    Economic Importance of Air Transport and Airport Activities in Belgium. NBB Working Papers. No. 158, 10 March 2009

    This study is a publication issued by the Microeconomic Analysis service of the National Bank of Belgium, in partnership with the Department of Transport and Regional Economics of the University of Antwerp (UA). It is the outcome of a first research project on the Belgian airport and air transport sector. The former relates to the economic activities within the airports of Antwerp, Brussels, Charleroi, Kortrijk, Liège and Ostend, while the latter concentrates on the air transport business as a whole. In the past few years, the logistics business has come to play a significant part in income creation in our country, whose economy is to a large extent driven by services. Air transport and airports in particular are driving forces in this context, not only in terms of business generated within the air transport cluster, but also in terms of airports' attractiveness. On world scale an overall growth of cargo and passengers could be observed in the last ten years. However, the air transport sector has undergone a major crisis during the 2001-2003 period, when passenger traffic numbers first fell sharply and then stagnated. Only after 2003 this activity has picked up again and this until the third quarter of 2008. Cargo traffic on its part recovered already in 2002. In Belgium, a similar evolution can be observed. It should be stressed however that between 1997 and 2007 cargo volumes grew much faster than passenger traffic did. The rankings of European airports underline the importance of cargo traffic for Belgium: In 2006 Brussels, Liège and Ostend-Bruges respectively occupy ranks 6, 8, and 20 in the European cargo airport top 20, while for passenger airports, Brussels can only be found at the end of the top 20. In this study, a sectoral approach has been followed by focusing, for every airport, on two major economic activity components: the air transport cluster on the one hand and other airport-related sectors on the other hand. In that respect, annual accounts data from the Central Balance Sheet Office were used for the calculation of direct effects, the social balance sheet analysis and the study of financial ratios. Due to an inevitable time lag in the data provision, the analysis was limited to 2006. Like in other sectoral studies published by the Bank, indirect effects have also been estimated on the basis of data from the National Accounts Institute. In 2006, the total activities under review –direct and indirect, inside and outside airports- accounted for roughly 6.2 billion euro, i.e. 2 p.c. of Belgium's GDP and domestic employment. Considering the direct effects only, these percentages both amounted to 0.8 p.c. The three major airports, i.e. Brussels, Charleroi and Liège, alone account for 95.2 p.c. of the direct value added generated by the six airports under review. They represent 0.5 p.c. of Belgian GDP and, taking account of the indirect effects, 1.1 p.c. of the national income. Furthermore, it has to be pointed out that most Belgian airports are specialised. While the airports of Liège and Ostend focus on air cargo, Charleroi Airport deals mostly with low-cost passenger transport.     The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed by the Code has already been discussed in Zootaxa (Dubois & Nemésio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; Nemésio 2009a–b; Dubois 2009; Gentile & Snell 2009; Minelli 2009; Cianferoni & Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This question was again raised in a letter supported by 35 signatories published in the journal Nature (Pape et al. 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 September 2016, the following rebuttal (strictly limited to 300 words as per the editorial rules of Nature) was submitted to Nature, which on 18 October 2016 refused to publish it. As we think this problem is a very important one for zoological taxonomy, this text is published here exactly as submitted to Nature, followed by the list of the 493 taxonomists and collection-based researchers who signed it in the short time span from 20 September to 6 October 2016

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

