    The skew network difference equation for the differential equation of the deflation surface of the orthotropic parallelogram plate Bₓ ∂⁴w/∂x⁴ + 2H ∂⁴w/∂x²∂y² + By ∂⁴w/∂y⁴=p were proposed for the special case H/(Bₓ·By)¹/²=1 and for the special boundary condition that the plate is supported simply at the opposite two skew sides and supported by flexible edge girders at the other two sides. These difference equations were applied to the theoretical analysis of the experimental study on the model skew composite grillage girder bridge, and it was found that this numerical analysis was very effective. To calculate the influence coefficients of the deflection and bending moment of the girders, the electronic digital automatic computer UNIVAC-120 was used

    River Bed Form in a Granitic Mountainous Catchment : A Case of the Source Area in Kurose River, Hiroshima Prefecture

    In order to clarify spatial variations in a river bed form in a granitic mountainous catchment, we surveyed topographically a steep river on a source area of Kurose River in which the debris flow occurred in 1999. Firstly, we found that the spatial variation in erosion-deposition process on the steep river. Both of the lower stream and upper one held much sediments with large gravels (φ>2m). On the other hand, the middle stream exposed mainly the bedrock. Secondary, we confirmed spatial distribution of river falls. The height of river fall on the upper stream rose with the increase of river gradient. On the contray, the frequency of falls was constant in spite of inclination

    Effect of forestation of hinoki and larch on soil chemistry in mountainous water source area for water supply to Tokyo

    Effects of forestry on soil properties, stream water chemistry and mass balance in watersheds had been confieremed by many previous studies. However, they have not clarified in detail variation processes of soil chemistry and soil physics after the hinoki and larch forestation. To clarify the variation processes, it is important to confirm the difference of soil chemistry and soil physics on the artifitial and natural forest. In this research, we conducted the soil physical and chemical investigations on seven slopes covered by hinoki (chamecyparis obtusa) and larch (Larix leptolepis) artificial and beech (Fagus crenata) natural forest in a highland area, the western side of Tokyo. The water repellency of A_0 horizon was stronger on the artificial forest slope than on the natural forest. In addition, the permeability was low on the artificial forest due to the strong water repellency. On the artificial forest, both of the exchangeable base cation content and soil pH were low and Al concentration was high, as compared with those on the natural forest. These results suggest that the soil acidification is progressed on the artificial forest. The decline of soil pH by the forestation was controlled by the increase of H^+ supply at the A_0 horizon due to the property of litter decomposition and the decrease of base cation supply at the A-horizon. In general, the cation supply rate such as weathering rate is controlled by the infiltration rate and temperature. These soil physical and chemical properties suggest that infitration rate at the A-horizon. declines after the forestation, weathering rate declines and consequently soil is acidified

    Breeding for increased nitrogen-use efficiency: a review for wheat (T. aestivum L.)

    Nitrogen fertilizer is the most used nutrient source in modern agriculture and represents significant environmental and production costs. In the meantime, the demand for grain increases and production per area has to increase as new cultivated areas are scarce. In this context, breeding for an efficient use of nitrogen became a major objective. In wheat, nitrogen is required to maintain a photosynthetically active canopy ensuring grain yield and to produce grain storage proteins that are generally needed to maintain a high end-use quality. This review presents current knowledge of physiological, metabolic and genetic factors influencing nitrogen uptake and utilization in the context of different nitrogen management systems. This includes the role of root system and its interactions with microorganisms, nitrate assimilation and its relationship with photosynthesis as postanthesis remobilization and nitrogen partitioning. Regarding nitrogen-use efficiency complexity, several physiological avenues for increasing it were discussed and their phenotyping methods were reviewed. Phenotypic and molecular breeding strategies were also reviewed and discussed regarding nitrogen regimes and genetic diversity

    Es werden die Genista radiata-Bestände an der Mendel in Südtirol (Italien) beschrieben und ihr Gesellschaftsanschluß diskutiert. Das Genisto-Festucetum alpestris Peer 83 besidelt steile südexponierte Kalkhänge der hochmontanen und subalpinen Stufe und ersetzt z.T. den Zwergstrauchgürtel mit Pinus mugo. Ähnlich zusammengesetzt ist das Genisto-Festucetum alpestris pinetosum Peer 83, das in den ¡lockeren Erika-Kiefernwäldern auftritt und bis in die tiefmontane Stufe hinunterreicht. Keinerlei syntaxonomische Bedeutung besitzt Genista radiata in den thermophilen Buschwaldgesellschaften, in denen die Pflanze lediglich eine Variante zum Orno-Ostryetum seslerietosum Peer 81 darstellt und speziell in der Saumzone anzutreffen ist. Auch in den Lärchenwiesen der Kammlagen kommt Genista radiata nur sporadisch vor. Sie ist hier mit dem Festucetum nigrescentis laricetosum subass. prov. verzahnt.Istražene su vegetacijske sastojine vrste Genista radiata u južnom Tirolu i razmatrana njihova fitocenološka pripadnost. Asocijacija Genisto-Festucetum alpestris Peer 83 nastava strme, južne vapnenačke obronke visokobrdskog i subalpskog pojasa. Subasocijacija Genisto-Festucetum alpestris pinetosum Peer 83 dolazi u rijetkim borovim šumama s crnjušom i spušta se do u niži brdski pojas. Termofilne niske šume, u kojima Genista radiata nema posebno sintaksonomsko značenje, označene su samo kao varijanta zajednice Orno-Ostryetum seslerietosum Peer 81. Genista radiata dolazi također na travnjacima s arišem, ali samo sporadično i to u mješavini sa zajednicom Festucetum nigrescentis laricetosnm subass. prov.The Genista radiata-communities of the Mendel in the South Tyrol (Italy) are described and their connection to other plant-communities is discussed. Genisto-Festucetum alpestris Peer 83 settles on steep, south- exposed colcareous slopes of high-mountain and subalpine altitudes and replaces particularly the dwarf-shrub-belt with Firms mugo. Similar contents aire found in Genisto-F estucetum alpestris pinetasum Peer 83, which occurs in undensed Erico-Pinetum-communities and reaches down to the low-mountain-altitude. In the thermophilic bush-communities, in which Genista radiata is found only as a variant of Orneto-Ostryetum seslerie- tosum (Peer 81), the plant has no syntaxonomic importance. Genista radiata especially is found in the edge-zone. In the grassland of the larch- communities of the ridges Genista radiata appears only sporadically. Here the plant appeals in Festucetum nigrescentis laricetosum subass. prov
