    Phase-type distributions for studying variability in resistve memories

    A new statistical approach has been developed to analyze Resistive Random Access Memory (RRAM) variability. The stochastic nature of the physical processes behind the operation of resistive memories makes variability one of the key issues to solve from the industrial viewpoint of these new devices. The statistical features of variability have been usually studied making use of Weibull distribution. However, this probability distribution does not work correctly for some resistive memories, in particular for those based on the Ni/HfO2/Si structure thar has been employed in this work. A completely new approach based on phase-type modelling is proposed in this paper to characterize the randomness of resistive memories operation.     Determinar la incidencia de padres y madres adolescentes en el desarrollo integral de sus hijos durante la primera infancia, a partir de la consolidación de su proyecto de vida, en la localidad de Bosa UPZ 86 porvenir.Este proyecto se presenta como una propuesta de investigación descriptiva con un enfoque cualitativo para determinar la incidencia de padres y madres adolescentes en el desarrollo integral de la primera infancia a partir de la consolidación de su proyecto de vida en la localidad de Bosa UPZ 86 Porvenir. El tema de la investigación es relevante frente a la labor como docentes, ya que el elevado número de jóvenes adolescentes que son padres influyen directamente en el desarrollo integral de los niños y niñas, puesto que se evidencia la falta de elementos que les permiten desarrollar un proyecto de vida, y a la vez establecer pautas de crianza claras que les ayuden a formar sus hijos. Teniendo en cuenta que “al año nacen cerca de 159.000 bebes de madres adolescentes, el ICBF alerto sobre esta situación y pidió esfuerzos conjuntos para trabajar en la prevención”.This project reports a descriptive qualitative research proposal to determine the incidence of teenager parents in the comprehensive development of first infancy from their life project consolidation in Bosa UPZ 86 Porvenir locality. The results show that teenager parent can confuse life project with short time goals; to prevent teenagers pregnancy is not sufficient to offer them information about contraceptive methods when they are parents then tend to repeat raising patterns that influent directly in the harmonic children development. Taking into account the information obtained during the research process, a Web page is going to be design as a tool that gather and spread clear, practical resources to guide the adolescent

    Risk factors and outcome of COVID-19 in patients with hematological malignancies

    Background: Prognostic factors of poor outcome in patients with hematological malignancies and COVID-19 are poorly defned. Patients and methods: This was a Spanish transplant group and cell therapy (GETH) multicenter retrospective observational study, which included a large cohort of blood cancer patients with laboratory-confrmed SARS-CoV-2 infection through PCR assays from March 1st 2020 to May 15th 2020. Results: We included 367 pediatric and adult patients with hematological malignancies, including recipients of autologous (ASCT) (n=58) or allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) (n=65) from 41 hospitals in Spain. Median age of patients was 64 years (range 1-93.8). Recipients of ASCT and allo-SCT showed lower mortality rates (17% and 18%, respectively) compared to non-SCT patients (31%) (p=0.02). Prognostic factors identifed for day 45 overall mortality (OM) by logistic regression multivariate analysis included age>70 years [odds ratio (OR) 2.1, 95% con‑ fdence interval (CI) 1.2-3.8, p=0.011]; uncontrolled hematological malignancy (OR 2.9, 95% CI 1.6-5.2, p20 mg/dL (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.7-6.4, p<0.0001). In multivariate analysis of 216 patients with very severe COVID-19, treatment with azithromycin or low dose corticosteroids was associated with lower OM (OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.2-0.89 and OR 0.31, 95% CI 0.11-0.87, respectively, p=0.02) whereas the use of hidroxycloroquine did not show signifcant improvement in OM (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.37-1.1, P=0.1). Conclusions: In most patients with hematological malignancies COVID-19 mortality was directly driven by older age, disease status, performance status, as well as by immune (neutropenia) parameters and level of infammation (high CRP). Use of azithromycin and low dose corticosteroids may be of value in very severe COVID-19

    The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use.     Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe

    COVID-19 symptoms at hospital admission vary with age and sex: results from the ISARIC prospective multinational observational study

