    Capitalismo social: un vistazo a resultados macroeconómicos de Ecuador, Perú y Colombia

    Adam Smith, affirmed that individual egoism is the one that leads to generate wealth and the economic growth of nations. With a rising capitalism as a result of the colonization of the Americas, the formation of an entrepreneurial class avid for money, which accumulates and reinvests surplus, gives way to the industrialization and wealth of the people. But this is not equitable, it is a product of what Karl Marx would call “exploitation of man by man”. This research aimed to investigate the evolution of the capitalist system, the role of the state and its level of intervention, to improve the living conditions of its population, comparing indicators of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. This study is a documentary work that considered macroeconomic data, along with the opinion of experts in the subject. The results showed that, in the last years, the countries with less state intervention had a better performance in their economy. It is concluded that current capitalism considers the social aspect, motivates to innovate, to undertake, to look for new sources of income; A protective state is not synonymous with well-being in the population, it needs private initiatives that generate employment with social commitment. Countries with less interventionism have managed to have better economic results with the consequent benefits for their population. Adam Smith afirmaba que el egoísmo individual es el que lleva a generar riqueza y al crecimiento económico de las naciones. Con un capitalismo naciente a raíz de la colonización de las Américas, la formación de una clase empresarial ávida de dinero, que acumula y reinvierte excedentes, da paso a la industrialización y riqueza de los pueblos. Pero ésta no es equitativa sino es producto de lo que Karl Marx llamaría “explotación del hombre por el hombre”. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo indagar sobre la evolución del sistema capitalista, el rol del Estado y su nivel de intervención para mejorar las condiciones de vida de su población, comparando indicadores de Colombia, Ecuador y Perú. El presente estudio es un trabajo documental que consideró datos macroeconómicos, junto con la opinión de expertos en el tema. Los resultados mostraron que contrariamente, en los últimos años, los países con menor intervención estatal tuvieron un mejor comportamiento en su economía. Se concluye que el capitalismo actual considera el aspecto social, motiva a innovar, a emprender, a buscar nuevas fuentes de ingreso, coligiéndose que un Estado protector no es sinónimo de bienestar en la población, pues necesita de iniciativas privadas con compromiso social que generen empleo. Países con menor intervencionismo han logrado tener mejores resultados económicos con los consecuentes beneficios para su población

    Evaluation of cellular safety and the chemical composition of the peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) ethanolic extracts

    Arachis hypogaea L. (Leguminosae) is distributed in tropical and subtropical areas. Peanut has high nutritional and commercial value. Scientific research showed that peanut has biological properties such as anticancer, antioxidant, antiinflammatory. However, it is necessary to know if consumption of peanut, either as food or as a phytopharmaceutical implies a health risk. The aim was to evaluate cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of ethanolic extracts from A. hypogaea. Also, chemical characterization of these extracts was performed. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by MTT and Neutral Red Uptake (NRU) assays on Vero cells. Genotoxicity was studied by Micronuclei and comet assays on Balb/C mice. Qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis of extracts were performed. Results showed that extracts have low cytotoxicity. Tegument ethanolic extract (TEE) and Seed ethanolic extract (SEE) were not genotoxic. The treatments with TEE at 250 mg/kg and SEE at 2000 mg/kg revealed (highest concentrations evaluated) some toxicity on blood marrow cells of mice. Chemical characterization indicated that TEE had 74.33 1.10 mg GAE/g of dried extract and SEE had 15.05 0.06 mg GAE/g of dried extract of total phenolic content. Also, proanthocyanidins (O.D. at 550 nm 1.39 0.15) and caffeic acid (2.46%) were identified in TEE. While, linoleic acid (58.84%) oleic acid (11.31%) and palmitic acid (8.37%) were major compounds of SEE. In conclusion, peanut consumption is safe at concentrations recommended for healthy uses, such as nutrition, and phytomedicine.Fil: Menis Candela, Florencia. Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto.     Online Training and Self-assessment in the Histopathologic Classification of Endocervical Adenocarcinoma and Diagnosis of Pattern of Invasion: Evaluation of Participant Performance

    Histopathologic classification of endocervical adenocarcinomas (EAC) has recently changed, with the new system based on human papillomavirus (HPV)-related morphologic features being incorporated into the 5th edition of the WHO Blue Book (Classification of Tumours of the Female Genital Tract). There has also been the introduction of a pattern-based classification system to assess invasion in HPV-associated (HPVA) endocervical adenocarcinomas that stratifies tumors into 3 groups with different prognoses. To facilitate the introduction of these changes into routine clinical practice, websites with training sets and test sets of scanned whole slide images were designed to improve diagnostic performance in histotype classification of endocervical adenocarcinoma based on the International Endocervical Adenocarcinoma Criteria and Classification (IECC) and assessment of Silva pattern of invasion in HPVA endocervical adenocarcinomas. We report on the diagnostic results of those who have participated thus far in these educational websites. Our goal was to identify areas where diagnostic performance was suboptimal and future educational efforts could be directed. There was very good ability to distinguish HPVA from HPV-independent adenocarcinomas within the WHO/IECC classification, with some challenges in the diagnosis of HPV-independent subtypes, especially mesonephric carcinoma. Diagnosis of HPVA subtypes was not consistent. For the Silva classification, the main challenge was related to distinction between pattern A and pattern B, with a tendency for participants to overdiagnose pattern B invasion. These observations can serve as the basis for more targeted efforts to improve diagnostic performance

    Extreme genomic erosion after recurrent demographic bottlenecks in the highly endangered Iberian lynx

