    On complexity and motion planning for co-rank one sub-Riemannian metrics

    In this paper, we study the motion planning problem for generic sub-Riemannian metrics of co-rank one. We give explicit expressions for the metric complexity (in the sense of F. Jean), in terms of the elementary invariants of the problem. We construct asymptotic optimal syntheses, it turns out that among the results we show, the most complicated case is the 3-dimensional. Besides the generic C[infinite] case, we study some non-generic generalizations in the analytic case

    Case Report: A Rare Truncating Variant of the CFHR5 Gene in IgA Nephropathy.

    IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerulonephritis worldwide. Despite appropriate therapy, 20-40% of affected-patients evolve toward end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Mesangial IgA deposits are the hallmark of IgAN, and complement deposition (C3) seems to differentiate latent IgA mesangial deposits from active IgAN. Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), another disease in which complement plays an important role, is caused by inherited or acquired deregulation of the alternative pathway (AP) of complement. A subgroup of IgAN shows thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) lesions in kidney biopsies, the histological characteristic of aHUS. Genetic variants of complement Factor H (CFH), known to be present in aHUS, have been associated with rapidly progressive forms of IgAN and a clinical pattern of aHUS. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have confirmed that the 1q32 region, encoding for CFH and its related proteins, is an IgAN susceptibility locus. A 30 year-old man was admitted for seizures and malignant hypertension. The kidney biopsy showed IgAN associated with features of TMA. Despite five plasma exchanges, the patient remained dialysis-dependent, and ESKD was diagnosed. Functional and genetic complement analysis were performed. A monoallelic protein-truncating, likely loss-of-function variant was identified in the CFHR5 gene. Eculizumab is the treatment of aHUS. As it has been successfully used in a few cases of rapidly progressive IgAN, it was decided to administer eculizumab over a period of 12 months in addition to the usual immunosuppression for renal transplantation. After a follow-up of 3 years, there was no clinical disease recurrence. Systematic biologic and genetic screening of complement in individuals with IgAN might be useful to better delineate the role of the AP of complement in renal disease progression, and this may have therapeutic implications

    Genomic analysis of the biocontrol strain Pseudomonas fluorescens Pf29Arp with evidence of T3SS and T6SS gene expression on plant roots

    Several bacterial strains of the Pseudomonas genus provide plant growth stimulation, plant protection against pests or bioremediation. Among these bacteria, P. fluorescens Pf29Arp reduces the severity of take-all, a disease caused by the pathogenic fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt) on wheat roots. In this study, we obtained a draft genome of Pf29Arp and subsequent comparative genomic analyses have revealed that this bacterial strain is closely related to strains of the ‘P. brassicacearum-like’ subgroup including P. brassicacearum ssp. brassicacearum NFM421 and P. fluorescens F113. Despite an overall chromosomal organization similar to these strains, a number of features including antibiotic synthesis gene clusters from secondary metabolism are not found in the Pf29Arp genome. But Pf29Arp possesses different protein secretion systems including type III (T3SS) and type VI (T6SS) secretion systems. Pf29Arp is the first Pseudomonas sp. strain described with four T6SS clusters (cluster I, II, III and IV). In addition, some protein-coding genes involved in the assembly of these secretion systems are basally expressed during Pf29Arp colonization of healthy wheat roots and display different expression patterns on necrotized roots caused by Ggt. These data suggest a role of T3SS and T6SS in the Pf29Arp adaptation to different root environments

    Combined strategy based on pre-activated analogs of oxazaphosphorines for increased therapeutic index and immune modulation

    Oxazaphosphorines (Oxaza) represented by cyclophosphamide (CPA) and ifosfamide (IFO) are still the corner stone of several polychemotherapy protocols as they are widely indicated in the treatment of numerous cancer from soft tissue sarcomas to lymphomas and immune-related diseases. However, Oxaza are prodrugs requiring cytochrome (CYP) P450 bioactivation responsible of limiting adverse effects. In the case of IFO, bioactivation leads to a low release of 4-OH-IFO (10%), which generates the active nitrogen mustard displaying DNA cross-links. Associated toxicities of IFO due to acrolein, (urotoxicity) and to chloroacetaldehyde (neuro and nephrotoxicity) have been described. Thus, increasing IFO therapeutic index could be of major interest. To circumvent these toxicities, our team has designed new pre-activated IFO analogs to avoid CYP bioactivation (Skarbek et al J Med Chem 2015). Among these analogues some have the ability to self-assemble as nanoassemblies (NAs), the others can be encapsulated within nano-lipid capsules (NLCs). These new drug delivery systems (DDS) can take advantage of passive targeting, as stealthiness of these DDS can be provided by PEGylation by using Cholesterol-polyethylene glycol or the use of surfactant. These DDS can also be functionalized by appropriate monoclonal antibodies leading to multi stage DDS with active targeting properties. Regarding CPA, it has been shown and described in literature that low doses of CPA enhance the immunity by promoting differentiation of CD4⁺ cell toward Th1. As IFO is isomeric form of CPA, it was assumed that IFO could also have such properties. Studies on immunocompetent MCA205 mouse model, an immunogenic fibrosarcoma mouse model, demonstrate a dose-dependent immunomodulation of IFO towards a modulation of the secretion of IFNy, IL-17A and IL-6 cytokines. The ongoing experiments on mouse model depleted in CD4⁺ T cells and CD8⁺ T cells show the antitumor efficacy of IFO 150mg/kg on these immune cells in tumor regression. Both strategies could lead to the design of nano-immuno-conjugates (NICs) which could benefit of the immunomodulatory effects of X-Oxaza combined to their antiproliferative properties targeted through immune checkpoint antibodies. These new functionalized DDS may provide a useful strategy to give specificity to active drugs used for many years in clinical practice.     Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b, leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W' boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed coupling combinations have been placed.     Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.     Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

    A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters

    Measurement of the Lambda(b) cross section and the anti-Lambda(b) to Lambda(b) ratio with Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda decays in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    The Lambda(b) differential production cross section and the cross section ratio anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) are measured as functions of transverse momentum pt(Lambda(b)) and rapidity abs(y(Lambda(b))) in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are based on Lambda(b) decays reconstructed in the exclusive final state J/Psi Lambda, with the subsequent decays J/Psi to an opposite-sign muon pair and Lambda to proton pion, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 inverse femtobarns. The product of the cross section times the branching ratio for Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda versus pt(Lambda(b)) falls faster than that of b mesons. The measured value of the cross section times the branching ratio for pt(Lambda(b)) > 10 GeV and abs(y(Lambda(b))) < 2.0 is 1.06 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.12 nb, and the integrated cross section ratio for anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) is 1.02 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.09, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
