    Assessments of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) at Soddo and Kedidagamila districts of southern Ethiopia

    Assessments of Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) and Alfalfas (Medicago sativa) was carried out on 36 farmers fields in soddo and kedidagamila districts of Southern Ethiopia during 2010/2011 cropping season in order to test the adaptability of grass and legume forages, create awareness to the farmers and evaluate the yield performance of the technologies by farmers evaluation criteria. The range and mean performance of annual grass and legume forages have showed considerable amount of variability among the traits. For instance, fresh biomass yield of rhodes grass varied from 31.9-98.0 and 27.8-39.3 tones/ha for soddo and Kedidagamila districts respectively. The plant height and number of branch/plant of rhodes grass also varied from 128.9-172.9cm and 4.0-16.0 for soddo and 110.8- 129.5 cm and 7.0-16.0 for Kedidagamila. Moreover, the fresh biomass yield of alfalfa in soddo is varied from 21.9-44.1 and 22.1-34.30 t/ha and dry matter 8.26-23.26 and 10.6-17.6 t/ha for soddo and Kedidagamila districts respectively. Based on farmers evaluation, both alfalfa and Rhodes grass are the most vigorous, persistent and highly adapted species, and thus can be safely suggested for the soddo district. Furthermore, the growth performance of Rhodes grass in kedidagamila also good but, productivity of alfalfa was poor and this probably resulting from unfavorable climatic conditions. The over all mean of the result, 90.26% and 69.43% of soddo farmers were selected rhodes grass and alfalfa. In kedidagamila, 88.88 % of the farmers were preferred Rhodes grass over 40.25 % of alfalfa. Key words: Assessments, adaptation,  Evaluation Medicago sativa, Chloris gayan

    Women in Home garden Agro forestry system of Sidama, SNNPRS, Ethiopia

    Abstract 7 April, 2015 The study was carried in dry rain fed food crop and irrigated cash crop producing areas in Sidama, SNNPR Ethiopia. Data was collected by using structural questioners from ninety households. In addition to interview a group discussion and farming system observation had been carried to check the respondents answer realty in the areas. The objectives of study are to identify the roles of women's in management and utilization of home garden agroforestry in Southern Ethiopia. Study reveal that women were conserving a variety of fruits, vegetable, medicinal plants and spices in their home gardens. The 90% of crop and 10% tree species were preferred by women to be cultivated within home gardens. There also finds that women have a responsible for subsistence economies and accepted for their contribution of labor within the families. The collection of fuel wood, food and water for household need are the responsibility of women. They contribute 51 % of labor for their households. The crop produced for food was managed by women, where as the crop produced for cash were managed by both men and women. The control of resource has also depended up on the crop grown. The role of women in control of low cash crop and mostly food crops for their household consumption. There also women control animal product like milk and butter. Women income indirectly related with control 25 to 40 percentages of home garden resources in cash crop and food crop areas respectively. The overall incomes of household are directly related with women income and statically significant at 0.05%. Thus, Women's in Boricha district specially are among the poorest people and most vulnerable to the harmful impact of climate. In general, the rural women are highly dependent on natural resource for the livelihood of their families. How well these natural resources are managed determines the quality of life of the people and the sustainability of the production system

    Preliminary Review of Spine Tumor Radiologic, Intra-Operative and Histopathology Findings, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

    BACKGROUND: Spinal tumors constitute 10-32% of all primary central nervous system tumors. Accurate radiologic and histopathology diagnosis is crucial in the management and prognosis. The aim of the study was to describe the imaging patterns and to determine the agreement of imaging pattern of spinal tumors with intra-operative and histopathology findings. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study of 47 patients with spinal tumor done from May 2018 to October 2020. Medical records were reviewed for clinical data, history, physical examination, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), intraoperative findings and histopathology reports. The agreement between imaging, intraoperative finding and histopathology diagnosis was analyzed. RESULTS: Intradural extramedullary tumors constituted 37 (78%) cases followed by six (12.8 %) extradural tumors and four (9.2%) intramedullary tumors. Schwannoma accounted for 13 (27.7%) cases followed by meningioma, 12 (25.5%) cases. Twenty-seven (57.4%) cases were thoracic level and cervical level were nine (19.1%) cases. Twelve (25.5%) cases did not have a definite intraoperative diagnosis. Imaging and intraoperative diagnosis was in agreement in 21 (44.6 %) cases and disagreed in 14 (29.7%) cases. For the imaging diagnosis and histopathology, 29 (61.7%) were in agreement and 18 (38.3 %) were in disagreement. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the commonest site to be involved was the thoracic spine and schwannoma was the commonest tumor. The low agreement between imaging and histopathology could have been improved by optimizing the imaging reports and techniques

