    Super-Resolution of BVOC Emission Maps Via Domain Adaptation

    Enhancing the resolution of Biogenic Volatile Organic Compound (BVOC) emission maps is a critical task in remote sensing. Recently, some Super-Resolution (SR) methods based on Deep Learning (DL) have been proposed, leveraging data from numerical simulations for their training process. However, when dealing with data derived from satellite observations, the reconstruction is particularly challenging due to the scarcity of measurements to train SR algorithms with. In our work, we aim at super-resolving low resolution emission maps derived from satellite observations by leveraging the information of emission maps obtained through numerical simulations. To do this, we combine a SR method based on DL with Domain Adaptation (DA) techniques, harmonizing the different aggregation strategies and spatial information used in simulated and observed domains to ensure compatibility. We investigate the effectiveness of DA strategies at different stages by systematically varying the number of simulated and observed emissions used, exploring the implications of data scarcity on the adaptation strategies. To the best of our knowledge, there are no prior investigations of DA in satellite-derived BVOC maps enhancement.     Multi-BVOC Super-Resolution Exploiting Compounds Inter-Connection

    Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOCs) emitted from the terrestrial ecosystem into the Earth's atmosphere are an important component of atmospheric chemistry. Due to the scarcity of measurement, a reliable enhancement of BVOCs emission maps can aid in providing denser data for atmospheric chemical, climate, and air quality models. In this work, we propose a strategy to super-resolve coarse BVOC emission maps by simultaneously exploiting the contributions of different compounds. To this purpose, we first accurately investigate the spatial inter-connections between several BVOC species. Then, we exploit the found similarities to build a Multi-Image Super-Resolution (MISR) system, in which a number of emission maps associated with diverse compounds are aggregated to boost Super-Resolution (SR) performance. We compare different configurations regarding the species and the number of joined BVOCs. Our experimental results show that incorporating BVOCs' relationship into the process can substantially improve the accuracy of the super-resolved maps. Interestingly, the best results are achieved when we aggregate the emission maps of strongly uncorrelated compounds. This peculiarity seems to confirm what was already guessed for other data-domains, i.e., joined uncorrelated information are more helpful than correlated ones to boost MISR performance.     Speaker-Independent Microphone Identification in Noisy Conditions

    This work proposes a method for source device identification from speech recordings that applies neural-network-based denoising, to mitigate the impact of counter-forensics attacks using noise injection. The method is evaluated by comparing the impact of denoising on three state-of-the-art features for microphone classification, determining their discriminating power with and without denoising being applied. The proposed framework achieves a significant performance increase for noisy material, and more generally, validates the usefulness of applying denoising prior to device identification for noisy recordings

    Enhancing Biogenic Emission Maps Using Deep Learning

    Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOCs) play a critical role in biosphere-atmosphere interactions, being a key factor in the physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere and climate. Acquiring large and fine-grained BVOC emission maps is expensive and time-consuming, so most of the available BVOC data are obtained on a loose and sparse sampling grid or on small regions. However, high-resolution BVOC data are desirable in many applications, such as air quality, atmospheric chemistry, and climate monitoring. In this work, we propose to investigate the possibility of enhancing BVOC acquisitions, taking a step forward in explaining the relationships between plants and these compounds. We do so by comparing the performances of several state-of-the-art neural networks proposed for Single-Image Super-Resolution (SISR), showing how to adapt them to correctly handle emission data through preprocessing. Moreover, we also consider realistic scenarios, considering both temporal and geographical constraints. Finally, we present possible future developments in terms of Super-Resolution (SR) generalization, considering the scale-invariance property and super-resolving emissions from unseen compounds.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 3 table

    Coronary computed tomography angiography using model-based iterative reconstruction algorithms in the detection of significant coronary stenosis : how the plaque type influences the diagnostic performance

    Purpose: To evaluate the ability of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) with model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) algorithm in detecting significant coronary artery stenosis compared with invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Material and methods: We retrospectively identified 55 patients who underwent CCTA using the MBIR algorithm with evidence of at least one significant stenosis (≥ 50%) and an ICA within three months. Patients were stratified based on calcium score; stenoses were classified by type and by coronary segment involved. Dose-length-product was compared with the literature data obtained with previous reconstruction algorithms. Coronary artery stenosis was estimated on ICAs based on a qualitative method. Results: CCTA data were confirmed by ICA in 89% of subjects, and in 73% and 94% of patients with CS < 400 and ≥ 400, respectively. ICA confirmed 81% of calcific stenoses, 91% of mixed, and 67% of soft plaques. Both the dose exposure of patients with prospective acquisition (34) and the exposure of the whole population were significantly lower than the standard of reference (p < 0.001 and p = 0.007). Conclusions: CCTA with MBIR is valuable in detecting significant coronary artery stenosis with a solid reduction of radiation dose. Diagnostic performance was influenced by plaque composition, being lower compared with ICA for patients with lower CAC score and soft plaques; the visualisation of an intraluminal hypodensity could cause false positives, particularly in D1 and MO segments

    An unusual presentation of anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) syndrome in a 70-year-old man: a case report

