    Angular Gap: Reducing the Uncertainty of Image Difficulty through Model Calibration

    Curriculum learning needs example difficulty to proceed from easy to hard. However, the credibility of image difficulty is rarely investigated, which can seriously affect the effectiveness of curricula. In this work, we propose Angular Gap, a measure of difficulty based on the difference in angular distance between feature embeddings and class-weight embeddings built by hyperspherical learning. To ascertain difficulty estimation, we introduce class-wise model calibration, as a post-training technique, to the learnt hyperbolic space. This bridges the gap between probabilistic model calibration and angular distance estimation of hyperspherical learning. We show the superiority of our calibrated Angular Gap over recent difficulty metrics on CIFAR10-H and ImageNetV2. We further propose a curriculum based on Angular Gap for unsupervised domain adaptation that can translate from learning easy samples to mining hard samples. We combine this curriculum with a state-of-the-art self-training method, Cycle Self Training (CST). The proposed Curricular CST learns robust representations and outperforms recent baselines on Office31 and VisDA 2017

    Plasma-photocatalytic conversion of CO2 at low temperatures: Understanding the synergistic effect of plasma-catalysis

    A coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor has been developed for plasma-catalytic conversion of pure CO2 into CO and O2 at low temperatures (<150°C) and atmospheric pressure. The effect of specific energy density (SED) on the performance of the plasma process has been investigated. In the absence of a catalyst in the plasma, the maximum conversion of CO2 reaches 21.7% at a SED of 80kJ/L. The combination of plasma with BaTiO3 and TiO2 photocatalysts in the CO2 DBD slightly increases the gas temperature of the plasma by 6-11°C compared to the CO2 discharge in the absence of a catalyst at a SED of 28kJ/L. The synergistic effect from the combination of plasma with photocatalysts (BaTiO3 and TiO2) at low temperatures contributes to a significant enhancement of both CO2 conversion and energy efficiency by up to 250%. The UV intensity generated by the CO2 discharge is significantly lower than that emitted from UV lamps that are used to activate photocatalysts in conventional photocatalytic reactions, which suggests that the UV emissions generated by the CO2 DBD only play a very minor role in the activation of the BaTiO3 and TiO2 catalysts in the plasma-photocatalytic conversion of CO2. The synergy of plasma-catalysis for CO2 conversion can be mainly attributed to the physical effect induced by the presence of catalyst pellets in the discharge and the dominant photocatalytic surface reaction driven by the plasma

    Autoimmune and autoinflammatory mechanisms in uveitis

    The eye, as currently viewed, is neither immunologically ignorant nor sequestered from the systemic environment. The eye utilises distinct immunoregulatory mechanisms to preserve tissue and cellular function in the face of immune-mediated insult; clinically, inflammation following such an insult is termed uveitis. The intra-ocular inflammation in uveitis may be clinically obvious as a result of infection (e.g. toxoplasma, herpes), but in the main infection, if any, remains covert. We now recognise that healthy tissues including the retina have regulatory mechanisms imparted by control of myeloid cells through receptors (e.g. CD200R) and soluble inhibitory factors (e.g. alpha-MSH), regulation of the blood retinal barrier, and active immune surveillance. Once homoeostasis has been disrupted and inflammation ensues, the mechanisms to regulate inflammation, including T cell apoptosis, generation of Treg cells, and myeloid cell suppression in situ, are less successful. Why inflammation becomes persistent remains unknown, but extrapolating from animal models, possibilities include differential trafficking of T cells from the retina, residency of CD8(+) T cells, and alterations of myeloid cell phenotype and function. Translating lessons learned from animal models to humans has been helped by system biology approaches and informatics, which suggest that diseased animals and people share similar changes in T cell phenotypes and monocyte function to date. Together the data infer a possible cryptic infectious drive in uveitis that unlocks and drives persistent autoimmune responses, or promotes further innate immune responses. Thus there may be many mechanisms in common with those observed in autoinflammatory disorders

    Improving access to health care for chronic hepatitis B among migrant Chinese populations: a systematic mixed methods review of barriers and enablers.

    Migrant Chinese populations in Western countries have a high prevalence of chronic hepatitis B but often experience poor access to healthcare and late diagnosis. This systematic review aimed to identify obstacles and supports to timely and appropriate health service use among these populations. Systematic searches resulted in 48 relevant studies published between 1996 and 2015. Data extraction and synthesis were informed by models of healthcare access that highlight the interplay of patient, provider and health system factors. There was strong consistent evidence of low levels of knowledge among patients and community members; but interventions that were primarily focused on increasing knowledge had only modest positive effects on testing and/or vaccination. There was strong consistent evidence that Chinese migrants tend to misunderstand the need for healthcare for hepatitis B and have low satisfaction with services. Stigma was consistently associated with hepatitis B and there was weak but consistent evidence of stigma acting as a barrier to care. However, available evidence on the effects of providing culturally appropriate services for hepatitis B on increasing uptake is limited. There was strong consistent evidence that health professionals miss opportunities for testing and vaccination. Practitioner education interventions may be important but evidence of effectiveness is limited. A simple prompt in patient records for primary care physicians improved the uptake of testing; and a dedicated service increased targeted vaccination coverage for new-borns. Further development and more rigorous evaluation of more holistic approaches that address patient, provider and system obstacles are needed

    Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.     Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model.     Search for direct stau production in events with two hadronic tau-leptons in root s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of the supersymmetric partners ofτ-leptons (staus) in final stateswith two hadronically decayingτ-leptons is presented. The analysis uses a dataset of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of139fb−1, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LargeHadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant deviation from the expected StandardModel background is observed. Limits are derived in scenarios of direct production of stau pairs with eachstau decaying into the stable lightest neutralino and oneτ-lepton in simplified models where the two staumass eigenstates are degenerate. Stau masses from 120 GeV to 390 GeV are excluded at 95% confidencelevel for a massless lightest neutralino