    Neisseria gonorrhea in Ethiopia, prevalence among STI suspected patients and its antimicrobial susceptibility: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    IntroductionNeisseria gonorrhea (N. gonorrhea) represents a significant causative agent of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), posing considerable global health challenges. Despite the presence of diagnostic tools and empirically guided therapies, the escalating AMR of N. gonorrhea continues to pose a threat. This study aims to assess the prevalence of N. gonorrhea among STI suspected patients in Ethiopia and explore the patterns of AMR to common antimicrobials.MethodsFollowing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. A thorough search of electronic databases from July 11 to July 24, 2023, identified 10 eligible studies. Data were extracted and analyzed using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic, and publication bias was evaluated through Egger’s regression test and funnel plots.ResultsThe overall pooled prevalence of N. gonorrhea among STI suspected patients in Ethiopia was 20% (95% confidence interval (CI): 8–30, I2 = 99.0%; p-value <0.001). Substantial regional variations were observed, with the highest prevalence in Addis Ababa (55, 95% CI: 45–65) and the lowest in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR) (4, 95% CI: 2–8). The pooled prevalence of AMR to ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, azithromycin, benzylpenicillin, tetracycline, and spectinomycin was 37, 9, 10, 79, 93, and 2%, respectively. Significant heterogeneity existed between studies (I2 = 99.0%; p value <0.001). Publication bias, identified through funnel plot examination and Egger’s regression test (p < 0.001), execution of trim and fill analysis resulted in an adjusted pooled prevalence of (6.2, 95% CI: −6.8 to 19.3).ConclusionThe prevalence of N. gonorrhea among STI suspected patients in Ethiopia is alarming, particularly in specific regions. The elevated AMR to ciprofloxacin underscores the immediate need for alternative treatment options and enhanced surveillance systems. Future initiatives should prioritize strengthening laboratory capacities and implementing targeted interventions to curtail N. gonorrhea transmission and prevent the emergence of AMR.Systematic Review Registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero, identifier CRD42023459698

    The burden of severe asthma in sub-Saharan Africa : findings from the African Severe Asthma Project

    Funding: Funded by a project grant from the GSK Africa Non-communicable Disease Open Lab (project 8019).Background Severe asthma is associated with high morbidity, mortality and health care utilization but its burden in Africa is unknown. Objective To determine the burden (prevalence, mortality and activity and work impairment) of severe asthma in three Easter Africa countries (Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia). Methods Using the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society (ATS/ERS) case definition of severe asthma we analyzed for the prevalence of severe asthma (requiring GINA steps 4–5 asthma medications for the previous year to achieve control) and severe refractory asthma (remains uncontrolled despite treatment with GINA steps 4–5 asthma medications) in a cohort of 1086 asthma patients who had been in care for 12 months and had received all GINA recommended medications. Asthma control was assessed using the asthma control questionnaire (ACQ). Results Overall, the prevalence of severe asthma and severe refractory asthma was 25.6% (95% CI 23.1–28.3) and 4.6% (95% CI 3.5–6.0) respectively. Patients with severe asthma were (non- severe vs. severe vs. severe refractory) older (39, 42, 45 years, p=0.011), had high skin prick test reactivity (67.1%, 76.0%, 76.0%, p=0.004), had lower FEV1% (81%, 61%, 55.5%, p=<0.001), lower quality of life score (129, 127 vs 121, p=<0.001) and higher activity impairment (10%, 30%, 50%, p=<0.001). Conclusion The prevalence of severe asthma in Africa is high and is associated with high morbidity and poor quality of life.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Global, regional, and national cancer incidence, mortality, years of life lost, years lived with disability, and disability-Adjusted life-years for 29 cancer groups, 1990 to 2017 : A systematic analysis for the global burden of disease study

