Frame- and Segment-Level Features and Candidate Pool Evaluation for Video Caption Generation

We present our submission to the Microsoft Video to Language Challenge of generating short captions describing videos in the challenge dataset. Our model is based on the encoder--decoder pipeline, popular in image and video captioning systems. We propose to utilize two different kinds of video features, one to capture the video content in terms of objects and attributes, and the other to capture the motion and action information. Using these diverse features we train models specializing in two separate input sub-domains. We then train an evaluator model which is used to pick the best caption from the pool of candidates generated by these domain expert models. We argue that this approach is better suited for the current video captioning task, compared to using a single model, due to the diversity in the dataset. Efficacy of our method is proven by the fact that it was rated best in MSR Video to Language Challenge, as per human evaluation. Additionally, we were ranked second in the automatic evaluation metrics based table

On the Value Distribution of Two Dirichlet L-functions

We look at the values of two Dirichlet LL-functions at the Riemann zeros (or a horizontal shift of them). Off the critical line we show that for a positive proportion of these points the pairs of values of the two LL-functions are linearly independent over R\mathbb{R}, which, in particular, means that their arguments are different. On the critical line we show that, up to height TT, the values are different for cTcT of the Riemann zeros for some positive cc.Comment: 20 page

Micro-level evidence on wage rigidities in Finland

This paper analyses the flexibility of the Finnish labour markets from the microeconomic perspective by focusing on individual-level wage changes for job stayers. The study covers the private sector workers by using three separate data sets obtained from payroll records of employers’ associations. Two main conclusions from wage formation emerge. First, there has been macroeconomic flexibility in the labour market. Real wage rigidity declined during the early 1990’s recession and a large proportion of workers experienced real wage cuts. We also find that average wage changes respond negatively to an increase in unemployment. Second, the evidence based on individual-level wage change distributions show that especially real wages are definitely rigid in Finland in international comparison. In addition, the evidence points out that individual-level wage changes have regained the high levels of real rigidity during the late 1990s that prevailed in the 1980s, despite the continued high (but declining) level of unemployment

Measuring concept similarities in multimedia ontologies: analysis and evaluations

The recent development of large-scale multimedia concept ontologies has provided a new momentum for research in the semantic analysis of multimedia repositories. Different methods for generic concept detection have been extensively studied, but the question of how to exploit the structure of a multimedia ontology and existing inter-concept relations has not received similar attention. In this paper, we present a clustering-based method for modeling semantic concepts on low-level feature spaces and study the evaluation of the quality of such models with entropy-based methods. We cover a variety of methods for assessing the similarity of different concepts in a multimedia ontology. We study three ontologies and apply the proposed techniques in experiments involving the visual and semantic similarities, manual annotation of video, and concept detection. The results show that modeling inter-concept relations can provide a promising resource for many different application areas in semantic multimedia processing
