Will You Look Me in the Eye? The Embrace and Denial of Human Dignity on Marquette Campus

With a foundation in Levinas\u27 pseudo-ethical philosophy of the Phenomena of the Face, this project provided a definition of human dignity and considered whether or not the Marquette University community practices a common respect for human dignity in everyday interactions on the streets of Marquette campus -- focusing in on Wisconsin Avenue due to its constant traffic of both Marquette University students and faculty and Milwaukee community members. This project observed typical day to day interactions that occur while walking around Marquette University\u27s campus with a specific emphasis on how people affiliated with Marquette University react to other Marquette community members as well as members of the Milwaukee community on campus. Ultimately, the research sought to consider the level of awareness Marquette affiliates have upon the subject of human dignity and calls for we as a university to raise awareness about the necessity and nuances of human dignity in everyday interactions.https://epublications.marquette.edu/english_3210ur/1019/thumbnail.jp

Investigations in Geometry— A Hands-On Course for Grades 6-8 Pre-Service Teachers

This paper describes a geometry course at Virginia Commonwealth University for pre-scrvicc middle school teachers that features hands-on activities, group collaboration, and technology. Details of the topics and activities covered in this course are provided. Feedback from the first group of students to complete the course was gathered throughout the semester and student responses to the class format and topics are also discussed

The impediments to the change to UK university accounting education, a comparison to the USA pathways commission

There is much debate in the literature concerning the changes necessary for university accounting education to meet the needs of the business environment and broader society. In the USA the Pathways Commission has responded by implementing a programme of evaluation and improvement. In the UK there is no formal agenda for change. This paper compares the situation in the UK to that set out in the Pathways Commission. Two research questions are asked. (1) What should be included in a programme of change in the UK? (2) What are the impediments to the change? The questions are answered by reviewing the literature to firstly consolidate the calls for change and secondly to analyse the circumstances affecting UK accounting degrees. The paper calls on the accountancy profession, universities and academics in the UK to embark on a programme of change similar to the USA to agree a core curriculum, an appropriate academic resourcing strategy and a revised pedagogy. It argues that for significant and lasting change to emerge impediments in three areas need to be addressed. (1) The interface between professional accountancy bodies (PABs) and university academics. (2) The impact of institutional policies on accounting degrees. (3) The identity of UK university accounting academics

Financial Market Illiquidity Shocks and Macroeconomic Dynamics: Evidence from the UK

We examine the link between financial market illiquidity and macroeconomic dynamics by fitting a Bayesian time-varying parameter VAR with stochastic volatility to UK data from 1988Q1 to 2016Q4. We capture liquidity conditions in the stock market using a battery of illiquidity proxies. This paper departs from previous studies examining macro-financial linkages by using theoretically grounded sign restrictions, and conducting structural inference in a non-linear framework. We document both statistically significant differences in the transmission of these shocks, and substantial increases in the economic importance of these shocks during the 2008 recession

Aminata Sow Fall, one of the earliest women writers from Senegal, has been acknowledged as an analyst of contemporary social mores, exposing aspects of moderm African society where social, political and economic changes have resulted in the debasement of public and private customs and behavior. There has been a curious silence, however, from feminist critics, who have largely side-stepped her work, which now numbers four novels: Le Revenant (1976), La Greve des Battu (The Beggars\u27 Strike) (1979), L\u27Appel des Arenes (1982) and L\u27Ex-Pere de la Nation (1987)