    Importance: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemiology. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study is uniquely poised to provide these crucial data. Objective: To describe cancer burden for 29 cancer groups in 195 countries from 1990 through 2017 to provide data needed for cancer control planning. Evidence Review: We used the GBD study estimation methods to describe cancer incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-Adjusted life-years (DALYs). Results are presented at the national level as well as by Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income, educational attainment, and total fertility rate. We also analyzed the influence of the epidemiological vs the demographic transition on cancer incidence. Findings: In 2017, there were 24.5 million incident cancer cases worldwide (16.8 million without nonmelanoma skin cancer [NMSC]) and 9.6 million cancer deaths. The majority of cancer DALYs came from years of life lost (97%), and only 3% came from years lived with disability. The odds of developing cancer were the lowest in the low SDI quintile (1 in 7) and the highest in the high SDI quintile (1 in 2) for both sexes. In 2017, the most common incident cancers in men were NMSC (4.3 million incident cases); tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer (1.5 million incident cases); and prostate cancer (1.3 million incident cases). The most common causes of cancer deaths and DALYs for men were TBL cancer (1.3 million deaths and 28.4 million DALYs), liver cancer (572000 deaths and 15.2 million DALYs), and stomach cancer (542000 deaths and 12.2 million DALYs). For women in 2017, the most common incident cancers were NMSC (3.3 million incident cases), breast cancer (1.9 million incident cases), and colorectal cancer (819000 incident cases). The leading causes of cancer deaths and DALYs for women were breast cancer (601000 deaths and 17.4 million DALYs), TBL cancer (596000 deaths and 12.6 million DALYs), and colorectal cancer (414000 deaths and 8.3 million DALYs). Conclusions and Relevance: The national epidemiological profiles of cancer burden in the GBD study show large heterogeneities, which are a reflection of different exposures to risk factors, economic settings, lifestyles, and access to care and screening. The GBD study can be used by policy makers and other stakeholders to develop and improve national and local cancer control in order to achieve the global targets and improve equity in cancer care. © 2019 American Medical Association.     Population and fertility by age and sex for 195 countries and territories, 1950–2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

