How to Use Crowdfunding in Extension: A Relationship Education Example

    Get PDF
Crowdfunding is a resource that allows individuals or groups to raise funds while simultaneously engaging relevant communities and, thus, is an important tool for Extension specialists. We provide recommended steps for successful crowdfunding, including tips for identifying a website, developing or refining a proposal, and crafting a marketing and campaign strategy. We use the successful crowdfunding of a relationship education program as an example

The impact of premarital cycling on early marriage

    Get PDF
Using a sample of 564 newlywed couples and the enduring dynamics model of marriage (Caughlin, Huston, & Houts, 2000), we examined the impact of premarital cycling (breaking up and renewing) on the entrance into marriage and relationship dynamics over the first five years. Consistent with the enduring dynamics model, results demonstrated cyclical couples (compared to non-cyclical couples) exhibited worse adjustment on a variety of relationship indicators at the entrance to marriage and were more likely to experience a trial separation over the first five years. Dyadic parallel process growth curve analysis further revealed that premarital cycling predicted lower initial relationship satisfaction that was sustained over the first five years of marriage. Implications for theory, research, and intervention with premarital couples are discussed. These results provide evidence that courtships characterized by breakups and renewals represent a relational vulnerability with negative implications extending years into the future

Ecoimmunology and Demography of Recruitment in Swainson’s Hawks

    Get PDF
Swainson’s Hawks are a long-lived migratory species that breed throughout North America. Swainson’s Hawks frequently forage and nest in modified-agriculture landscapes, which often support large prey abundances. Breeding surveys across the state of California estimated a 91% decline in the number of breeding pairs in 1979, prompting a listing-status of “threatened” in 1983. A long-term monitoring project for the species was developed in Butte Valley, California in association with this state-wide survey and has run continuously from 1979 to the present. Examination of this long-term breeding and reproductive data shows a continuum of territory occupancy and productivity values. This heterogeneity becomes especially apparent when examining differences between individual territories. I explored the differences between territories and its role on natal conditions using immune system development as a framework. The hypothesis being that nestlings benefitting from favorable conditions are able to invest in stronger immune systems. Mixed effects analyses indicated a significant link between extended territory occupancy history, an index of habitat quality, and stronger immune systems in nestlings in 2013 but not in 2015. I also examined long-term trends in population size across the last three decades. I used multi-state models to test hypotheses involving trends in recruitment rates and to estimate first-year survival. Models that accounted for the permanent ban of “monocrotophos” pesticide use across the wintering range received the most support. Indicating that the disuse of this pesticide in 2000, was particularly important for this species. This result emphasizes the necessity and value of conservation work

“It’s complicated:” the continuity and correlates of cycling in cohabiting and marital relationships

    Get PDF
Given previous research on the risks associated with cycling in young adult dating relationships, the present study examines the frequency with which cyclical dating relationships (relationships that end and renew) persist into cohabitation and marriage, the characteristics of these relationships, and the constraints associated with cycling during these stages using a nationally representative sample of cohabiting (n = 323) and married (n = 752) couples. Using retrospective accounts, results suggest that over one-third of cohabiters and one-fifth of spouses have experienced a breakup and renewal in their current relationship. Additionally, partners who have experienced cycling are at greater risk for further cycling and experiencing greater constraints to permanently ending the relationship, greater uncertainty in their relationship’s future, and lower satisfaction

Undergraduate Public Scholarship: Blogs and Infographics Replacing Quizzes and Presentations

    No full text
The focus of this presentation is on ways to adjust assignments for online and in-person courses to include public scholarship. They describe the challenges and successes experienced adapting assignments in an online and in-person section of an upper level Human Development and Family Studies undergraduate course. How to help students think about the ways that knowledge is communicated to target audiences and to assess needs in order to provide information most likely to be helpful. Specifically, they demonstrate student learning through blogging, infographics, and social media posting. Inclusion of public-facing assignments allows students to exhibit that they are familiar with course materials, able to teach the materials to others, and dialog on topics that matter to them