    Die gesamt Arbeit im PDF-FormatIn der vorliegenden Arbeit wird der Einfluß physiologischer Veränderungen auf quantitativ meßbare Verhaltensweisen an Großkatzen untersucht. Als sichtbare physiologische Einflußgröße galt dabei die Zeitspanne des Östrus mit den bekannten Veränderungen des Hormonstatus. Diese Phase wird auch als Rolligkeit bezeichnet. Die Beobachtung erfolgte an elf Tieren der Gattung Panthera des Tierparks Berlin-Friedrichsfelde über einen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren. Darin eingeschlossen war die Hauptbeobachtungszeit von Dezember 1996 bis März 1997. In diesen drei Monaten wurden während der täglichen 4,5 Stunden Beobachtungszeit Aufzeichnungen über die Aktivität der Tiere zwei Stunden vor der Fütterung durchgeführt. Es erfolgte die Untersuchung der Schrittfrequenz zwei Stunden vor der Fütterung, eine halbe Stunde vor der Fütterung und nach der Futteraufnahme; weiterhin die Aufnahme der Putzfrequenz, der Kaufrequenz, der Trinkfrequenz und der Atemfrequenz. Die Beobachtungstiere gehörten zu vier verschiedenen Arten. Dabei bildeten die Jaguare (Panthera onca), Schwarzen Panther (Panthera pardus), Chinaleoparden (Panthera pardus japonensis), Sumatratiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) und die Indischen Löwen (Panthera leo persica) jeweils echte, gemeinsam gehaltene Paare. Im Gegensatz dazu war eine in die Untersuchungen einbezogene Bengaltigerin (Panthera tigris tigris) einzeln untergebracht. Alle mit den männlichen Partnern gehaltenen weiblichen Tiere zeigten während der dreimonatigen Hauptbeobachtungszeit ein oder zwei Rolligkeitsperioden. Dagegen waren bei der einzeln gehaltenen Bengaltigerin Anzeichen eines Östrus nicht sichtbar. Trotz des sehr inhomogenen Tiermaterials (vier Tierarten, verschiedene Haltungsbedingungen, unterschiedliches Alter) zeigten die Ergebnisse z.T. deutliche Veränderungen der genannten Verhaltensparameter mit dem Eintritt der Paarungsperiode. Die Aktivitätsprotokollierung im Zeitraum von zwei Stunden vor der Fütterung erbrachte eine markante Abnahme der lokomotorischen Aktivität zugunsten des Ruheverhaltens während der Paarungsperioden. Dabei zeigte diese Verhaltensweise deutliche geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede. Die männlichen Tiere veränderten ihr Aktivitätsmuster nur an den Tagen, an denen Paarungen durchgeführt wurden, und zwar abhängig von der Anzahl der Paarungen. Bei den weiblichen Tiere hingegen sank der Anteil der lokomotorischen Aktivität bereits eine Woche vor Beginn des Östrus und stieg nach Ende der Rolligkeit erst langsam wieder an. Als Ursache hierfür wird eine Dreifachwirkung gesehen, zusammengesetzt aus Motivationsverschiebung aufgrund des Fortpflanzungsverhaltens, einer physischen Ermüdung durch die Paarungen und einer dämpfenden Wirkung des Abbauproduktes des Gelbkörperhormones Progesteron. Die allein gehaltenen Bengaltigerin zeigte trotz fehlender Östruszeichen Schwankungen in der lokomotorischen Aktivität, die in vierwöchigem Abstand auftraten. Die Schrittfrequenz verringerte sich zu allen drei Meßzeiten während des Östrus gegenüber dem Interöstrus. Diese Veränderungen betrafen beide Geschlechter. Der Grund wird in einer physischen Ermüdung der Tiere durch die Paarungen gesehen. Auch die Bengaltigerin zeigte Schwankungen in der Schrittfrequenz. Sie korrelierten mit einer Woche Verzögerung mit den Aktivitätsschwankungen. Die Verringerung der Putzfrequenz während der Paarungsperiode war nicht signifikant. Bei einem weiblichen und einem männlichen Tier konnten deutliche Veränderungen innerhalb des Östrus festgestellt werden. Bei beiden Tieren sank während der ersten Östrushälfte die Putzfrequenz gegenüber dem Mittelwert des Interöstrus, während sie gegen Ende der Rolligkeit über diesen Mittelwert anstieg. Ob diese Verteilung für alle Tiere zutraf konnte aufgrund unregelmäßiger Meßreihen nicht festgestellt werden. Die Kaufrequenz veränderte sich mit der Rolligkeit signifikant geschlechtsspezifisch. Die weiblichen Tiere kauten deutlich langsamer, während die Kaufrequenz der männlichen Tiere leicht anstieg. Als Grund dafür wird eine Dominanzverschiebung innerhalb der Paare gesehen. Von der Trinkfrequenz konnten nicht genügend Werte für ein Auswertung aufgenommen werden. Es wurde als Beispiel für zukünftige Untersuchungen eine Methode zur Aufnahme des Trinkverhaltens