    A Photographic Composition Assistant for Intelligent Virtual 3D Camera Systems

    Abstract. A human photographer can frame an image and enhance its composi-tion by visualizing how elements in the frame could be better sized or posi-tioned. The photographer resizes elements in the frame by changing the zoom lens or by varying his or her distance to the subject. The photographer moves elements by panning. An intelligent virtual photographer can apply a similar process. Given an initial 3D camera view, a user or application specifies high-level composition goals such as Rule of Thirds or balance. Each objective de-fines either a One-D interval for image scaling or a Two-D interval for transla-tion. Two-D projections of objects are translated and scaled in the frame ac-cording to computed optima. These Two-D scales and translates are mapped to matching changes in the 3D field of view (zoom), dolly-in or out varying sub-ject distance, and rotating the aim direction to improve the composition.

    Establishing key criteria to define and compare models of specialist palliative care : a mixed-methods study using qualitative interviews and Delphi survey

    Background: Specialist palliative care services have various configurations of staff, processes and interventions, which determine how care is delivered. Currently, there is no consistent way to define and distinguish these different models of care. Aim: To identify the core components that characterise and differentiate existing models of specialist palliative care in the United Kingdom. Design: Mixed-methods study: (1) semi-structured interviews to identify criteria, (2) two-round Delphi study to rank/refine criteria, and (3) structured interviews to test/refine criteria. Setting/participants: Specialist palliative care stakeholders from hospice inpatient, hospital advisory, and community settings. Results: (1) Semi-structured interviews with 14 clinical leads, from eight UK organisations (five hospice inpatient units, two hospital advisory teams, five community teams), provided 34 preliminary criteria. (2) Delphi study: Round 1 (54 participants): thirty-four criteria presented, seven removed and seven added. Round 2 (30 participants): these 34 criteria were ranked with the 15 highest ranked criteria, including setting, type of care, size of service, diagnoses, disciplines, mode of care, types of interventions, ‘out-of-hours’ components (referrals, times, disciplines, mode of care, type of care), external education, use of measures, bereavement follow-up and complex grief provision. (3) Structured interviews with 21 UK service leads (six hospice inpatients, four hospital advisory and nine community teams) refined the criteria from (1) and (2), and provided four further contextual criteria (team purpose, funding, self-referral acceptance and discharge). Conclusion: In this innovative study, we derive 20 criteria to characterise and differentiate models of specialist palliative care – a major paradigm shift to enable accurate reporting and comparison in practice and research

    Structure, mass and stability of galactic disks

    In this review I concentrate on three areas related to structure of disks in spiral galaxies. First I will review the work on structure, kinematics and dynamics of stellar disks. Next I will review the progress in the area of flaring of HI layers. These subjects are relevant for the presence of dark matter and lead to the conclusion that disk are in general not `maximal', have lower M/L ratios than previously suspected and are locally stable w.r.t. Toomre's Q criterion for local stability.     Anthropogenic Space Weather

    Anthropogenic effects on the space environment started in the late 19th century and reached their peak in the 1960s when high-altitude nuclear explosions were carried out by the USA and the Soviet Union. These explosions created artificial radiation belts near Earth that resulted in major damages to several satellites. Another, unexpected impact of the high-altitude nuclear tests was the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that can have devastating effects over a large geographic area (as large as the continental United States). Other anthropogenic impacts on the space environment include chemical release ex- periments, high-frequency wave heating of the ionosphere and the interaction of VLF waves with the radiation belts. This paper reviews the fundamental physical process behind these phenomena and discusses the observations of their impacts.Comment: 71 pages, 35 figure

    Polygenic risk score analysis reveals shared genetic burden between epilepsy and psychiatric comorbidities

