for the N protein was 3.59 pg/mL, with a linear range of 0.01–100 ng/mL. Compared with that of the current colloidal gold-based LFIA strips, the LOD of the UCNP-LFIA-based method was increased by 100-fold. The antigen recovery rate of the developed method in the simulated pharyngeal swab samples ranged from 91.1 to 117.3%. Furthermore, compared with the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, the developed UCNP-LFIA method showed a sensitivity of 94.73% for 19 patients with COVID-19. Thus, the newly established platform could serve as a promising and convenient fluorescent immunological sensing approach for the efficient screening and diagnosis of COVID-19
The applicability and efficacy of Micro-Video Psychological Training Camp in groups with mild to moderate symptoms of depression and anxiety: A prospective and randomized controlled trial protocol
BackgroundMental health is a global issue requiring global attention. Depression and anxiety are two of the most common mental disorders (CMDs) and are characterized by high incidence and high comorbidity. In recent years, the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic and exacerbated social instability have posed significant challenges to the mental resilience and mental health outcomes of the global population. Now more than ever, with an increase in mental health needs, it has become even more crucial to find an effective solution to provide universal mental healthcare. Psychotherapy is of vital importance for those coping with symptoms of depression and anxiety and is used to enhance mental resilience. However, such therapy can be difficult to access in reality. In this context, the Micro-Video Psychological Training Camp (MVPTC) platform will be developed.ObjectivesAs an online self-help platform for psychological intervention, the MVPTC platform was developed for those who suffer from mild to moderate symptoms of depression and/or anxiety and is tasked with the goal of reducing depressive and anxious symptoms while improving mental resilience. Thus, this study will be carried out to verify its efficacy and applicability.MethodsIn this parallel-group, randomized controlled trial, a total of 200 mild to moderately depressed and/or anxious adults seeking self-help will be randomly recruited and assigned to either the micro-video psychological intervention group or the wait list control group. Online measurements by self-assessment will be taken at baseline, post-intervention, 1-month, and 3-month follow-up.ResultsThe primary results will involve symptoms of depression and anxiety. The secondary results will involve mental resilience. An analysis will be conducted based on the intention-to-treat principle.DiscussionThis trial will examine whether the MVPTC platform for the relief of symptoms and the enhancement of resilience in a population screened for depression and anxiety symptoms proves effective and applicable. Large-scale resilience enhancement may benefit public mental health in terms of preventive interventions, managing depressive and anxiety symptoms, and promoting mental health. With the MVPTC-based method being applied, a brief, efficient, and structured intervention model can potentially be established, having the potential to provide necessary and accessible mental support for an extensive target group.Clinical trial registrationhttp://www.chictr.org.cn/, identifier ChiCTR2100043725
Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome
The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead
Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search
Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe
The Impact of Radiation Dose on Preoperative Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy Effects for Patients with Locally Advanced Squamous Cell Esophageal Carcinoma: A Propensity Score-Matched Retrospective Study
Objective. To explore the impact of radiation dose on preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy effects for patients with locally advanced squamous cell esophageal carcinoma (LASCEC) with long-term follow-up data. Methods. The patients with LASCEC received either low dose radiotherapy (50.4Gy/23f/1.8Gy) or a high dose (64.8Gy/25f/1.8Gy) followed by neoadjuvant chemotherapy preoperatively were included in this study. To balance potential bias, 1 : 1 propensity score matching (PSM) with a caliper of 0.1 was used. The two groups were compared in terms of radical resection, post-radiation adverse event rates, perioperative mortality, postoperative adverse event rates, overall survival (OS), local recurrence rate, and distant metastatic rate. Results. Forty-two patients were enrolled in this study, with 21 patients in each group after PSM. There was no difference in baseline characteristics between the two groups (all p >0.05). The rates of radical resection (71.4% vs 57.1%, P =0.334), perioperative mortality (9.5% vs 4.8%, P =0.549), and postoperative adverse event rates (76.2% vs 90.5%, P =0.410) did not differ significantly between the two groups. The 5-year OS rate was statistically higher in the group with a high dose (66.7% vs. 28.6%, P =0.013). Meanwhile, the local recurrence rate was statistically lower in the high dose group (14.3% vs 47.6%, P =0.019 for 3 years; 33.3% vs 66.6%, P =0.031 for 5 years). Moreover, the 3-year distant metastasis rate was statistically lower in the group with a high dose (9.5% vs 38.1%, P = 0.03). Conclusion. Patients with LASCEC may benefit from preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy with a high radiation dosage (64.8Gy/25f/1.8Gy)
Multiple Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Surface Water and Sediment in Taihu Lake, China
Taihu Lake is the third-largest freshwater lake in eastern China. The contamination of heavy metals (HMs) in Taihu Lake resulting from rapid economic development and population growth has raised significant concerns in recent years. In this study, the contents and spatial distributions of eight typical HMs (Hg, Cr(VI), As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the fresh surface water and sediments from Taihu Lake were investigated. The potential ecological and health risks posed by HMs were evaluated using multiple assessment methods. Risk quotients were used to assess the ecological risks of HMs, and chronic risk quotients of Cu, Ni, and Pb (>1.0) were found in the surface water of Taihu Lake. According to the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and pollution load index (PLI) values, the lake sediments exhibited moderate risks of Cd and Hg. In general, the sediments were moderately contaminated by HMs based on the average risk index (RI < 300). Spatially, a high ecological risk posed by the HMs existed in the sediments of northern Taihu Lake (RI > 300), while the sediments in the southwestern and eastern regions had moderate risk levels. The non-carcinogenic risk levels of Hg, Cd, Cu, and Zn were acceptable based on the exposure characteristics of residents living around Taihu Lake. The carcinogenic risk levels of Cr(VI), As, Pb, and Ni through drinking water were acceptable. However, the ingestion of Cr(VI), As, and Ni through drinking water and fish consumption may pose certain health risks. Therefore, the levels of toxic metals, in particular, Cr(VI), As, and Ni, in edible organisms should be monitored periodically and controlled to alleviate the potential carcinogenic risks through food ingestion. Our work provides valuable information concerning the ecological risk distribution of HMs in Taihu Lake, which is essential for protecting the safety of aquatic organisms and human health and minimizing HM pollution in the lake
