Data-driven sentence simplification: Survey and benchmark
Sentence Simplification (SS) aims to modify a sentence in order to make it easier to read and understand. In order to do so, several rewriting transformations can be performed such as replacement, reordering, and splitting. Executing these transformations while keeping sentences grammatical, preserving their main idea, and generating simpler output, is a challenging and still far from solved problem. In this article, we survey research on SS, focusing on approaches that attempt to learn how to simplify using corpora of aligned original-simplified sentence pairs in English, which is the dominant paradigm nowadays. We also include a benchmark of different approaches on common datasets so as to compare them and highlight their strengths and limitations. We expect that this survey will serve as a starting point for researchers interested in the task and help spark new ideas for future developments
Notch Lineages and Activity in Intestinal Stem Cells Determined by a New Set of Knock-In Mice
The conserved role of Notch signaling in controlling intestinal cell fate specification and homeostasis has been extensively studied. Nevertheless, the precise identity of the cells in which Notch signaling is active and the role of different Notch receptor paralogues in the intestine remain ambiguous, due to the lack of reliable tools to investigate Notch expression and function in vivo. We generated a new series of transgenic mice that allowed us, by lineage analysis, to formally prove that Notch1 and Notch2 are specifically expressed in crypt stem cells. In addition, a novel Notch reporter mouse, Hes1-EmGFPSAT, demonstrated exclusive Notch activity in crypt stem cells and absorptive progenitors. This roster of knock-in and reporter mice represents a valuable resource to functionally explore the Notch pathway in vivo in virtually all tissues
Cardiovascular diseases and air pollution in Novi Sad, Serbia
Objectives: A large body of evidence has documented that air pollutants have adverse effect on human health as well as on the environment. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was an association between outdoor concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and a daily number of hospital admissions due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in Novi Sad, Serbia among patients aged above 18. Material and Methods: The investigation was carried out during over a 3-year period (from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2009) in the area of Novi Sad. The number (N = 10 469) of daily CVD (ICD-10: I00-I99) hospital admissions was collected according to patients' addresses. Daily mean levels of NO2 and SO2, measured in the ambient air of Novi Sad via a network of fixed samplers, have been used to put forward outdoor air pollution. Associations between air pollutants and hospital admissions were firstly analyzed by the use of the linear regression in a single polluted model, and then trough a single and multi-polluted adjusted generalized linear Poisson model. Results: The single polluted model (without confounding factors) indicated that there was a linear increase in the number of hospital admissions due to CVD in relation to the linear increase in concentrations of SO2 (p = 0.015; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.144-1.329, R2 = 0.005) and NO2 (p = 0.007; 95% CI: 0.214-1.361, R2 = 0.007). However, the single and multi-polluted adjusted models revealed that only NO2 was associated with the CVD (p = 0.016, relative risk (RR) = 1.049, 95% CI: 1.009-1.091 and p = 0.022, RR = 1.047, 95% CI: 1.007-1.089, respectively). Conclusions: This study shows a significant positive association between hospital admissions due to CVD and outdoor NO2 concentrations in the area of Novi Sad, Serbia
The genetic architecture of the human cerebral cortex
The cerebral cortex underlies our complex cognitive capabilities, yet little is known about the specific genetic loci that influence human cortical structure. To identify genetic variants that affect cortical structure, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of brain magnetic resonance imaging data from 51,665 individuals. We analyzed the surface area and average thickness of the whole cortex and 34 regions with known functional specializations. We identified 199 significant loci and found significant enrichment for loci influencing total surface area within regulatory elements that are active during prenatal cortical development, supporting the radial unit hypothesis. Loci that affect regional surface area cluster near genes in Wnt signaling pathways, which influence progenitor expansion and areal identity. Variation in cortical structure is genetically correlated with cognitive function, Parkinson's disease, insomnia, depression, neuroticism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
A multi-country test of brief reappraisal interventions on emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world
Trabajar con hijos de familias afectadas por toxicodependencias: la intervención grupal comunitaria TRAMPOLINE
