    Homoisoflavonoids are potent glucose transporter 2 (GLUT 2) inhibitors–a potential mechanism for the glucose-lowering properties of Polygonatum odoratum

    Foods of high carbohydrate content such as sucrose or starch increase postprandial blood glucose concentrations. The glucose absorption system in the intestine comprises two components: sodium-dependent glucose transporter-1 (SGLT1) and glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2). Here five sappanin-type (SAP) homoisoflavonoids were identified as novel potent GLUT2 inhibitors, with three of them isolated from the fibrous roots of Polygonatum odoratum (Mill.) Druce. SAP homoisolflavonoids had a stronger inhibitory effect on 25 mM glucose transport (41.6 ± 2.5, 50.5 ± 7.6, 47.5 ± 1.9, 42.6 ± 2.4, and 45.7 ± 4.1% for EA-1, EA-2, EA-3, MOA, and MOB) than flavonoids (19.3 ± 2.2, 11.5 ± 3.7, 16.4 ± 2.4, 5.3 ± 1.0, 3.7 ± 2.2, and 18.1 ± 2.4% for apigenin, luteolin, quercetin, naringenin, hesperetin, and genistein) and phloretin (28.1 ± 1.6%) at 15 μM. SAP homoisoflavonoids and SGLT1 inhibitors were found to synergistically inhibit the uptake of glucose using an in vitro model comprising Caco-2 cells. This observed new mechanism of the glucose-lowering action of P. odoratum suggests that SAP homoisoflavonoids and their combination with flavonoid monoglucosides show promise as naturally functional ingredients for inclusion in foods and drinks designed to control postprandial glucose levels

    The CUAVA-1 CubeSat—A Pathfinder Satellite for Remote Sensing and Earth Observation

    In this paper we report a 3U CubeSat named CUAVA-1 designed by the ARC Training Centre for CubeSats, UAVs, and Their Applications (CUAVA). CUAVA, funded by the Australian Research Council, aims to train students, develop new instruments and technology to solve crucial problems, and help develop a world-class Australian industry in CubeSats, UAVs, and related products. The CUAVA-1 project is the Centre’s first CubeSat mission, following on from the 2 Australian satellites INSPIRE-2 and UNSW-EC0 CubeSats that launched in 2017. The mission is designed to serve as a precursor for a series of Earth observations missions and to demonstrate new technologies developed by our partners. We also intend to use the satellite to provide students hands-on experiences and to gain experience for our engineering, science and industry teams for future, more complex, missions

    Factors associated with home hazards: findings from the Malaysian Elders Longitudinal Research study

    Aim: Previous studies have investigated home hazards as a risk factor for falls without considering factors associated with the presence of home hazards. The present study aimed to determine patterns of home hazards among urban community-dwelling older Malaysians, and to identify factors contributing to home hazards. Methods: Cross-sectional data from the initial wave of the Malaysian Elders Longitudinal Research study were used. Basic demographics were obtained from the Global Questionnaire. Basic and instrumental activities of daily living were measured using the Katz and Lawton-Brody scales, and home hazards were identified using the Home Falls and Accidents Screening Tool. Participants were also asked if they had fallen in the previous 12 months. Results: Data were analyzed from 1489 participants. Hazards were frequently identified (>30%) in the toilet and bathroom areas (no grab rail, no non-slip mat, distant toilet), slippery floors, no bedside light access and inappropriate footwear. Lower educational attainment, traditional housing, Chinese ethnicity, greater number of home occupants, lower monthly expenditure, poor vision and younger age were the factors independently associated with home hazards. Conclusions: This study provides evidence that home hazards are a product of the interaction of the individual's function within their home environment. Hazards are also influenced by local sociocultural and environmental factors. The relationship between home hazards and falls appears complex and deserves further evaluation

    Self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) have attracted much attention in the last years. These nanostructures are very interesting from a scientifi c point of view because they form nearly ideal zero-dimensional systems in which quantum confi nement effects become very important. These unique properties also make them very interesting from a technological point of view. For example, InAs QDs are employed in QD lasers, single electron transistors, midinfrared detectors, single-photon sources, etc. InAs QDs are commonly created by the Stranski–Krastanov growth mode when InAs is deposited on a substrate with a bigger lattice constant, like GaAs or InP [10] . Above a certain critical thickness of InAs, three-dimensional islands are spontaneously formed on top of a wetting layer (WL) to reduce the strain energy.     Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

    Detailed Anatomical and Electrophysiological Models of Human Atria and Torso for the Simulation of Atrial Activation

    Atrial arrhythmias, and specifically atrial fibrillation (AF), induce rapid and irregular activation patterns that appear on the torso surface as abnormal P-waves in electrocardiograms and body surface potential maps (BSPM). In recent years both P-waves and the BSPM have been used to identify the mechanisms underlying AF, such as localizing ectopic foci or high-frequency rotors. However, the relationship between the activation of the different areas of the atria and the characteristics of the BSPM and P-wave signals are still far from being completely understood. In this work we developed a multi-scale framework, which combines a highly-detailed 3D atrial model and a torso model to study the relationship between atrial activation and surface signals in sinus rhythm. Using this multi scale model, it was revealed that the best places for recording P-waves are the frontal upper right and the frontal and rear left quadrants of the torso.