    Background: Genomic studies of endangered species provide insights into their evolution and demographic history, reveal patterns of genomic erosion that might limit their viability, and offer tools for their effective conservation. The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is the most endangered felid and a unique example of a species on the brink of extinction. Results: We generate the first annotated draft of the Iberian lynx genome and carry out genome-based analyses of lynx demography, evolution, and population genetics. We identify a series of severe population bottlenecks in the history of the Iberian lynx that predate its known demographic decline during the 20th century and have greatly impacted its genome evolution. We observe drastically reduced rates of weak-to-strong substitutions associated with GC-biased gene conversion and increased rates of fixation of transposable elements. We also find multiple signatures of genetic erosion in the two remnant Iberian lynx populations, including a high frequency of potentially deleterious variants and substitutions, as well as the lowest genome-wide genetic diversity reported so far in any species. Conclusions: The genomic features observed in the Iberian lynx genome may hamper short- and long-term viability through reduced fitness and adaptive potential. The knowledge and resources developed in this study will boost the research on felid evolution and conservation genomics and will benefit the ongoing conservation and management of this emblematic species

    Crop Ontology Governance and Stewardship Framework

    A governance & stewardship framework for the Crop Ontology Project is required as this is a collaborative tool developed by a Community of Practice. Over the last 12 years of its existence, it has increased significantly in scope and use. Collecting and storing plant trait data and annotating the data with ontology terms is widely accepted by the crop science community to be critical to enable data interoperability and interexchange through tools such as the Breeding API (BrAPI). The Crop Ontology Community of Practice is organised around roles, curation principles and validation processes that require a formal description. A governance framework is defined by the various actors involved in the asset’s design, development and maintenance. It is complemented by a quality assurance process to ensure that trust levels, value creation, and sustainability objectives meet appropriate quality levels. The general principles underlying data governance are integrity, transparency, accountability and ownership, stewardship, standardization, change management and a robust data audit

    Global maps of soil temperature

    Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km² resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e., offset) between in-situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km² pixels (summarized from 8500 unique temperature sensors) across all the world’s major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in-situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications

    Mortality and pulmonary complications in patients undergoing surgery with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection: an international cohort study

    Background: The impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on postoperative recovery needs to be understood to inform clinical decision making during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study reports 30-day mortality and pulmonary complication rates in patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: This international, multicentre, cohort study at 235 hospitals in 24 countries included all patients undergoing surgery who had SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed within 7 days before or 30 days after surgery. The primary outcome measure was 30-day postoperative mortality and was assessed in all enrolled patients. The main secondary outcome measure was pulmonary complications, defined as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or unexpected postoperative ventilation. Findings: This analysis includes 1128 patients who had surgery between Jan 1 and March 31, 2020, of whom 835 (74·0%) had emergency surgery and 280 (24·8%) had elective surgery. SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed preoperatively in 294 (26·1%) patients. 30-day mortality was 23·8% (268 of 1128). Pulmonary complications occurred in 577 (51·2%) of 1128 patients; 30-day mortality in these patients was 38·0% (219 of 577), accounting for 81·7% (219 of 268) of all deaths. In adjusted analyses, 30-day mortality was associated with male sex (odds ratio 1·75 [95% CI 1·28–2·40], p\textless0·0001), age 70 years or older versus younger than 70 years (2·30 [1·65–3·22], p\textless0·0001), American Society of Anesthesiologists grades 3–5 versus grades 1–2 (2·35 [1·57–3·53], p\textless0·0001), malignant versus benign or obstetric diagnosis (1·55 [1·01–2·39], p=0·046), emergency versus elective surgery (1·67 [1·06–2·63], p=0·026), and major versus minor surgery (1·52 [1·01–2·31], p=0·047). Interpretation: Postoperative pulmonary complications occur in half of patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection and are associated with high mortality. Thresholds for surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic should be higher than during normal practice, particularly in men aged 70 years and older. Consideration should be given for postponing non-urgent procedures and promoting non-operative treatment to delay or avoid the need for surgery.     América Latina y los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible: análisis de su viabilidad

    The United Nations General Assembly approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, corresponding to 193 countries reaching them, including those that make up Latin America. There are 17 objectives, within which to end poverty and achieve inclusive economic growth, are the basis of this research. The objective of this work is to review the progress of this region in the period 2012-2017, as a diagnosis that allows establishing the possibility of meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. This is a quantitative investigation whose methodology was based on the study of thirteen countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, and required the review of sources documentaries as statistics of official entities. The results show that important progress has been made in Latin America, however it is concluded that it becomes difficult to achieve the objectives of sustainable development, given that the level of growth has decreased and economic and social problems have worsened in some countries that harm the achievement of goals.La Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas aprobó la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible, correspondiendo a 193 países alcanzarlos, entre ellos los que conforman América Latina. Son 17 objetivos, dentro de los cuales finalizar con la pobreza y alcanzar un crecimiento económico inclusivo, son la base de la presente investigación. El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una revisión de los avances de esta región en el período 2012-2017, como diagnóstico que permita establecer la posibilidad de cumplir con los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible. Se trata de una investigación cuantitativa cuya metodología se basó en el estudio de trece países: Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, México, Panamá, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay y Venezuela, y requirió la revisión de fuentes documentales como estadísticas de entidades oficiales. Los resultados muestran que se han hecho avances importantes en América Latina, sin embargo se concluye que se vuelve difícil alcanzar los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible, dado que el nivel de crecimiento ha disminuido y se han agudizado problemas de índole económica y social en algunos países que perjudican la consecución de las metas
