Progress in the determination of the cross section
Improving previous calculations, we compute the cross section using QCD sum rules. Our sum rules for the , , and hadronic
matrix elements are constructed by using vaccum-pion correlation functions, and
we work up to twist-4 in the soft-pion limit. Our results suggest that, using
meson exchange models is perfectly acceptable, provided that they include form
factors and that they respect chiral symmetry. After doing a thermal average we
get mb at T=150\MeV.Comment: 22 pages, RevTeX4 including 7 figures in ps file
Saturation in diffractive deep inelastic eA scattering
In this paper we investigate the saturation physics in diffractive deep
inelastic electron-ion scattering. We estimate the energy and nuclear
dependence of the ratio and predict the x_{\pom}
and behavior of the nuclear diffractive structure function
. Moreover, we analyze the ratio
,
which probes the nuclear dependence of the structure of the Pomeron. We show
that saturation physics predicts that approximately 37 % of the events observed
at eRHIC should be diffractive.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures. Version to be published in the European Physical

Probing the Color Glass Condensate in an electron-ion collider
Perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) predicts that the small- gluons
in a hadron wavefunction should form a Color Glass Condensate (CGC),
characterized by a saturation scale which is energy and atomic
number dependent. In this paper we study the predictions of CGC physics for
electron - ion collisions at high energies. We consider that the nucleus at
high energies acts as an amplifier of the physics of high parton densities and
estimate the nuclear structure function , as well as the
longitudinal and charm contributions, using a generalization for nuclear
targets of the Iancu-Itakura-Munier model which describes the HERA data
quite well. Moreover, we investigate the behavior of the logarithmic slopes of
the total and longitudinal structure functions in the kinematical region of the
future electron - ion collider eRHIC.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. Version to be published in the European Physical

K^* Mesons and Nucleon Strangeness
We study contributions to the nucleon strange quark vector current form
factors from intermediate states containing K^* mesons. We show how these
contributions may be comparable in magnitude to those made by K mesons, using
methods complementary to those employed in quark model studies. We also analyze
the degree of theoretical uncertainty associated with K^* contributions.Comment: 21 pages, RevTex, 2 PS figures included with epsf.st
Adolescence is a sensitive period for prefrontal microglia to act on cognitive development
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is a cortical brain region that regulates various cognitive functions. One distinctive feature of the PFC is its protracted adolescent maturation, which is necessary for acquiring mature cognitive abilities in adulthood. Here, we show that microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, contribute to this maturational process. We find that transient and cell-specific deficiency of prefrontal microglia in adolescence is sufficient to induce an adult emergence of PFC-associated impairments in cognitive functions, dendritic complexity, and synaptic structures. While prefrontal microglia deficiency in adolescence also altered the excitatory-inhibitory balance in adult prefrontal circuits, there were no cognitive sequelae when prefrontal microglia were depleted in adulthood. Thus, our findings identify adolescence as a sensitive period for prefrontal microglia to act on cognitive development
Momentum transfer dependence of nuclear transparency from the quasielastic 12C(e,e’p) reaction
The cross section for quasielastic 12C(e,e’p) scattering has been measured at momentum transfer Q2=1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The results are consistent with scattering from a single nucleon as the dominant process. The nuclear transparency is obtained and compared with theoretical calculations that incorporate color transparency effects. No significant rise of the transparency with Q2 is observed
Genuine Correlations of Like-Sign Particles in Hadronic Z0 Decays
Correlations among hadrons with the same electric charge produced in Z0
decays are studied using the high statistics data collected from 1991 through
1995 with the OPAL detector at LEP. Normalized factorial cumulants up to fourth
order are used to measure genuine particle correlations as a function of the
size of phase space domains in rapidity, azimuthal angle and transverse
momentum. Both all-charge and like-sign particle combinations show strong
positive genuine correlations. One-dimensional cumulants initially increase
rapidly with decreasing size of the phase space cells but saturate quickly. In
contrast, cumulants in two- and three-dimensional domains continue to increase.
The strong rise of the cumulants for all-charge multiplets is increasingly
driven by that of like-sign multiplets. This points to the likely influence of
Bose-Einstein correlations. Some of the recently proposed algorithms to
simulate Bose-Einstein effects, implemented in the Monte Carlo model PYTHIA,
are found to reproduce reasonably well the measured second- and higher-order
correlations between particles with the same charge as well as those in
all-charge particle multiplets.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
