    Shares in the EMCA : the time is ripe for true no par value shares in the EU, and the 2nd directive is not an obstacle

    The most interesting proposal in the draft European Model Companies Act ( EMCA) concerning shares and the focus of this Article is the recommendation to introduce true no par value shares, as they have been in use in the US for many years and were introduced in Australia, New Zealand but also Finland more recently. Contrary to what has often been assumed, the 2nd EU Company Law Directive does not preclude no par value shares. There is nothing in the wording of the Directive to suggest otherwise, and the reference in the Directive to shares without a nominal value is a reference to Belgian law, which has allowed true no par value shares in all but name since at least 1913. EU member states could therefore introduce such shares even for public companies. True no par value shares offer a far more flexible framework in case of capital increases or mergers, but since under a no par value system there is no link between par value and shareholder rights, additional disclosure about these rights might be warranted under a no par value system. Traditional par value shares offer no protection to creditors, shareholders or other stakeholders, so that their abolition should not be mourned. The threat of new share issues at an unacceptably high discount is more efficiently countered by disclosure and shareholder decision rights

    Solving second kind integral equations by Galerkin methods with continuous orthogonal wavelets

    AbstractIn this paper, We use the continuous wavelets on the interval constructed by Cohen et al. (Appl. Comput. Harm. Anal. 1 (1993) 54–81) to solve the second kind integral equations. To this end, we give the decomposition and reconstruction algorithm for these wavelets, and construct the quadrature formulae for the calculation of inner products of any functions and the scaling functions, which are required in the wavelet-Galerkin methods for integral equations. In this method, the integral kernels are represented in these wavelet bases as sparse matrices, to high precision. Thus, we present an efficient algorithm for numerical solution of second kind integral equations

    DialCoT Meets PPO: Decomposing and Exploring Reasoning Paths in Smaller Language Models

    Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting has proven to be effective in enhancing the reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) with at least 100 billion parameters. However, it is ineffective or even detrimental when applied to reasoning tasks in Smaller Language Models (SLMs) with less than 10 billion parameters. To address this limitation, we introduce Dialogue-guided Chain-of-Thought (DialCoT) which employs a dialogue format to generate intermediate reasoning steps, guiding the model toward the final answer. Additionally, we optimize the model's reasoning path selection using the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm, further enhancing its reasoning capabilities. Our method offers several advantages compared to previous approaches. Firstly, we transform the process of solving complex reasoning questions by breaking them down into a series of simpler sub-questions, significantly reducing the task difficulty and making it more suitable for SLMs. Secondly, we optimize the model's reasoning path selection through the PPO algorithm. We conduct comprehensive experiments on four arithmetic reasoning datasets, demonstrating that our method achieves significant performance improvements compared to state-of-the-art competitors.Comment: Accepted to EMNLP 202

    Method for measurement of the density of thin films of small organic molecules

    An accurate and sensitive method is reported to measure the thin-film density of vacuum-deposited, small-molecular organic semiconductor materials. A spectrophotometer and surface profiler had been used to determine the mass and thickness of organic thin film, respectively. The calculated density of tris-͑8-hydroxyquinolato͒ aluminum ͑Alq 3 ͒ thin film was 1.31± 0.01 g / cm 3 . Vacuum pressures and thin-film growth rates are found to have less impact on the thin-film density of organic material. However, the thin-film density of organic material strongly depends on its chemical structure and molecular weight. Specifically, the chemical structure determines the density of organic material that affects the molecular volume and intermolecular stacking

    Mestrado em Enfermagem, Especialização Saúde Mental e Psiquiátrica, 2011, Escola Superior de Enfermagem de LisboaO desenvolvimento de competências resulta de um aumento de conhecimentos científicos, técnicos e éticos e da sua aplicação à prática profissional, através de um processo de experimentação, treino e reflexão, conjugando características pessoais e profissionais na acção. Este processo organizou-se em torno de dois contextos, ambulatório e internamento do DPSM, do H. S. Francisco Xavier. O primeiro decorreu nas Equipas Comunitárias de Psiquiatria e Saúde Mental de Cascais e da Parede e no Fórum Sócio-ocupacional de Cascais; o segundo na Unidade de Internamento de Psiquiatria de doentes agudos do sexo masculino. O principal alvo dos cuidados foi as PDMG, às quais foi identificada uma necessidade de cuidados de enfermagem visando a promoção da saúde física e mental. A evidência comprova que as PDMG, designadamente os portadores de esquizofrenia, apresentam uma taxa de mortalidade precoce, cerca 10 a 15 anos menos do que a população em geral, assim como uma elevada prevalência de co-morbilidades físicas fortemente condicionada pelos estilos de vida não saudáveis e estratégias de coping ineficazes. Como resposta a esta necessidade de cuidados de enfermagem foi construído e implementado o programa “ SER + saudável”, desenvolvido com três grupos distintos de clientes e tendo por base, três objectivos principais: Promover estilos de vida saudáveis nas PDMG; Incentivar o desenvolvimento de estratégias de coping eficazes nas PDMG; e Promover o desenvolvimento de competências básicas de comunicação nas PDMG. Na implementação do programa segundo os contextos, constatou-se que os clientes atribuíram um enfoque diferente aos conteúdos abordados. Assim, o grupo comunitário valorizou aspectos relacionados com a saúde física e vida em sociedade, enquanto o grupo do internamento se centrou na gestão dos sintomas e na prevenção da recaída. O Programa “ SER + saudável” foi avaliado na sua globalidade pelos clientes, como tendo um impacto positivo no seu bem-estar, pelos benefícios na interacção social e pelo aumento dos conhecimentos adquiridos. Estes resultados parecem indicar que o programa contribuiu para o desenvolvimento das estratégias de Coping das PDMG