    Background: Population estimates underpin demographic and epidemiological research and are used to track progress on numerous international indicators of health and development. To date, internationally available estimates of population and fertility, although useful, have not been produced with transparent and replicable methods and do not use standardised estimates of mortality. We present single-calendar year and single-year of age estimates of fertility and population by sex with standardised and replicable methods. Methods: We estimated population in 195 locations by single year of age and single calendar year from 1950 to 2017 with standardised and replicable methods. We based the estimates on the demographic balancing equation, with inputs of fertility, mortality, population, and migration data. Fertility data came from 7817 location-years of vital registration data, 429 surveys reporting complete birth histories, and 977 surveys and censuses reporting summary birth histories. We estimated age-specific fertility rates (ASFRs; the annual number of livebirths to women of a specified age group per 1000 women in that age group) by use of spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression and used the ASFRs to estimate total fertility rates (TFRs; the average number of children a woman would bear if she survived through the end of the reproductive age span [age 10–54 years] and experienced at each age a particular set of ASFRs observed in the year of interest). Because of sparse data, fertility at ages 10–14 years and 50–54 years was estimated from data on fertility in women aged 15–19 years and 45–49 years, through use of linear regression. Age-specific mortality data came from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 estimates. Data on population came from 1257 censuses and 761 population registry location-years and were adjusted for underenumeration and age misreporting with standard demographic methods. Migration was estimated with the GBD Bayesian demographic balancing model, after incorporating information about refugee migration into the model prior. Final population estimates used the cohort-component method of population projection, with inputs of fertility, mortality, and migration data. Population uncertainty was estimated by use of out-of-sample predictive validity testing. With these data, we estimated the trends in population by age and sex and in fertility by age between 1950 and 2017 in 195 countries and territories. Findings: From 1950 to 2017, TFRs decreased by 49\ub74% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 46\ub74–52\ub70). The TFR decreased from 4\ub77 livebirths (4\ub75–4\ub79) to 2\ub74 livebirths (2\ub72–2\ub75), and the ASFR of mothers aged 10–19 years decreased from 37 livebirths (34–40) to 22 livebirths (19–24) per 1000 women. Despite reductions in the TFR, the global population has been increasing by an average of 83\ub78 million people per year since 1985. The global population increased by 197\ub72% (193\ub73–200\ub78) since 1950, from 2\ub76 billion (2\ub75–2\ub76) to 7\ub76 billion (7\ub74–7\ub79) people in 2017; much of this increase was in the proportion of the global population in south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The global annual rate of population growth increased between 1950 and 1964, when it peaked at 2\ub70%; this rate then remained nearly constant until 1970 and then decreased to 1\ub71% in 2017. Population growth rates in the southeast Asia, east Asia, and Oceania GBD super-region decreased from 2\ub75% in 1963 to 0\ub77% in 2017, whereas in sub-Saharan Africa, population growth rates were almost at the highest reported levels ever in 2017, when they were at 2\ub77%. The global average age increased from 26\ub76 years in 1950 to 32\ub71 years in 2017, and the proportion of the population that is of working age (age 15–64 years) increased from 59\ub79% to 65\ub73%. At the national level, the TFR decreased in all countries and territories between 1950 and 2017; in 2017, TFRs ranged from a low of 1\ub70 livebirths (95% UI 0\ub79–1\ub72) in Cyprus to a high of 7\ub71 livebirths (6\ub78–7\ub74) in Niger. The TFR under age 25 years (TFU25; number of livebirths expected by age 25 years for a hypothetical woman who survived the age group and was exposed to current ASFRs) in 2017 ranged from 0\ub708 livebirths (0\ub707–0\ub709) in South Korea to 2\ub74 livebirths (2\ub72–2\ub76) in Niger, and the TFR over age 30 years (TFO30; number of livebirths expected for a hypothetical woman ageing from 30 to 54 years who survived the age group and was exposed to current ASFRs) ranged from a low of 0\ub73 livebirths (0\ub73–0\ub74) in Puerto Rico to a high of 3\ub71 livebirths (3\ub70–3\ub72) in Niger. TFO30 was higher than TFU25 in 145 countries and territories in 2017. 33 countries had a negative population growth rate from 2010 to 2017, most of which were located in central, eastern, and western Europe, whereas population growth rates of more than 2\ub70% were seen in 33 of 46 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2017, less than 65% of the national population was of working age in 12 of 34 high-income countries, and less than 50% of the national population was of working age in Mali, Chad, and Niger. Interpretation: Population trends create demographic dividends and headwinds (ie, economic benefits and detriments) that affect national economies and determine national planning needs. Although TFRs are decreasing, the global population continues to grow as mortality declines, with diverse patterns at the national level and across age groups. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide transparent and replicable estimates of population and fertility, which can be used to inform decision making and to monitor progress.     Mapping local patterns of childhood overweight and wasting in low- and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2017

    A double burden of malnutrition occurs when individuals, household members or communities experience both undernutrition and overweight. Here, we show geospatial estimates of overweight and wasting prevalence among children under 5 years of age in 105 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) from 2000 to 2017 and aggregate these to policy-relevant administrative units. Wasting decreased overall across LMICs between 2000 and 2017, from 8.4% (62.3 (55.1–70.8) million) to 6.4% (58.3 (47.6–70.7) million), but is predicted to remain above the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target of <5% in over half of LMICs by 2025. Prevalence of overweight increased from 5.2% (30 (22.8–38.5) million) in 2000 to 6.0% (55.5 (44.8–67.9) million) children aged under 5 years in 2017. Areas most affected by double burden of malnutrition were located in Indonesia, Thailand, southeastern China, Botswana, Cameroon and central Nigeria. Our estimates provide a new perspective to researchers, policy makers and public health agencies in their efforts to address this global childhood syndemic