    Background: We present a rare case of anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery syndrome in an elderly man, and we describe coronary computed tomographic angiographic imaging findings to improve diagnostic confidence for the evaluation of this uncommon coronary artery anomaly. Case presentation: A 70-year-old Caucasian man came to our hospital with slight limitation of physical activity (New York Heart Association class II). He was asymptomatic for angina, syncope, and palpitations. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging was performed after echocardiography because a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was suspected; a plausible coronary artery anomaly was demonstrated as collateral evidence. Subsequently, coronary computed tomographic angiography showed the anomalous origin of left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery; the coronary vessels appeared markedly dilated and tortuous. Dilated intercoronary vessels along the epicardial surface of the heart and dilated bronchial arteries, corresponding to collateral pathways, were observed. Left ventricular hypertrophy, delayed subendocardial enhancement, and mitral insufficiency were better evaluated on magnetic resonance images. Invasive coronary angiography confirmed the main findings. Given the patient’s age and clinical performance, surveillance with medical management was considered appropriate, and surgical repair was avoided. Conclusions: Confidence with the anatomic pattern and clinical significance of this anomalous condition is necessary to improve cardiac imaging evaluation ability. In our patient, coronary computed tomographic angiography proved to be a reliable imaging approach, superior to invasive coronary angiography in terms of diagnostic performance and patient safety

    Effect of the BH3 Mimetic Polyphenol (–)-Gossypol (AT-101) on the in vitro and in vivo Growth of Malignant Mesothelioma

    Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a primary tumor arising from mesothelial cells. The survival of MM patients following traditional chemotherapy is poor, thus innovative treatments for MM are needed. (-)-gossypol (AT-101) is a BH3 mimetic compound which possesses anti-tumoral activity by targeting multiple signaling transduction pathways. Several clinical trials employing AT-101 have been performed and some of them are still ongoing. Accordingly, we investigated the in vitro effects of AT-101 on cell proliferation, cell cycle regulation, pro-survival signaling pathways, apoptosis and autophagy of human (MM-B1, H-Meso-1, and MM-F1) and mouse (#40a) MM cell lines. In addition, we explored the in vivo anti-tumor activities of AT-101 in a mouse model, in which the transplantation of MM cells induces ascites in the peritoneal space. AT-101 inhibited in vitro MM cells survival in a dose- and time-dependent manner and triggered autophagy, but the process was then blocked and was coincident with apoptosis activation. To confirm the effect of AT-101 in inducing the apoptosis of MM cells, MM cells were simultaneously treated with AT-101 and with the caspase inhibitor, Z-VAD-FMK. Z-VAD-FMK was able to significantly reduce the number of cells in the subG1 phase compared to the treatment with AT-101 alone. This result corroborates the induction of cell death by apoptosis following treatment with AT-101. Indeed, Western blotting results showed that AT-101 increases Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, modulates p53 expression, activates caspase 9 and the cleavage of PARP-1. In addition, the treatment with AT-101 was able to: (a) decrease the ErbB2 protein expression; (b) increase the EGFR protein expression; (c) affect the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, p38 and AKT; (d) stimulate JNK1/2 and c-jun phosphorylation. Our in vivo results showed that the intraperitoneal administration of AT-101 increased the median survival of C57BL/6 mice intraperitoneally transplanted with #40a cells and reduced the risk of developing tumors. Our findings may have important implications for the design of MM therapies by employing AT-101 as an anticancer agent in combination with standard therapies

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    With the discovery of non-zero value of θ13\theta_{13} mixing angle, the next generation of long-baseline neutrino (LBN) experiments offers the possibility of obtaining statistically significant samples of muon and electron neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with large oscillation effects. In this document we intend to highlight the importance of Near Detector facilities in LBN experiments to both constrain the systematic uncertainties affecting oscillation analyses but also to perform, thanks to their close location, measurements of broad benefit for LBN physics goals. A strong European contribution to these efforts is possible

    I Cistercensi in Polonia tra riforma e controriforma

    Antonio Giganti w swoim artykule zajął się historią polskich cystersów w okresie reformacji i kontrreformacji. Badania oparł na dokumentach znajdujących się i udostępnionych w Archiwum Watykańskim. N a wstępie artykułu Autor nakreślił tło historyczne owych czasów, oraz zakreślił istotne myśli teologiczne dominujące w XVI wieku. Centrum odnowy życia duchowego szesnastowiecznej Europy był klasztor w Citeaux, a w odróżnieniu od Clunie, Zakonnicy z Citeaux nie dysponowali władzą absolutną. Natomiast sytuacja polskich cystersów była różna od sytuacji w innych krajach. Cystersi należeli do bogatych rodzin, w posiadaniu których znajdowały się biskupstwa. To sprawiło, że cystersi tracili swoje przywileje, zwłaszcza ten największy, tj. niezależności od lokalnej władzy kościelnej (egzempcja). Zakony cysterskie w Polsce nie były wolne od wpływów skutków reformacji, zwłaszcza na Pomorzu wy stępowało zjawisko kasacji zakonów. To z kolei wyzwoliło dążenia do ochrony cystersów od zgubnych wpływów reformacji. Ogromny wpływ na całokształt sytuacji zakonów cysterskich miała polityka społeczno-religijna w Polsce. Wiadomo bowiem, że Zygmunt Stary był tolerancyjny wobec innowierców. Wolność religijna znajdowała swoje odzwierciedlenie w ustawodawstwie polskim, np. Konferencja Warszawska z 1573 r. Autor podkreślił ogromny wpływ cystersów na kulturę Polski. Właśnie z tym zakonem należy wiązać początki gotyku w Polsce oraz, jak podkreślił Autor cystersi przynieśli do Polski nową technikę uprawiania ziemi. W końcowym fragmencie swojego artykułu Autor przytoczył korespondencję Edmunda od Krzyża, wysłannika zakonu z Citeaux
