    Equity theory based strategies for students on overcoming problems in Ph.D. dissertation committees

    There exists a critical relationship between the professor chairing the Ph.D. dissertation committees and his or her Ph.D. students. When problems arise in a Ph.D. program, issues of fairness based on fundamental principles in equity theory can guide both the professor chairing dissertation committees and the student to a just resolution. This paper proposes equity theory as a guiding aid in Ph.D. program problem resolution. To further illustrate equity theory considerations, a series of actual case applications are presented as suggestions for potential strategies in dealing with problems in Ph.D. dissertation committees. We conclude with recommendations both for Ph.D. students and new or veteran dissertation committee members

    Diffusion of innovation: customer relationship management adoption in supply chain organizations

    The successful diffusion of innovations in rapidly changing supply chain technological environments is essential to support operations and supply chain management functions. In this paper we conceptualize and develop a framework for research into the diffusion of innovations in organizations pertaining to software adoption in supply chain management. Incorporating Task-Technology Fit theory with a network externalities model, we develop a novel approach in customer relations management (CRM) software adoption. An empirical study using Partial Least Squares (PLS) on data from US supply chain managers is utilized to confirm the usability of the proposed framework as well as confirming the efficacy of the proposed combined methodological approach suggested in this paper. The results also show the direct and indirect network externalities of system quality, ease of use, system reliability, and authority can moderate the CRM adoption relationship in organizations, suggesting the possibility that other moderating network externality variables may impact CRM adoption

    A Multi-Criteria Model for Corporate Property Evaluation

    A critical concern for corporations pursuing geographical expansion strategies involves property evaluation. In order for expansion to be successful, corporations must identify cities and properties that offer a good fit with the firm's corporate strategy. Unfortunately, little has been written to aid corporations in making complex property selection decisions. This paper presents a model that combines the concepts of strategic management, the management science technique of goal programming, and micro computer technology to provide managers with a more effective and efficient method for evaluation property and making selection decisions.

    Confidence and Backaction in the Quantum Filter Equation

    We study the confidence and backaction of state reconstruction based on a continuous weak measurement and the quantum filter equation. As a physical example we use the traditional model of a double quantum dot being continuously monitored by a quantum point contact. We examine the confidence of the estimate of a state constructed from the measurement record, and the effect of backaction of that measurement on that state. Finally, in the case of general measurements we show that using the relative entropy as a measure of confidence allows us to define the lower bound on the confidence as a type of quantum discord.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    The Pseudomonas aeruginosa Transcriptional Landscape Is Shaped by Environmental Heterogeneity and Genetic Variation

    Phenotypic variability among bacteria depends on gene expression in response to different environments, and it also reflects differences in genomic structure. In this study, we analyzed transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) profiles of 151 Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates under standard laboratory conditions and of one P. aeruginosa type strain under 14 different environmental conditions. Our approach allowed dissection of the impact of the genetic background versus environmental cues on P. aeruginosa gene expression profiles and revealed that phenotypic variation was larger in response to changing environments than between genomically different isolates. We demonstrate that mutations within the global regulator LasR affect more than one trait (pleiotropy) and that the interaction between mutations (epistasis) shapes the P. aeruginosa phenotypic plasticity landscape. Because of pleiotropic and epistatic effects, average genotype and phenotype measures appeared to be uncorrelated in P. aeruginosa

    Operational Research (OR) techniques have been applied, from the early stages of the discipline, to a wide variety of issues in education. At the government level, these include questions of what resources should be allocated to education as a whole and how these should be divided amongst the individual sectors of education and the institutions within the sectors. Another pertinent issue concerns the efficient operation of institutions, how to measure it, and whether resource allocation can be used to incentivise efficiency savings. Local governments, as well as being concerned with issues of resource allocation, may also need to make decisions regarding, for example, the creation and location of new institutions or closure of existing ones, as well as the day-to-day logistics of getting pupils to schools. Issues of concern for managers within schools and colleges include allocating the budgets, scheduling lessons and the assignment of students to courses. This survey provides an overview of the diverse problems faced by government, managers and consumers of education, and the OR techniques which have typically been applied in an effort to improve operations and provide solutions