Introducción: Hijos de familias drogodependientes pone de manifiesto que existe un elevado riesgo de que los niños desarrollen sus propios trastornos relacionados con las drogas u otros problemas mentales. Sufren a menudo violencia, malos tratos y abandono en sus familias. Por ello constituyen un objetivo importante de los programas de prevención. En Alemania se calcula que aproximadamente 2,65 millones de niños y jóvenes se ven afectados por el consumo o dependencia de las drogas de sus padres. Tan sólo un 10% de ellos reciben tratamiento a la vez que sus padres. Hasta la fecha, no existe en Alemania ningún programa evaluado para hijos de familias afectadas por las drogas. Métodos: se desarrolló una nueva intervención grupal para hijos de familias con problemas de drogas y actualmente se está evaluando en un estudio aleatorio-controlado en múltiples centros financiado por el Ministerio de Sanidad alemán. El proceso de desarrollo se orientó simultáneamente en la teoría, los datos de investigación existentes y los informes de expertos. Uno de los objetivos clave del programa es fomentar la resiliancia en los hijos de padres drogodependientes. Resultados: el manual TRAMPOLINE expone un programa grupal modular de 9 sesiones, centrado en la adicción, para niños de 8 a 12 años con al menos un progenitor que consume drogas. Las sesiones semanales duran 90 minutos y combinan elementos psicopedagógicos con ejercicios y juegos de rol. Asimismo se integra en el programa un componente de intervención con los padres de dos sesiones. Se exponen el contenido, la estructura y los fundamentos teóricos de la intervención. Discusión: TRAMPOLINE es un nuevo planteamiento de intervención que se dirige a los hijos de familias drogodependientes. Se basa en la teoría y la práctica. Los resultados del estudio ofrecerán información crucial sobre la eficacia de un programa preventivo grupal estructurado para hijos alemanes de familias drogodependientes. De este modo, el estudio contribuirá a crear un sistema de ayuda preventiva más amplio y eficaz para este grupo de alto riesgo

Importance of individualizing treatment decisions in girls with central precocious puberty when initiating treatment after age 7 years or continuing beyond a chronological age of 10 years or a bone age of 12 years
ObjectivesGonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist treatment is important for optimal growth in girls with central precocious puberty (CPP). Data are lacking regarding benefit to height outcome when treatment is started after chronological age (CA) of 7 years, and if continued beyond CA of 10 years or bone age (BA) of 12 years.MethodsForty-eight girls with CPP were treated with monthly leuprolide depot. Change in predicted adult height (PAH) during treatment was assessed. Changes in PAH and growth velocity were compared between girls initiating treatment at CA <7 vs. ≥7 years, and BA ≥12 vs. BA <12 years.ResultsMean baseline CA was 6.8 years, BA, 10.2 years; and PAH, 156.4 cm. BA/CA ratio decreased from pretreatment values, averaging 1.5 to 1.2 at the end of treatment. Proportion of girls with >5 cm PAH change during treatment was similar, and PAH increased throughout treatment in most girls, regardless of age at treatment initiation. PAH continued to increase in 16/19 girls who continued treatment after BA of 12 years, and also in 16/22 girls who continued treatment after CA of 10 years.ConclusionsPAH improved in most girls who initiated treatment after CA of 7 years. It continued to improve in most girls with longer treatment, even past BA of 12 years or CA of 10 years, which suggests that no absolute CA or BA limit should define initiation or end of treatment. Treatment plans need to be individualized, and neither treatment initiation nor cessation should be based on BA or CA alone

Using change in predicted adult height during GnRH agonist treatment for individualized treatment decisions in girls with central precocious puberty
ObjectivesIt is important to understand what variables influence change in predicted adult height (PAH) throughout GnRHa treatment for central precocious puberty (CPP) to individualize treatment decisions and optimize care.MethodsChanges in PAH, chronological age (CA), bone age (BA), BA/CA, and height velocity (HV) were evaluated in girls with CPP throughout treatment with leuprolide acetate (n=77). A second analysis focused on changes in the 3 years preceding the first observed BA of ≥12 years. Relationships were characterized using plot inspection and linear mixed-effects analyses. Association between treatment duration and last assessed PAH was examined using multiple linear regression models.ResultsBA/CA and HV showed a nonlinear change during treatment, with the largest changes and improvement in PAH observed in the first 6-18 months. Rate of BA advancement tended to decrease more slowly in girls initiating treatment at a younger BA. On-treatment change in PAH was predicted by concurrent BA/CA change, HV, and BA, as well as CA at treatment initiation. Last assessed PAH was positively associated with longer treatment durations (primary/exploratory models cut-offs of ≥33/≥55 months).ConclusionsThese findings support individualized monitoring during GnRHa treatment. Initial response should be interpreted with caution until 6-18 months after treatment initiation and failure should not be assumed based on continued bone maturation in girls starting therapy at a younger age. Treatment cessation should not be automatically based on a diminishing change in PAH or HV, as ongoing treatment may result in continued increase or maintenance of PAH