mittels Tonträgern und die anschließende EDV-gestützte Auswertung dargestellt. Die Atemfrequenz zeigte innerhalb einer Zyklusphase starke Schwankungen. Deshalb sollte die in den Mittelwerten erkennbare Tendenz einer Abnahme der Anzahl der Atembewegungen pro Minute während der Rolligkeit in weiterführenden Beobachtungen untersucht werden. Insgesamt zeigten alle untersuchten Verhaltensparameter während des Östrus eine Abnahme oder eine Tendenz der Abnahme in ihren Frequenzvergleichen gegenüber dem Interöstrus. In weiterführenden zukünftigen Untersuchungen sollte deshalb auch nach zusätzlichen zu den oben, für jede Verhaltensweise einzeln genannten Ursachen geforscht werden. Dazu sind vergleichende Beobachtungen an einzeln und paarweise gehaltenen Großkatzen nötig. Vorteilhaft wären auch gleichzeitige Untersuchungen des Hormonstatus der Tiere.This paper investigates the influence of physiological changes to measurable signs of the behaviour of large cats. The physiological change was the change of hormone level during the oestrus cycle. Eleven numbers of the genus Panthera were observed during a period of two years in the Berlin - Friedrichsfelde zoo. Main observations took place from December 1996 till March 1997. It was measured the general activity in a period of two hours before feeding. As additionally parameters were investigated: the step frequency two hours, thirty minutes before and immediately after feeding, the clean frequency, the chew frequency, the drink frequency and the breath frequency. The investigations were taken in five pairs of different species: jaguar (Panthera onca), black panther (Panthera pardus), clouded leopard (Panthera pardus japonensis), Sumatra tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) and Indian lion (Panthera leo persica). Also a single Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) was investigated. All females, which lived together with a male, had one to two oestrus cycles within the three month observation, where as at the single female an oestrus could not be recognised. It could be found significant changes of activity during the oestrus. The walking activity two hours before feeding decreased significantly during oestrus of the females. Therefor there was a marketable difference between females and males. Males changed their activity only at days with copulation?s and depending on the number of copulation?s. Females decreased their walking activity already one week before oestrus and increased slowly after it. The reason is seen as threefold - change in motivation due to the breeding behaviour, physiological exhausting due to the copulations and the supressing influence of the biochemical reduction product of progesteron. Deviations every 4 weeks of walking activity at the single female tiger could also be recognised although there were no signs for oestrus. The step frequency decreased significantly at all measurements during the oestrus Those changes affected both sex. It was supposed to result from physical exhausting after copulation?s. Changes in the step frequency occurred also at the single female Bengal tiger. They followed the activity changes at one week delay. A significant decrease of clean frequency could not be recognised. Only at one male and one female could be found a significant decrease during the first part of oestrus and increase at the end of oestrus in comparison to the average. A general conclusion for this fact can not be drawn due to irregular measurements of this parameter. During copulation time the chew frequency changed very much depending on the sex. Females chewed much slower, where as males faster. Probably this fact results from change in dominance. The drink frequency could not be measured satisfactoinary. For future investigations an acoustic method followed by a computer analysis is presented. The breath frequency differed significantly during one cycle. Therefore it is suggested to investigate the trend of decreasing averages of breath frequency during oestrus additionally. It can be concluded, that all described activities showed a trend of decrease during oestrus. Further investigations should search for mentioned occurs. It should be compared single and in pair living large cats. Helpful would be the analyses of hormone level at the same time