    One in three people with epilepsy experiences psychiatric comorbidity, with higher rates in people with drug-resistant epilepsy. Despite their high heritabilities, finding genetic links between epilepsy and psychiatric disorders has proven difficult. We used polygenic risk scoring (PRS) to test whether people with epilepsy have an increased polygenic burden of common genetic variants for depression, anxiety, psychosis, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and examined whether such polygenic burden influences the response to pharmacological treatment of epilepsy.MethodsPhenotype data in the UK Biobank were assessed to identify people with 1) epilepsy (n=8 488), 2) depression (n=143 440), 3) psychosis (n=2 357), 4) ADHD (n=89), and 5) anxiety (n=18 222. Using genotype data and restricting to Caucasian-ancestry samples (n=409 634), PRS for each psychiatric trait were calculated and multinomial regression was used to compare 1) population controls, 2) people with epilepsy and no psychiatric illness, 3) people with epilepsy and the psychiatric trait of interest, and 4) people with the psychiatric trait of interest and no epilepsy. Fixed-effect meta-analysis was used to compare psychiatric PRS in drug-resistant and drug-responsive epilepsy samples from the UK Biobank (n=1 640) and the EpiPGX consortium (n=3 449).ResultsAfter correction for multiple testing, people with epilepsy showed elevated PRS for depression (p<2 x10−16), psychosis (p=0.04) and ADHD (p<0.001). Patients with drug-resistant epilepsy had an increased PRS for psychosis (p=0.002) and depression (p=0.0004) relative to responsive cases.ConclusionWe present evidence that the common genetic basis of epilepsy overlaps with that of psychiatric conditions which are frequently comorbid in people with epilepsy. Common genetic variants that drive psychiatric illness are enriched in people with drug-resistant epilepsy.     A search for prompt lepton-jets in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search is presented for a new, light boson with a mass of about 1 GeV and decaying promptly to jets of collimated electrons and/or muons (lepton-jets). The analysis is performed with 20.3 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Events are required to contain at least two lepton-jets.     Search for the production of single vector-like and excited quarks in the Wt final state in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search for vector-like quarks and excited quarks in events containing a top quark and a W boson in the final state is reported here. The search is based on 20.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data taken at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. Events with one or two leptons, and one, two or three jets are selected with the additional requirement that at least one jet contains a b-quark. Single-lepton events are also required to contain at least one large-radius jet from the hadronic decay of a high-pTW boson or a top quark. No significant excess over the expected background is observed and upper limits on the cross-section times branching ratio for different vector-like quark and excited-quark model masses are derived. For the excited-quark production and decay to Wt with unit couplings, quarks with masses below 1500 GeV are excluded and coupling-dependent limits are set

    Measurement of event-shape observables in Z→ℓ+ℓ− events in pp collisions at √ s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Event-shape observables measured using charged particles in inclusive ZZ-boson events are presented, using the electron and muon decay modes of the ZZ bosons. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 1.1fb11.1 {\rm fb}^{-1} of proton--proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV. Charged-particle distributions, excluding the lepton--antilepton pair from the ZZ-boson decay, are measured in different ranges of transverse momentum of the ZZ boson. Distributions include multiplicity, scalar sum of transverse momenta, beam thrust, transverse thrust, spherocity, and F\mathcal{F}-parameter, which are in particular sensitive to properties of the underlying event at small values of the ZZ-boson transverse momentum. The Sherpa event generator shows larger deviations from the measured observables than Pythia8 and Herwig7.     Search for gravitational waves from Scorpius X-1 in the second Advanced LIGO observing run with an improved hidden Markov model

    We present results from a semicoherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the low-mass x-ray binary Scorpius X-1, using a hidden Markov model (HMM) to track spin wandering. This search improves on previous HMM-based searches of LIGO data by using an improved frequency domain matched filter, the J-statistic, and by analyzing data from Advanced LIGO's second observing run. In the frequency range searched, from 60 to 650 Hz, we find no evidence of gravitational radiation. At 194.6 Hz, the most sensitive search frequency, we report an upper limit on gravitational wave strain (at 95% confidence) of h095%=3.47×10-25 when marginalizing over source inclination angle. This is the most sensitive search for Scorpius X-1, to date, that is specifically designed to be robust in the presence of spin wandering. © 2019 American Physical Society
