The Topological Unitarity Identities in Chern-Simons Theories

    Get PDF
Starting from the generating functional of the theory of relativistic spinors in 2+1 dimensions interacting through the pure Chern-Simons gauge field, the S-matrix is constructed and seen to be formally the same as that of spinor quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions with Feynman diagrams having external photon lines excluded, and with the propagator of the topological Chern-Simons photon substituted for the Maxwell photon propagator. It is shown that the absence of real topological photons in the complete set of vector states of the total Hilbert space leads in a given order of perturbation theory to topological unitarity identities that demand the vanishing of the gauge-invariant sum of the imaginary parts of Feynman diagrams with a given number of internal on-shell free topological photon lines. It is also shown, that these identities can be derived outside the framework of perturbation theory. The identities are verified explicitly for the scattering of a fermion-antifermion pair in one-loop order.Comment: 13 pages, LaTex file, one figure (not included

Charmonium states in QCD-inspired quark potential model using Gaussian expansion method

We investigate the mass spectrum and electromagnetic processes of charmonium system with the nonperturbative treatment for the spin-dependent potentials, comparing the pure scalar and scalar-vector mixing linear confining potentials. It is revealed that the scalar-vector mixing confinement would be important for reproducing the mass spectrum and decay widths, and therein the vector component is predicted to be around 22%. With the state wave functions obtained via the full-potential Hamiltonian, the long-standing discrepancy in M1 radiative transitions of J/ψJ/\psi and ψâ€Č\psi^{\prime} are alleviated spontaneously. This work also intends to provide an inspection and suggestion for the possible ccˉc\bar{c} among the copious higher charmonium-like states. Particularly, the newly observed X(4160) and X(4350) are found in the charmonium family mass spectrum as M(21D2)=4164.9M(2^1D_2)= 4164.9 MeV and M(33P2)=4352.4M(3^3P_2)= 4352.4 MeV, which strongly favor the JPC=2−+,2++J^{PC}=2^{-+}, 2^{++} assignments respectively. The corresponding radiative transitions, leptonic and two-photon decay widths have been also predicted theoretically for the further experimental search.Comment: 16 pages,3 figure

Incorporating image quality in multi-algorithm fingerprint verification

The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/11608288_29Proceedings of International Conference, ICB 2006, Hong Kong (China)The effect of image quality on the performance of fingerprint verification is studied. In particular, we investigate the performance of two fingerprint matchers based on minutiae and ridge information as well as their score-level combination under varying fingerprint image quality. The ridge-based system is found to be more robust to image quality degradation than the minutiae-based system. We exploit this fact by introducing an adaptive score fusion scheme based on automatic quality estimation in the spatial frequency domain. The proposed scheme leads to enhanced performance over a wide range of fingerprint image quality. This work has been supported by Spanish MCYT TIC2003-08382-C05-01 and by European Commission IST-2002-507634 Biosecure NoE projects

Ti alloy with enhanced machinability in UAT turning

Metastable ÎČ-titanium alloys such as Ti 15V 3Al 3Cr 3Sn are of great technological interest thanks to their high fatigue strength-to-density ratio. However, their high hardness and poor machinability increase machining costs. Additionally, formation of undesirable long chips increases the machining time. To address those issues, a metastable ÎČ-titanium alloy (Ti 15V 3Al 3Cr 2Zr 0.9La) with enhanced machinability was developed to produce short chips even at low cutting speeds. A hybrid ultrasonically assisted machining technique, known to reduce cutting forces, was employed in this study. Cutting force components and surface quality of the finished work-pieces were analyzed for a range of cutting speeds in comparison with those for more traditional Ti 15V 3Al 3Cr 3Sn. The novel alloy demonstrated slightly improved machining characteristics at higher cutting speeds and is now ready for industrial applications

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Get PDF
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B. Autoantibody Production in Cancer—The Humoral Immune Response toward Autologous Antigens in Cancer Patients

    Get PDF
A link between autoimmune responses and cancer via autoantibodies was first described in the 1950s. Since, autoantibodies have been studied for their potential use as cancer biomarkers, however the exact causes of their production remain to be elucidated. This review summarizes current theories of the causes of autoantibody production in cancer, namely: 1) defects in tolerance and inflammation, 2) changes in protein expression levels, 3) altered protein structure, and 4) cellular death mechanisms. We also highlight the need for further research into this field to improve our understanding of autoantibodies as biomarkers for cancer development and progression

The performance of the jet trigger for the ATLAS detector during 2011 data taking

    Get PDF
The performance of the jet trigger for the ATLAS detector at the LHC during the 2011 data taking period is described. During 2011 the LHC provided proton–proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and heavy ion collisions with a 2.76 TeV per nucleon–nucleon collision energy. The ATLAS trigger is a three level system designed to reduce the rate of events from the 40 MHz nominal maximum bunch crossing rate to the approximate 400 Hz which can be written to offline storage. The ATLAS jet trigger is the primary means for the online selection of events containing jets. Events are accepted by the trigger if they contain one or more jets above some transverse energy threshold. During 2011 data taking the jet trigger was fully efficient for jets with transverse energy above 25 GeV for triggers seeded randomly at Level 1. For triggers which require a jet to be identified at each of the three trigger levels, full efficiency is reached for offline jets with transverse energy above 60 GeV. Jets reconstructed in the final trigger level and corresponding to offline jets with transverse energy greater than 60 GeV, are reconstructed with a resolution in transverse energy with respect to offline jets, of better than 4 % in the central region and better than 2.5 % in the forward direction
