    Over the hills and far away... : a study of the 95th Rifles : their background, discipline, doctrine, and combat employment during the defense of Portugal, 1810-1811

    The first chapter of this study of the 95th examines the long struggle through the eighteenth century to create an adequately trained and equipped corps of riflemen in the British Army, culminating in the creation of the Experimental Rifle Corps in 1800. Experiences in North America, the West Indies and Europe that bear relevance will be examined along with those individuals whose experience or works influenced the creation of the 95th. The second chapter investigates the organization and new discipline of the Experimental Rifle Corps, its drafting into the line as the 95th, Sir John Moore\u27s camp at Shorncliffe and his system of training. Chapter three examines the doctrine of the riflemen, how they were to be employed as protection for the army on the move, while in camp and in battle. The final chapter covers the actual experience of the 95th in the Peninsular, examining the defense of Portugal from the close of the Talavera campaign of 1809 to the opening of the Fuentes de Onoro campaign of 1811. Close attention is paid to operations along the Coa in the spring and summer of 1810. Here the 95th operated along with the rest of the Light Division as outposts for the entire British Army, never once allowing the French to break through their line, or passing on inaccurate information to Sir Arthur Wellesley. It is therefore a study of the tactics of a single regiment and its influence on the course of a series of campaigns

    Physical Activity during Full-Day and Half-Day Kindergarten

    The aim of this study was to compare the physical activity levels of children during fullday and half-day kindergarten. Of the 47 children who participated in this study, 22 (girls = 50%) attended full-day kindergarten and 25 (girls = 40%) attended half-days. Actigraph activity monitors were used to assess physical activity and sedentary behavior of the children. We found that children were more active during full-day kindergarten. The rates of light-intensity physical activity were significantly higher during full-day kindergarten. However, levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were quite low, and efforts to promote MVPA would be beneficial

    Case study of a performance-active changing trans* male singing voice

    A professional classical singer of more than 25 years (AZ) in his early 50s requested this voice researcher’s consultation and assistance in early 2014. He was about to start living full time as a trans* man. Despite his intention to be included in the low start/gradual increase testosterone option of the Trans* Male (previously, β€œFTM”) Singing Voice Program, the request contained a rather unconventional aspect: AZ would continue to sing while his voice was changing. The above request was integral with his singing history. After the introduction of safeguards and his informed consent, AZ was accepted onto the Program. Due to the highly individual circumstances, his participation was recorded as a case study. The study has aimed to replicate the particulars of the slow hormonal changes and continuing singing ability found in certain cisgender male adolescent voices. Despite dealing with an adult trans* male individual, the progress has been comparable. This has been achieved by carefully monitoring AZ’s low start/gradual increase testosterone administration in communication with the medical practitioner. The participant’s vocal health remained safeguarded and promoted by carefully individualized vocal tuition. This article will discuss the collective results of the case study, including the recordings and the data analysis

    60Β°N was +2.0Β°C, relative to the 1981–2010 average value (Fig. 5.1). This marks a new high for the record. The average annual surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly for 2016 for land stations north of starting in 1900, and is a significant increase over the previous highest value of +1.2Β°C, which was observed in 2007, 2011, and 2015. Average global annual temperatures also showed record values in 2015 and 2016. Currently, the Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of lower latitudes

    Reinforcement selection acting on the European house mouse hybrid zone

    Behavioural isolation may lead to complete speciation when partial postzygotic isolation acts in the presence of divergent‐specific mate‐recognition systems. These conditions exist where Mus musculus musculus and M.Β m.Β domesticus come into contact and hybridize. We studied two mate‐recognition signal systems, based on urinary and salivary proteins, across a Central European portion of the mouse hybrid zone. Introgression of the genomic regions responsible for these signals: the major urinary proteins (MUPs) and androgen binding proteins (ABPs), respectively, was compared to introgression at loci assumed to be nearly neutral and those under selection against hybridization. The preference of individuals taken from across the zone regarding these signals was measured in Y mazes, and we develop a model for the analysis of the transition of such traits under reinforcement selection. The strongest assortative preferences were found in males for urine and females for ABP. Clinal analyses confirm nearly neutral introgression of an Abp locus and two loci closely linked to the Abp gene cluster, whereas two markers flanking the Mup gene region reveal unexpected introgression. Geographic change in the preference traits matches our reinforcement selection model significantly better than standard cline models.     Depression and Sexual Orientation During Young Adulthood: Diversity Among Sexual Minority Subgroups and the Role of Gender Nonconformity.

    Sexual minority individuals are at an elevated risk for depression compared to their heterosexual counterparts, yet less is known about how depression status varies across sexual minority subgroups (i.e., mostly heterosexuals, bisexuals, and lesbians and gay men). Moreover, studies on the role of young adult gender nonconformity in the relation between sexual orientation and depression are scarce and have yielded mixed findings. The current study examined the disparities between sexual minorities and heterosexuals during young adulthood in concurrent depression near the beginning of young adulthood and prospective depression 6 years later, paying attention to the diversity within sexual minority subgroups and the role of gender nonconformity. Drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N = 9421), we found that after accounting for demographics, sampling weight, and sampling design, self-identified mostly heterosexual and bisexual young adults, but not lesbians and gay men, reported significantly higher concurrent depression compared to heterosexuals; moreover, only mostly heterosexual young adults were more depressed than heterosexuals 6 years later. Furthermore, while young adult gender nonconforming behavior was associated with more concurrent depression regardless of sexual orientation, its negative impact on mental health decreased over time. Surprisingly, previous gender nonconformity predicted decreased prospective depression among lesbians and gay men whereas, among heterosexual individuals, increased gender nonconformity was not associated with prospective depression. This key function has two consequences: (i) these receptor channels are major targets for drug discovery because of their potential involvement in numerous human brain diseases; (ii) they are often found to be the target of plant and animal toxins.
