    Parameter estimation in spatially extended systems: The Karhunen-Loeve and Galerkin multiple shooting approach

    Parameter estimation for spatiotemporal dynamics for coupled map lattices and continuous time domain systems is shown using a combination of multiple shooting, Karhunen-Loeve decomposition and Galerkin's projection methodologies. The resulting advantages in estimating parameters have been studied and discussed for chaotic and turbulent dynamics using small amounts of data from subsystems, availability of only scalar and noisy time series data, effects of space-time parameter variations, and in the presence of multiple time-scales.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 4 Tables Corresponding Author - V.     Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    Synthesis, growth, and structural, optical, mechanical, electrical properties of a new inorganic nonlinear optical crystal: Sodium manganese tetrachloride (SMTC)

    A new inorganic nonlinear optical single crystal of sodium manganese tetrachloride (SMTC) has been successfully grown from aqueous solution using the slow evaporation technique at room temperature. The crystals obtained using the aforementioned method were characterized using different techniques. The crystalline nature of the as-grown crystal of SMTC was analyzed using powder X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the crystal belongs to an orthorhombic system with non-centrosymmetric space group Pbam. The optical transmission study of the SMTC crystal revealed high transmittance in the entire UV–vis region, and the lower cut-off wavelength was determined to be 240 nm. The mechanical strength of the as-grown crystal was estimated using the Vickers microhardness test. The second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of the crystal was measured using Kurtz's powder technique, which indicated that the crystal has a nonlinear optical (NLO) efficiency that is 1.32 times greater than that of KDP. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the compound were measured at different temperatures with varying frequencies. The photoconductivity study confirmed that the title compound possesses a negative photoconducting nature.     A comparative analysis of friction stir and tungsten inert gas dissimilar AA5082-AA7075 butt welds

    The aluminium alloys AA5082 and AA7075 were welded using friction stir welding (FSW) and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. The effect of these two (FSW and TIG) welding processes on the tensile and fatigue properties of dissimilar AA5082-AA7075 butt welded joints were studied. The S-N curve for both, FSW and TIG, joints were established. The results exhibited that the tensile and fatigue properties of dissimilar FSW welded butt joints are better than those of dissimilar TIG welded butt joints. The fatigue strength for FSWed and TIG welded joint is determined as 40 MPa for 106 cycles and 30 MPa for 105 cycles of fatigue life, respectively. The micro-hardness of the joints is also studied for both joints. The hardness for TIG joint is lower than the FSWed joint in the welded zone

    Synthesis of the semi-organic nonlinear optical crystal l-glutamic acid zinc chloride and investigation of its growth and physiochemical properties

    The aim of this study is to synthesize and investigate the growth and physiochemical properties of the nonlinear optical semi-organic crystal l-glutamic acid zinc chloride (LGAZC). An optically transparent and defect-free crystal was grown with the slow evaporation solution growth technique under optimized conditions. The induction periods were measured at various supersaturations, and the interfacial energies were evaluated. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the crystal has an orthorhombic structure with space group P212121, and the calculated lattice parameters are a = 5.20 Ã, b = 6.99 Ã, c = 17.58 Ã, α = β = γ = 90° and volume = 623.411 Ã3. Spectroscopic properties were investigated by recording the Fourier transform infrared and optical transmission spectra. The thermal decomposition of the grown crystal was investigated by Thermo Gravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA). The LGAZC crystal exhibits second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency 1.5 times that of inorganic KDP crystal. The presence of the metal ion (Zn+) in a grown crystal was identified by EDAX spectrum analysis. The photoconductivity study demonstrates that LGAZC crystal has a positive photo conducting nature.     Synthesis, growth and characterization of semiorganic nonlinear optical single crystal bis(thiourea) barium nitrate (BTBN) for frequency conversion

    A novel semiorganic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal, bis(thiourea) barium nitrate (BTBN) was synthesized and grown by slow evaporation method. Structure of the new crystalline compound was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and it showed that BTBN belongs to orthorhombic crystal system. The crystalline nature of the BTBN was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction study. Important functional groups of BTBN were identified by FT-IR spectroscopic analysis. UV-Vis-NIR spectral study showed that the grown crystal is transparent in the entire visible region with low cut off wavelength of 304 nm. BTBN exhibits a SHG efficiency which is nearly 2.38 times higher than that of KDP. The BTBN crystal has high mechanical strength and belongs to soft category, which was confirmed by micorhardness study. The thermal stability of BTBN was determined from TGA and DTA thermal study which revealed that the BTBN crystal has thermal stability up to 243.1 °C. The surface properties and presence of elements was analyzed by SEM and EDAX study, respectively

    Multiobjective EA Approach for Improved Quality of Solutions for Spanning Tree Problem

    The problem of computing spanning trees along with specific constraints is mostly NP-hard. Many approximation and stochastic algorithms which yield a single solution, have been proposed. In this paper, we formulate the generic multi-objective spanning tree (MOST) problem and consider edge-cost and diameter as the two objectives. Since the problem is hard, and the Pareto-front is unknown, the main issue in such problem-instances is how to assess the convergence. We use a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) that produces diverse solutions without needing a priori knowledge of the solution space, and generate solutions from multiple tribes in order to assess movement of the solution front. Since no experimental results are available for MOST, we consider three well known diameter-constrained minimum spanning tree (dc-MST) algorithms including randomized greedy heuristics (RGH) which represents the current state of the art on the dc-MST, and modify them to yield a (near-) optimal solution-fronts. We quantify the obtained solution fronts for comparison. We observe that MOEA provides superior solutions in the entire-range of the Pareto-front, which none of the existing algorithms could individually do
