    Linking plant phenology to conservation biology

    Phenology has achieved a prominent position in current scenarios of global change research given its role inmonitoring and predicting the timing of recurrent life cycle events. However, the implications of phenology to environmental conservation and management remain poorly explored. Here,we present the first explicit appraisal of howphenology-amultidisciplinary science encompassing biometeorology, ecology, and evolutionary biology- can make a key contribution to contemporary conservation biology. We focus on shifts in plant phenology induced by global change, their impacts on species diversity and plant-animal interactions in the tropics, and how conservation efforts could be enhanced in relation to plant resource organization. We identify the effects of phenological changes and mismatches in the maintenance and conservation of mutualistic interactions, and examine how phenological research can contribute to evaluate, manage and mitigate the consequences of land-use change and other natural and anthropogenic disturbances, such as fire, exotic and invasive species. Wealso identify cutting-edge tools that can improve the spatial and temporal coverage of phenological monitoring, from satellites to drones and digital cameras. We highlight the role of historical information in recovering long-term phenological time series, and track climate-related shifts in tropical systems. Finally, we propose a set of measures to boost the contribution of phenology to conservation science.Weadvocate the inclusion of phenology into predictive models integrating evolutionary history to identify species groups that are either resilient or sensitive to future climate-change scenarios, and understand how phenological m ismatches can affect community dynamics, ecosystem services, and conservation over time

    Influence of bioceramic intracanal medication on the bond strength of bioceramic root canal sealer

    Abstract To investigate the influence of the remaining volume of a new intracanal medication based on bioceramic compounds on the bond strength (BS) and formation of an adhesive interface between calcium silicate-based and epoxy resin-based root canal sealers. For this purpose, the specimens were distributed according to the intracanal medication (n = 26): Bio-C Temp (BCT) and Ultracal XS (UXS). The roots were scanned in microCT, and after 7 days, the medication was removed. Then a new scan was performed to evaluate the volume of medication remaining. Subsequently, 40 specimens were redistributed into 2 subgroups (n = 10) and filled according to the sealer used: AH Plus (AHP) and Bio-C Sealer (BCS), to assess the bond strength by using the push-out test, and the adhesive interface by confocal laser fluorescence microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The t test showed a smaller remainder of BCT (1.77 ± 0.86) compared with UXS (10.47 ± 5.78), irrespective of the root third evaluated. The BS showed that teeth with BCT + BCS had higher bond strength values (3.70 ± 1.22) when compared to the other groups: BCT + AHP (2.15 ± 1.07), UXS + BCS (3.18 ± 1.09) and UXS + AHP (2.11 ± 1.02) (p<0.001). The cervical third had higher BS when compared with the middle and apical thirds (p < 0.001), and higher number of adhesive failures. The adhesive interface in SEM and CLSM images showed better adaptation for the association between BCT + BCS. Intracanal medication and silicate-based endodontic sealer appeared to interact chemically by forming a biomineralizing layer, allowing for an increase in the bond strength and forming an adhesive interface between the materials, with no or less gap formation

    Impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular testing in the United States versus the rest of the world

    Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States. Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis. Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection

    Tears evoke the intention to offer social support: A systematic investigation of the interpersonal effects of emotional crying across 41 countries

    Tearful crying is a ubiquitous and likely uniquely human phenomenon. Scholars have argued that emotional tears serve an attachment function: Tears are thought to act as a social glue by evoking social support intentions. Initial experimental studies supported this proposition across several methodologies, but these were conducted almost exclusively on participants from North America and Europe, resulting in limited generalizability. This project examined the tears-social support intentions effect and possible mediating and moderating variables in a fully pre-registered study across 7007 participants (24,886 ratings) and 41 countries spanning all populated continents. Participants were presented with four pictures out of 100 possible targets with or without digitally-added tears. We confirmed the main prediction that seeing a tearful individual elicits the intention to support, d = 0.49 [0.43, 0.55]. Our data suggest that this effect could be mediated by perceiving the crying target as warmer and more helpless, feeling more connected, as well as feeling more empathic concern for the crier, but not by an increase in personal distress of the observer. The effect was moderated by the situational valence, identifying the target as part of one's group, and trait empathic concern. A neutral situation, high trait empathic concern, and low identification increased the effect. We observed high heterogeneity across countries that was, via split-half validation, best explained by country-level GDP per capita and subjective well-being with stronger effects for higher-scoring countries. These findings suggest that tears can function as social glue, providing one possible explanation why emotional crying persists into adulthood.</p

    A multi-country test of brief reappraisal interventions on emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world

    Dental fluorosis is a developmental defect of enamel caused by chronicand excessive fluoride intake resulting in a hypomineralized enamel withincreased porosity. It is clinically identified as spots ranging from mild whitelines to opaque spots covering all or part of the enamel surface andbreakdown after teeth eruption. However, the clinical definition of the fluorosisdegree in teeth is not an easy task, having been presented many indicesthat generally qualify the severity degree with variations in the details.As the choice of treatment is closely linked to the defect severity, the purposeof this article is to present the clinical aspects of dental fluorosis representedthrough the Thylstrup-Fejerskov Index. The severity scores arepresented according to histological features and the differences betweenthem will be discussed in order to enable the dentist to correctly diagnoseand choose the most appropriate treatment for the patient with DF.La fluorosis dental (FD) es un defecto del desarrollo del esmalte dental causado por la ingesta crónica y excesiva de fluoruro, que resulta en un esmalte hipomineralizado y poroso. Clínicamente se manifiesta desde manchas y delicadas líneas blancas hasta manchas opacas que cubren parte o toda la superficie del esmalte, el cual es susceptible a pigmentaciones o fracturas post-eruptivas. Sin embargo, establecer el grado de compromiso de los dientes no es una tarea fácil y para esto se han presentado índices que determinan el grado de severidad con mayor o menor detalle. Como la decisión de tratamiento está estrechamente relacionada a la gravedad del defecto, el objetivo de este artículo es presentar los aspectos clínicos de la fluorosis dental de acuerdo al Índice de Thylstrup-Fejerskov (1978). Los grados de severidad son representados de acuerdo con las características histológicas y las diferencias entre ellos son discutidas para que el odontólogo pueda diagnosticas correctamente y escoger el tratamiento más adecuado para el paciente con FD.Aspectos clínicos da fluorose dentária de acordo com as características histológicas: revisão do Índice Thylstrup FejerskovA fluorose dental (FD) é um defeito de desenvolvimento do esmalte causado pela ingestão crônica e excessiva de flúor, resultando em um esmalte hipomineralizado com maior porosidade. Clinicamente é identificada como manchas que vão desde delicadas linhas brancas  até  manchas opacas que cobrem parte ou toda a superfície do esmalte podendo sofrer pigmentações ou fraturas após a irrupção. No entanto, a definição clínica do grau de comprometimento dos dentes não é uma tarefa fácil e tem sido apresentada na forma de índices que geralmente qualificam o grau de severidade com maior ou menor detalhes. Como a escolha do tratamento está intimamente ligada à gravidade do defeito, o objetivo deste artigo é apresentar os aspectos clínicos da fluorose dental representadas por meios do Índice de Thylstrup-Fejerskov (1978). Os escores de severidade são apresentadas de acordo com as características histológicas e as diferenças entre eles serão discutidas a fim de permitir ao dentista diagnosticar corretamente e escolher o tratamento mais adequado para o paciente com FD.Palavras-chave: fluorose dentária; diagnóstico; classificação
