Berry phase for ferromagnet with fractional spin
We study the double exchange model on two lattice sites with one conduction
electron in the limit of an infinite Hund's interaction. While this simple
problem is exactly solvable, we present an approximate solution which is valid
in the limit of large core spins. This solution is obtained by integrating out
charge degrees of freedom. The effective action of two core spins obtained in
the result of such an integration resembles the action of two fractional spins.
We show that the action obtained via naive gradient expansion is inconsistent.
However, a ``non-perturbative'' treatment leads to an extra term in the
effective action which fixes this inconsistency. The obtained ``Berry phase
term'' is geometric in nature. It arises from a geometric constraint on a
target space imposed by an adiabatic approximation.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, revtex
Decay of the Sinai Well in D dimensions
We study the decay law of the Sinai Well in dimensions and relate the
behavior of the decay law to internal distributions that characterize the
dynamics of the system. We show that the long time tail of the decay is
algebraic (), irrespective of the dimension .Comment: 14 pages, Figures available under request. Revtex. Submitted to Phys.

Decay of Classical Chaotic Systems - the Case of the Bunimovich Stadium
The escape of an ensemble of particles from the Bunimovich stadium via a
small hole has been studied numerically. The decay probability starts out
exponentially but has an algebraic tail. The weight of the algebraic decay
tends to zero for vanishing hole size. This behaviour is explained by the slow
transport of the particles close to the marginally stable bouncing ball orbits.
It is contrasted with the decay function of the corresponding quantum system.Comment: 16 pages, RevTex, 3 figures are available upon request from

Measurement of coherent charge transfer in an adiabatic Cooper pair pump
We study adiabatic charge transfer in a superconducting Cooper pair pump,
focusing on the influence of current measurement on coherence. We investigate
the limit where the Josephson coupling energy between the various parts
of the system is small compared to the Coulomb charging energy . In this
case the charge transferred in a pumping cycle , the charge of one
Cooper pair: the main contribution is due to incoherent Cooper pair tunneling.
We are particularly interested in the quantum correction to , which is due
to coherent tunneling of pairs across the pump and which depends on the
superconducting phase difference between the electrodes: . A measurement of tends to destroy the phase
coherence. We first study an arbitrary measuring circuit and then specific
examples and show that coherent Cooper pair transfer can in principle be
detected using an inductively shunted ammeter
Quantum phase transitions from topology in momentum space
Many quantum condensed matter systems are strongly correlated and strongly
interacting fermionic systems, which cannot be treated perturbatively. However,
physics which emerges in the low-energy corner does not depend on the
complicated details of the system and is relatively simple. It is determined by
the nodes in the fermionic spectrum, which are protected by topology in
momentum space (in some cases, in combination with the vacuum symmetry). Close
to the nodes the behavior of the system becomes universal; and the universality
classes are determined by the toplogical invariants in momentum space. When one
changes the parameters of the system, the transitions are expected to occur
between the vacua with the same symmetry but which belong to different
universality classes. Different types of quantum phase transitions governed by
topology in momentum space are discussed in this Chapter. They involve Fermi
surfaces, Fermi points, Fermi lines, and also the topological transitions
between the fully gapped states. The consideration based on the momentum space
topology of the Green's function is general and is applicable to the vacua of
relativistic quantum fields. This is illustrated by the possible quantum phase
transition governed by topology of nodes in the spectrum of elementary
particles of Standard Model.Comment: 45 pages, 17 figures, 83 references, Chapter for the book "Quantum

Flux Phase as a Dynamic Jahn-Teller Phase: Berryonic Matter in the Cuprates?
There is considerable evidence for some form of charge ordering on the
hole-doped stripes in the cuprates, mainly associated with the low-temperature
tetragonal phase, but with some evidence for either charge density waves or a
flux phase, which is a form of dynamic charge-density wave. These three states
form a pseudospin triplet, demonstrating a close connection with the E X e
dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, suggesting that the cuprates constitute a form of
Berryonic matter. This in turn suggests a new model for the dynamic Jahn-Teller
effect as a form of flux phase. A simple model of the Cu-O bond stretching
phonons allows an estimate of electron-phonon coupling for these modes,
explaining why the half breathing mode softens so much more than the full
oxygen breathing mode. The anomalous properties of provide a coupling
(correlated hopping) which acts to stabilize density wave phases.Comment: Major Revisions: includes comparisons with specific cuprate phonon

Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons
We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with
states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar
collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed
as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+,
\bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1})
= 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
