Industrial By-Products As a Novel Circular Source of Biocompatible Extracellular Vesicles
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) constitute an intricate system of molecular
exchange that has recently gained tremendous interest. However, sustainable
sources of safe biological EVs remain scarce and elusive. This study explores
and defines the use of food industry by-products (BP) as a circular source
of safe biocompatible EVs. Averaged diameter and molecular compositions
indicate a large yield of exosomes and high abundancy of membrane lipids with
signaling capacity in these vesicles. Complex proteomes mimicking those
circulating in human blood plasma are also identified. Furthermore, BP-EVs
do not show relevant cytotoxicity and display excellent oral and intravenous
bioavailability together with specific organ targeting capacity. Collectively, it is
believed that the novel findings reported here will open substantial venues for
the use of BP as an optimal source of biocompatible nanovesicles in manifold
applications of the biotechnological and biomedical fields. The authors sincerely thank Gemma Plaza, oenologist at the Castell del Remei winery in Penelles, Lleida, Spain and Juan Carlos Blanco, production manager at Mahou San Miguel in Alovera, Madrid, Spain for their kind and altruistic help on the obtention of their respective industry by-product samples. Physics searches at the LHC
With the LHC up and running, the focus of experimental and theoretical high
energy physics will soon turn to an interpretation of LHC data in terms of the
physics of electroweak symmetry breaking and the TeV scale. We present here a
broad review of models for new TeV-scale physics and their LHC signatures. In
addition, we discuss possible new physics signatures and describe how they can
be linked to specific models of physics beyond the Standard Model. Finally, we
illustrate how the LHC era could culminate in a detailed understanding of the
underlying principles of TeV-scale physics.Comment: 184 pages, 55 figures, 14 tables, hundreds of references; scientific

Association Between Preexisting Versus Newly Identified Atrial Fibrillation and Outcomes of Patients With Acute Pulmonary Embolism
Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) may exist before or occur early in the course of pulmonary embolism (PE). We determined the PE outcomes based on the presence and timing of AF. Methods and Results Using the data from a multicenter PE registry, we identified 3 groups: (1) those with preexisting AF, (2) patients with new AF within 2 days from acute PE (incident AF), and (3) patients without AF. We assessed the 90-day and 1-year risk of mortality and stroke in patients with AF, compared with those without AF (reference group). Among 16 497 patients with PE, 792 had preexisting AF. These patients had increased odds of 90-day all-cause (odds ratio [OR], 2.81; 95% CI, 2.33-3.38) and PE-related mortality (OR, 2.38; 95% CI, 1.37-4.14) and increased 1-year hazard for ischemic stroke (hazard ratio, 5.48; 95% CI, 3.10-9.69) compared with those without AF. After multivariable adjustment, preexisting AF was associated with significantly increased odds of all-cause mortality (OR, 1.91; 95% CI, 1.57-2.32) but not PE-related mortality (OR, 1.50; 95% CI, 0.85-2.66). Among 16 497 patients with PE, 445 developed new incident AF within 2 days of acute PE. Incident AF was associated with increased odds of 90-day all-cause (OR, 2.28; 95% CI, 1.75-2.97) and PE-related (OR, 3.64; 95% CI, 2.01-6.59) mortality but not stroke. Findings were similar in multivariable analyses. Conclusions In patients with acute symptomatic PE, both preexisting AF and incident AF predict adverse clinical outcomes. The type of adverse outcomes may differ depending on the timing of AF onset.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The topic of study of this research is to see that live music has more impact on children compared to canned music and audiovisual format. Therefore, this research analyzes how it influences children to participate in an unexpected way to a live musical hearing, and on the other hand, to analyze how influences in the same children the recording music on the one hand, and video music on the other. Thus, in the three musical formats, we want to analyze the attitudes, emotions, reflections, and spontaneous comments of the three groups of children with whom the research has been carried out. The qualitative method of data collection is done through direct observation in the classroom and the forms filled in by the families from which the results will be drawn using indicators established to analyze the reaction and the individual behavior of each boy and girl during the musical experience. The interpreted data is represented in pie charts and complementary descriptions. In terms of results, there is a tendency for live songs that have the most impact on children
Study of boron behaviour in two spanish coal combustion power plants
A full-scale field study was carried out at two Spanish coal-fired power plants equipped with electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and wet flue gas desulfurisation (FGD) systems to investigate the distribution of boron in coals, solid by-products, wastewater streams and flue gases. The results were obtained from the simultaneous sampling of solid, liquid and gaseous streams and their subsequent analysis in two different laboratories for purposes of comparison. Although the final aim of this study was to evaluate the partitioning of boron in a (co-)combustion power plant, special attention was paid to the analytical procedure for boron determination. A sample preparation procedure was optimised for coal and combustion by-products to overcome some specific shortcomings of the currently used acid digestion methods. In addition boron mass balances and removal efficiencies in ESP and FGD devices were calculated. Mass balance closures between 83 and 149% were obtained. During coal combustion, 95% of the incoming boron was collected in the fly ashes. The use of petroleum coke as co-combustible produced a decrease in the removal efficiency of the ESP (87%). Nevertheless, more than 90% of the remaining gaseous boron was eliminated via the FGD in the wastewater discharged from the scrubber, thereby causing environmental problems. This work was carried out with the aid of a grant from the research fund for coal and steel (RFCR-CT-2006-00006). R.O.G. thanks FICYT (Asturias Regional Research Programme) for funding her PhD work with a fellowship. We would like to thank the staff from the power plants for their support, help and kind assistance before, during and after the sampling campaigns.Peer reviewe
