Positioning And Design Recommendations For Materials Of Efficient Thermal Storage Mass In Passive Buildings

    Get PDF
The role of mass in energy storage has long been a subject of interest in passive buildings. Thermal mass is used to diminish temperature variations for interior spaces in desert or semi- desert climates. Energy from solar and internal gains during the day in winter is often greater than daytime heating requirements. This energy can be stored in materials within the building, and released at night to offset building heat loss. In a similar manner, building mass may allow the interior to remain cooler during the daytime in summer and reduce air conditioning requirements. In this paper, the geometric and energetic positioning of thermal mass has been studied in order to determine most convenient locations. It is found that floors receive direct solar energy for a high percentage of time, usually 70%-90% of the radiation transmitted through the window during the day (9 am to 3 pm solar time). The materials related to the technical efficiency of thermal mass are reviewed specifying the thickness most suitable for storing solar heat in the winter or keeping the interior cool in summer.Fil: Esteves, Alfredo. Improving Staff Knowledge and Competence in the Use of mHealth in Weight Loss Management.

Obesity is a complex and multifactorial public health issue. The prevalence of obesity in the world has increased significantly in the past four decades, and in the United States alone more than 90 million people are affected. It is associated with chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, sleep apnea, and certain cancers. Obesity is responsible for high expenses not only in healthcare, but in society as well. Obesity management requires a multifaceted approach to reduce weight and improve health outcomes. There is a need for a cost-effective treatment of obesity that helps improve quality of life, provides patient centered care, and offers a long-term solution. Mobile health is an effective tool that assists with promotion of behavioral changes while increasing patient provider interaction and access to information. The purpose of this project was to improve knowledge in the use of mobile health and perceived competence of using this technology for weight management. A total of 10 adults who are part of the staff of a medical bariatric office participated in a quality improvement project. Participants were evaluated in their knowledge of mHealth and perceived competence to use it in weight management. Participants completed a demographic survey and a pre- and post-intervention survey. Statistical analysis was performed using a Mann Whitney U test. Upon completion of statistical analysis, a significant improvement in test scores from pre-intervention to post-intervention surveys were found. Results of this quality improvement project can be used to increase knowledge and perceived competence in the use of mHealth in providers for further implementation of a clinical practice change in weight management program

REGRAS E ORDEM DO MERCADO NAS VISÕES DE ADAM SMITH E F. A. HAYEK

The main objective of this article is to recover, from a critical-philosophical point of view, the central importance of the rules to construct an explanation of the market social order in Adam Smith's and F.A. Hayek's perspectives. We start from a point of view that considers a unifying approach of Adam Smith's work giving to the moral rules the status of co-participative, side by side with the invisible hand, on the objective of viabilyzing the social order of the market. In Hayek's work we stress the smithian heritage regarding the market as spontaneous social order and we develop an argument affirming that the rules, although open space to construct a dialog with the heterodox approach, can be used as basis to his theory of self-development of the market, or the idea of the market as the only path to organize the contemporaneous society.

An examination of the attachment process from childhood to romantic relationships among young adults raised in long-term and adoptive foster care

This is a qualitative study that seeks to examine the foster care experience through the narratives of fifteen participants. This study specifically examines how foster care and family disruptions impact a young adult\u27s ability to form and establish meaningful and trusting romantic relationships. The data were collected from interviews of young adults raised in long-term foster care and adoptive foster care placements. As I set out to explore the foster care experience, I noted the recurring themes that resonated from interviews with the participants. Participants\u27 experiences and understandings of attachment are reflected in my findings.;Many researchers, such as John Bowlby, have long argued that the attachments that infants form or fail to form with their caregivers have life long implications for future relationships. But attachment researchers have overlooked the institution of foster care and the ways it shapes children\u27s lives. This study examines lifelong attachment processes and examines the attachment process of young adults raised in foster care and adoptive foster placements. Specifically, this study examines how romantic relationships are viewed, established, and often avoided by young adults raised in foster care

Effects of NFκB activation on KSHV latency and lytic reactivation are complex and context-dependent

AbstractLike all herpesviruses, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) can produce either latent or lytic infection. The latent v-FLIP gene is a strong activator of NFκB, and in primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) cells, blockade of NFκB activation is associated with enhanced lytic gene expression, while overexpression of p65 impairs expression of reporter genes driven by lytic promoters. This has led to the suggestion that NFκB activation may promote latency by suppressing lytic reactivation. Here we examine in detail the effects of NFκB activation on KSHV replication in several cell types. In accord with earlier work, we find that inhibition of NFκB signaling in PEL cells is associated with enhanced lytic reactivation of KSHV. Similarly, in de novo KSHV infection of primary endothelial cells, inhibition of NFκB signaling leads to an increase in lytic gene expression and enhanced virion production. By contrast, KSHV-infected human foreskin fibroblasts (HFF) show no increase in spontaneous lytic reactivation when NFκB is inhibited. Moreover, if NFκB activation is always inhibitory to lytic gene expression, one might expect its activation to be suppressed during the lytic cycle. However, we find that NFκB signaling is strongly and consistently activated in lytically infected cells of all lineages. Together these data indicate that (i) the relationship of NFκB activation to latency and lytic reactivation is not uniform, but is dependent on the cellular context; and (ii) even though NFκB activation is inhibitory to lytic gene expression in some contexts, such inhibition is at least partially bypassed or overridden during lytic growth