    Background: The ISARIC prospective multinational observational study is the largest cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We present relationships of age, sex, and nationality to presenting symptoms. Methods: International, prospective observational study of 60 109 hospitalized symptomatic patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 recruited from 43 countries between 30 January and 3 August 2020. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate relationships of age and sex to published COVID-19 case definitions and the most commonly reported symptoms. Results: ‘Typical’ symptoms of fever (69%), cough (68%) and shortness of breath (66%) were the most commonly reported. 92% of patients experienced at least one of these. Prevalence of typical symptoms was greatest in 30- to 60-year-olds (respectively 80, 79, 69%; at least one 95%). They were reported less frequently in children (≤ 18 years: 69, 48, 23; 85%), older adults (≥ 70 years: 61, 62, 65; 90%), and women (66, 66, 64; 90%; vs. men 71, 70, 67; 93%, each P &lt; 0.001). The most common atypical presentations under 60 years of age were nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain, and over 60 years was confusion. Regression models showed significant differences in symptoms with sex, age and country. Interpretation: This international collaboration has allowed us to report reliable symptom data from the largest cohort of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Adults over 60 and children admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are less likely to present with typical symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are common atypical presentations under 30 years. Confusion is a frequent atypical presentation of COVID-19 in adults over 60 years. Women are less likely to experience typical symptoms than men

    Ecological determinants of prevalence of the male-killing bacterium Arsenophonus nasoniae

    Male-killing bacteria are found in a broad range of arthropods. Arsenophonus nasoniae is a male-killing bacterium, causing a 80% reduction of the male progeny in infected Nasonia vitripennis wasps. Although the discovery of A. nasoniae dates from the early 80′s, knowledge about the biology and ecology of this endosymbiont is still scarce. One of these poorly studied features is the ecological factors underlying A. nasoniae incidence on its Nasonia spp. hosts in different geographical locations. Here, we studied the prevalence of A. nasoniae in Iberian wild populations of its host N. vitripennis. This wasp species is a common parasitoid of the blowfly Protocalliphora azurea pupae, which in turn is a parasite of hole-nesting birds, such as the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus). We also examined the effects of bird rearing conditions on the prevalence of A. nasoniae through a brood size manipulation experiment (creating enlarged, control and reduced broods). Both the wasp and bacterium presence were tested through PCR assays in blowfly pupae. We found A. nasoniae in almost half (47%) of nests containing blowflies parasitized by N. vitripennis. The prevalence of A. nasoniae was similar in the two geographical areas examined (central Portugal and southeastern Spain) and the probability of infection by A. nasoniae was independent of the number of blowfly pupae in the nest. Experimental manipulation of brood size did not affect the prevalence of A. nasoniae nor the prevalence of its host, N. vitripennis. These results suggest that the incidence of A. nasoniae in natural populations of N. vitripennis is high in the Iberian Peninsula, and the infestation frequency of nests by N. vitripennis carrying A. nasoniae is spatially stable in this geographical region independently of bird rearing conditions

    Qualitative composition and extractability of grape skin tannins during the ripening period. Role of the extraction solvent

    Aims: The changes that skin tannins undergo during ripening, which are crucial for their extractability and transfer to wine, were followed in Monastrell grape skins. To elucidate whether the commonly used analytical method involving extraction with 70 % acetone overestimates the quantity of tannins that could be extracted during the winemaking process, the extraction with aqueous 12.5 % ethanol was also monitored throughout the ripening period. Methods and results: When 70 % acetone was used as extraction solvent, the results showed that skin tannin concentration decreased towards maturity. When tannins were extracted with 12.5 % ethanol, their concentration during the first part of maturation was much higher than that obtained with the acetone extraction. However, both methods gave similar quantitative results for the last sampling dates, although the mean degree of polymerization (mDP) of the extracted tannins was significantly lower using the ethanol method. Conclusions: The acetone method provides, for ripe grapes, an accurate prediction of what may be quantitatively extracted by a fermenting medium, although it overestimates the tannin mDP. Significance and impact of the study: The structural composition of tannins (and not only their concentration) might be essential for defining the sensorial characteristics of the wine and the differences observed in tannin mDP between the acetone and the ethanol method may be of importance when predicting wine organoleptic characteristics
