    Possible interpretation of the ZbZ_b(10610) and ZbZ_b(10650) in a chiral quark model

    Motivated by the two charged bottomonium-like resonances ZbZ_b(10610) and ZbZ_b(10650) newly observed by the Belle collaboration, the possible molecular states composed of a pair of heavy mesons, BBˉ,BBˉ,BBˉ,BsBˉB\bar{B}, B\bar{B}^*, B^*\bar{B}^*, B_s\bar{B}, etc (in S-wave), are investigated in the framework of chiral quark models by the Gaussian expansion method. The bound states BBˉB\bar{B}^* and BBˉB^*\bar{B}^* with quantum numbers I(JPC)=1(1+)I(J^{PC})=1(1^{+-}), which are good candidates for the Zb(10610)Z_b(10610) and Zb(10650)Z_b(10650) respectively, are obtained. Other three bound states BBˉB\bar{B}^* with I(JPC)=0(1++)I(J^{PC})=0(1^{++}), BBˉB^*\bar{B}^* with I(JPC)=1(0++),0(2++)I(J^{PC})=1(0^{++}), 0(2^{++}) are predicted. These states may be observed in open-bottom or hidden-bottom decay channel of highly excited Υ\Upsilon. When extending directly the quark model to the hidden color channel of the multi-quark system, more deeply bound states are found. Future experimental search of those states will cast doubt on the validity of applying the chiral constituent quark model to the hidden color channel directly.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, title and some arguments in the abstract and section 5 are revised, results unchange

    Defining Global Gene Expression Changes of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Axis in Female sGnRH-Antisense Transgenic Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio)

    BACKGROUND: The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is critical in the development and regulation of reproduction in fish. The inhibition of neuropeptide gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) expression may diminish or severely hamper gonadal development due to it being the key regulator of the axis, and then provide a model for the comprehensive study of the expression patterns of genes with respect to the fish reproductive system. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a previous study we injected 342 fertilized eggs from the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with a gene construct that expressed antisense sGnRH. Four years later, we found a total of 38 transgenic fish with abnormal or missing gonads. From this group we selected the 12 sterile females with abnormal ovaries in which we combined suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) and cDNA microarray analysis to define changes in gene expression of the HPG axis in the present study. As a result, nine, 28, and 212 genes were separately identified as being differentially expressed in hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovary, of which 87 genes were novel. The number of down- and up-regulated genes was five and four (hypothalamus), 16 and 12 (pituitary), 119 and 93 (ovary), respectively. Functional analyses showed that these genes involved in several biological processes, such as biosynthesis, organogenesis, metabolism pathways, immune systems, transport links, and apoptosis. Within these categories, significant genes for neuropeptides, gonadotropins, metabolic, oogenesis and inflammatory factors were identified. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: This study indicated the progressive scaling-up effect of hypothalamic sGnRH antisense on the pituitary and ovary receptors of female carp and provided comprehensive data with respect to global changes in gene expression throughout the HPG signaling pathway, contributing towards improving our understanding of the molecular mechanisms and regulative pathways in the reproductive system of teleost fish

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    Long term repeated burning in a wet sclerophyll forest reduces fungal and bacterial biomass and responses to carbon substrates

    Soils from a long term experiment, established in 1972, incorporating replicated treatments of burning every 2 and 4 years with control plots were sampled in 2005 to determine the changes in microbial community structure, measured using phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) and functional diversity measured using multiple substrate induced respiration (SIR) tests (MicroResp™). Microbial biomass (total PLFA) in the 2 year burn treatments was 50% less than both the control and 4-year burn treatments. There was also concomitantly less respiratory activity which mirrored the known changes in soil C and substrate quality. Contrary to other studies soil bacterial PLFAs were reduced as much as fungal PLFAs in the 2-year burn and the short term (6 h) SIR of arginine, lysine, galactose and trehalose were significantly inhibited in the 2-year burn soils. The data suggest that a 4-year burn is a more sustainable practice for maintaining the original structure and function of the forest belowground ecosystem

    Evidence of interactive effects of late-pregnancy exposure to air pollution and extreme temperature on preterm birth in China: A nationwide study

    Perinatal exposure to heat and air pollution has been shown to affect the risk of preterm birth (PTB). However, limited evidence exists regarding their joint effects, particularly in heavily polluted regions like China. This study utilized data from the ongoing China Birth Cohort Study, including 103 040 birth records up to December 2020, and hourly measurements of air pollution (PM2.5, NO2, and O3) and temperature. We assessed the nonlinear associations between air pollution and temperature extereme exposures and PTB by employing generalized additive models with restricted cubic slines. Air pollution and temperature thresholds (corresponding to minimum PTB risks) were determined by the lowest Akaike Information Criterion. We found that maternal exposures to PM2.5, NO2, O3, and both low and high temperature during the third trimester of pregnancy were independently associated with increased risk of PTB. The adjusted risk ratios for PTB of PM2.5, O3, NO2, and temperature at the 95th percentile against thresholds were 1.32 (95% CI: 1.23, 1.42), 1.33 (95% CI: 1.18, 1.50), 1.44 (95% CI: 1.33, 1.56) and 1.70 (95% CI: 1.56, 1.85), respectively. Positive additive interactions [relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) > 0] of PM2.5-high temperature (HT), O3-HT, O3-low temperature (LT) are identified, but the interactive effects of PM2.5 and LT were negative (RERI < 0). These observed independent effects of air pollution and temperature, along with their potential joint effects, have important implications for future studies and the development of public health policies aimed at improving perinatal health outcomes.</p

    Steric-Hindrance-Functionalized Polydiarylfluorenes: Conformational Behavior, Stabilized Blue Electroluminescence, and Efficient Amplified Spontaneous Emission

    Control of the hierarchical molecular organization of polydiarylfluorenes by synthetic strategies is significant for optimizing photophysical properties as well as the performance of light-emitting devices. Herein, for the suppression of molecular aggregation and enhancement of luminescence efficiency, a series of steric units were introduced into polydiarylfluorenes by copolymerization, with the aim of integrating the advantages of the steric-hindrance effect and of the β-phase. Optical and Raman spectroscopies revealed a β-phase conformation for a polymer copolymerized with spiro­[fluorene-9,9′-xanthene] (SFX), with photoluminescence (PL) peaks at 454, 482, and 517 nm. Moreover, the morphological stability and electroluminescence (EL) stability were also improved without compromising the performance of the polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs). Furthermore, three steric-hindrance-functionalized copolymers showed significantly decreased thresholds for amplified spontaneous emission (<i>E</i><sub>th</sub><sup>ASE</sup>) and enhanced stability following thermal annealing treatment. These results indicate that steric-hindrance functionalization is a superior approach to improve the overall stability and optoelectronic properties for blue-light-emitting π-conjugated polymers
