A new, more efficient waterwheel design for very-low-head hydropower schemes

Very-low-head hydropower constitutes a large untapped renewable energy source, estimated at 1 GW in the UK alone. A new type of low-impact waterwheel has been developed and tested at Abertay University in Scotland to improve the economic viability of such schemes. For example, on a 2·5 m high weir in the UK with 5 m3/s mean flow, one waterwheel could produce an annual investment return of 7·5% for over 100 years. This paper describes the evolution of the design and reports on scale-model tests. These show that the new design harnesses significant potential and kinetic energy to generate power and handles over four times as much water per metre width compared to traditional designs

Returning the Radiant Gaze: Visual art and embodiment in a world of subjects

Drawing on the latter thinking of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, as well as on the ideas of other contemporary philosophers and theorists, this essay considers the denigration of vision from Plato to twentieth-century anti-ocularism, and argues for the reclamation of vision and visual perception as sensuous, embodied interplay between humans and world, self and other—an opening to wonder and more sensitive human-world relations. It does so through a phenomenological exploration of the process of art-making, and consideration of the role and value of artworks and images in the world. This essay is first and foremost an enquiry. As such it promises no final conclusions but is rather a process, a journey through the contested territory of the sensual world of art and vision

This article considers points of connection and coherence between and among the Rome I Regulation, the Rome II Regulation, and Regulation 1215, and relevant predecessor instruments. The degree of consistency in aim, design and detail of conflict of laws rules is examined, vertically (between/among consecutive instruments) and horizontally (across cognate instruments). Symbiosis between instruments is explored, as is the interrelationship between choice of court and choice of law. Disadvantaged parties, and the cohesiveness of their treatment under the Regulations, receive particular attention

Quantum collision theory with phase-space distributions

Quantum-mechanical phase-space distributions, introduced by Wigner in 1932, provide an intuitive alternative to the usual wave-function approach to problems in scattering and reaction theory. The aim of the present work is to collect and extend previous efforts in a unified way, emphasizing the parallels among problems in ordinary quantum theory, nuclear physics, chemical physics, and quantum field theory. The method is especially useful in providing easy reductions to classical physics and kinetic regimes under suitable conditions. Section II, dealing in detail with potential scattering of a spinless nonrelativistic particle, provides the background for more complex problems. Following a brief description of the two-body problem, the authors address the N-body problem with special attention to hierarchy closures, Boltzmann-Vlasov equations, and hydrodynamic aspects. The final section sketches past and possibly future applications to a wide variety of problems
