    Doctoral Students’ Perceived Barriers that Slow the Progress toward Completing a Doctoral Dissertation: A Mixed Analysis

    The non-completion of doctoral degrees has been a concern due to its economic, social, and personal consequences. In the current study, the researchers investigated perceived barriers of select doctoral students in completing their doctoral degrees by utilizing a fully mixed sequential mixed research design. The quantitative and qualitative data were concurrently collected using identical samples (n = 205) via a Reading Interest Survey questionnaire. A sequential mixed analysis revealed 6 emergent themes: external obligations (36%), challenges to doctoral-level researchers (34%), practical/logistical constraints (23%), emotional concerns (15%), program structure (9%), and support for completion (8%). Also, 3 meta-themes were identified (i.e., dissociation, external/internal barriers, and institutional/personal barriers), which aided in explaining the relationships among the 6 primary themes.     Survival Strategies: Doctoral Students’ Perceptions of Challenges and Coping Methods

    The purpose of this collective case study was to use a critical dialectical pluralistic (CDP) philosophical lens to investigate select doctoral students’ perceptions about the challenges that they encountered while in a doctorate program and the coping strategies that they found effective in mitigating these challenges. A major goal of CDP is to empower research participants maximally by giving them the role of participant-researchers. Participants were 10 doctoral students enrolled at a Tier-II university in the United States, who were selected via convenience sampling. Each student participated in a face-to-face interview with a member of the research team—consistent with a CDP approach. A qualitative-dominant crossover mixed analysis was used wherein both quantitative and qualitative analyses were used to analyze the qualitative data, with the qualitative analysis phase being dominant. The qualitative analyses (e.g., constant comparison analysis, classical content analysis) revealed the following five themes: compartmentalization of life, outside support systems, justification for participation in program, emotional status, and structure of program. These themes indicated that although challenges are plentiful, particularly in terms of balancing one’s academic life with other obligations, participants found support and encouragement from family, friends, and other doctoral students to be the most beneficial coping strategy. These findings have important implications for the structuring of doctoral programs

    Prediction of cognition in Parkinson's disease with a clinical–genetic score: a longitudinal analysis of nine cohorts

    International audienceSummary Background Cognitive decline is a debilitating manifestation of disease progression in Parkinson’s disease. We aimed to develop a clinical-genetic score to predict global cognitive impairment in patients with the disease. Methods A prediction algorithm for global cognitive impairment (defined as Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) ≀25) was built using data from 1,350 patients with 5,165 longitudinal visits over 12.8 (median, 2.8) years. Age at onset, MMSE, education, motor exam score, gender, depression and GBA mutations, machine selected through stepwise Cox’ hazards analysis and Akaike’s information criterion, were used to compute the multivariable predictor. Independent validation was achieved in another 1,132 patients with 19,127 visits over 8.6 (median, 6.5) years. Findings The cognitive risk score accurately predicted cognitive impairment within ten years of disease onset with an area under the curve (AUC) of >0.85 in both the discovery (95% CI, 0.821–0.902) and validation populations (95% CI, 0.779 – 0.913). 72.6% of patients scoring in the highest quartile were cognitively impaired by ten years vs. 3.7% in the lowest quartile (hazard ratio, 18.4, 95% CI, 9.4 – 36.1). Dementia or disabling cognitive impairment was predicted with an AUC of 0.877 (95% CI 0.788–0.943) and high negative predictive value (0.920, 95% 0.877–0.954) at the predefined cutoff (0.196). Performance was stable in 10,000 randomly resampled subsets. Interpretation Our predictive algorithm provides a potential test for future cognitive health or impairment in patients with Parkinson’s. It could improve trials of cognitive interventions and inform on prognosis

    Atmospheric composition change: global and regional air quality

    Air quality transcends all scales with in the atmosphere from the local to the global with handovers and feedbacks at each scale interaction. Air quality has manifold effects on health, ecosystems, heritage and climate. In this review the state of scientific understanding in relation to global and regional air quality is outlined. The review discusses air quality, in terms of emissions, processing and transport of trace gases and aerosols. New insights into the characterization of both natural and anthropogenic emissions are reviewed looking at both natural (e.g. dust and lightning) as well as plant emissions. Trends in anthropogenic emissions both by region and globally are discussed as well as biomass burning emissions. In terms of chemical processing the major air quality elements of ozone, non-methane hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and aerosols are covered. A number of topics are presented as a way of integrating the process view into the atmospheric context; these include the atmospheric oxidation efficiency, halogen and HOx chemistry, nighttime chemistry, tropical chemistry, heat waves, megacities, biomass burning and the regional hot spot of the Mediterranean. New findings with respect to the transport of pollutants across the scales are discussed, in particular the move to quantify the impact of long-range transport on regional air quality. Gaps and research questions that remain intractable are identified. The review concludes with a focus of research and policy questions for the coming decade. In particular, the policy challenges for concerted air quality and climate change policy (co-benefit) are discussed