    A modular assembly of spinal cord-like tissue allows targeted tissue repair in the transected spinal cord

    Tissue engineering–based neural construction holds promise in providing organoids with defined differentiation and therapeutic potentials. Here, a bioengineered transplantable spinal cord–like tissue (SCLT) is assembled in vitro by simulating the white matter and gray matter composition of the spinal cord using neural stem cell–based tissue engineering technique. Whether the organoid would execute targeted repair in injured spinal cord is evaluated. The integrated SCLT, assembled by white matter–like tissue (WMLT) module and gray matter–like tissue (GMLT) module, shares architectural, phenotypic, and functional similarities to the adult rat spinal cord. Organotypic coculturing with the dorsal root ganglion or muscle cells shows that the SCLT embraces spinal cord organogenesis potentials to establish connections with the targets, respectively. Transplantation of the SCLT into the transected spinal cord results in a significant motor function recovery of the paralyzed hind limbs in rats. Additionally, targeted spinal cord tissue repair is achieved by the modular design of SCLT, as evidenced by an increased remyelination in the WMLT area and an enlarged innervation in the GMLT area. More importantly, the pro‐regeneration milieu facilitates the formation of a neuronal relay by the donor neurons, allowing the conduction of descending and ascending neural inputs

    Design, Synthesis, Mechanisms of Action, and Toxicity of Novel 20( S )-Sulfonylamidine Derivatives of Camptothecin as Potent Antitumor Agents

    Twelve novel 20-sulfonylamidine derivatives (9a–9l) of camptothecin (1) were synthesized via a Cu-catalyzed three-component reaction. They showed similar or superior cytotoxicity compared with that of irinotecan (3) against A-549, DU-145, KB, and multidrug-resistant (MDR) KBvin tumor cell lines. Compound 9a demonstrated better cytotoxicity against MDR cells compared with that of 1 and 3. Mechanistically, 9a induced significant DNA damage by selectively inhibiting Topoisomerase (Topo) I and activating the ATM/Chk related DNA damage-response pathway. In xenograft models, 9a demonstrated significant activity without overt adverse effects at 5 and 10 mg/kg, comparable to 3 at 100 mg/kg. Notably, 9a at 300 mg/kg (i.p.) showed no overt toxicity in contrast to 1 (LD50 56.2 mg/kg, i.p.) and 3 (LD50 177.5 mg/kg, i.p.). Intact 9a inhibited Topo I activity in a cell-free assay in a manner similar to that of 1, confirming that 9a is a new class of Topo I inhibitor. 20-Sulfonylamidine 1-derivative 9a merits development as an anticancer clinical trial candidate

    Oxygen carrying capacity of salvaged blood in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting surgery : a prospective observational study

    BACKGROUND: Intraoperative cell salvage (ICS), hereby referred to ‘mechanical red cell salvage’, has been widely used and proven to be an effective way to reduce or avoid the need for allogeneic red blood cells (RBCs)transfusion and its associated complications in surgeries involving major blood loss. However, little is known about the influence of this technique on the functional state of salvaged RBCs. Furthermore, there are no articles that describe the change of free hemoglobin (fHb) in salvage blood during storage, which is a key index of the quality control of salvaged blood. Therefore, in this study, the influence of ICS on the function of salvaged RBCs and the changes of salvaged RBCs during storage were studied with respect to the presence of oxyhemoglobin affinity (recorded as a P(50) value) and the level of 2, 3-diphosphoglycerate (2, 3-DPG) and fHb by comparing salvaged RBCs with self-venous RBCs and 2-week-old packed RBCs. METHODS: Fifteen patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) surgery were enrolled. Blood was collected and processed using a Dideco Electa device. The level of P(50), 2, 3-DPG and fHB from salvaged RBCs, venous RBCs and 2-week-old packed RBCs was measured. We also measured the changes of these indicators among salvaged RBCs at 4 h (storage at 21–24 °C) and at 24 h (storage at 1–6 °C). RESULTS: The P(50) value of salvaged RBCs at 0 h (28.77 ± 0.27 mmHg) was significantly higher than the value of venous RBCs (27.07 ± 0.23 mmHg, p = 0.000) and the value of the 2-week-old packed RBCs (16.26 ± 0.62 mmHg, p = 0.000). P(50) value did not change obviously at 4 h (p = 0.121) and 24 h (p = 0.384) compared with the value at 0 h. The 2, 3-DPG value of salvaged RBCs at 0 h (17.94 ± 6.91 μmol/g Hb) was significantly higher than the value of venous RBCs (12.73 ± 6.52 mmHg, p = 0.007) and the value of the 2-week-old packed RBCs (2.62 ± 3.13 mmHg, p = 0.000). The level of 2, 3-DPG slightly decreased at 4 h (p = 0.380) and 24 h (p = 0.425) compared with the value at 0 h. Percentage of hemolysis of the salvaged blood at 0 h(0.51 ± 0.27 %) was significantly higher than the level of venous blood (0.07 ± 0.05 %, p = 0.000) and the value of 2-week-old packed RBCs (0.07 ± 0.05 %, p = 0.000), and reached 1.11 ± 0.42 % at 4 h (p = 0.002) and 1.83 ± 0.77 % at 24 h (p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: The oxygen transport function of salvaged RBCs at 0 h was not influenced by the cell salvage process and was better than that of the venous RBCs and 2-week-old packed RBCs. At the end of storage, the oxygen transport function of salvaged RBCs did not change obviously, but percentage of hemolysis significantly increased

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe
