    The Role and Importance of Physical Exercise on the Aggression Level of High School Students

    Introduction. The phenomenon of bullying is increasingly widespread among students and at the national level, all kinds of techniques and activities are being tried to combat it. Methods. In the present study, we aimed to measure the level of aggression among secondary school students, who participated in a Physical Education and Sports Program, held over a period of 6 months, with a frequency of 8 times/month. A number of 36 students, at the secondary school level, aged between 11- 15 years, from the rural environment, from the South-West Region of Oltenia, all enrolled in the same school, took part in this experiment. As a tool, the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ) was applied, with 4 scales: Physical Aggression, Verbal Aggression, Anger, and Hostility. Aggression was measured both before and after participation in the sports training program. Results. The results indicated a lower level of aggression at the end of the program, compared to the level present in the students, before following the sports training. Conclusions. Thus, physical and sports education can be an optimal means of controlling aggression and a catalyst for it in positive aspects and behaviors

    Measuring Energy, Estimating Hamiltonians, and the Time-Energy Uncertainty Relation

    Suppose that the Hamiltonian acting on a quantum system is unknown and one wants to determine what is the Hamiltonian. We show that in general this requires a time Δt\Delta t which obeys the uncertainty relation ΔtΔH1\Delta t \Delta H \gtrsim 1 where ΔH\Delta H is a measure of how accurately the unknown Hamiltonian must be estimated. We then apply this result to the problem of measuring the energy of an unknown quantum state. It has been previously shown that if the Hamiltonian is known, then the energy can in principle be measured in an arbitrarily short time. On the other hand we show that if the Hamiltonian is not known then an energy measurement necessarily takes a minimum time Δt\Delta t which obeys the uncertainty relation ΔtΔE1\Delta t \Delta E \gtrsim 1 where ΔE\Delta E is the precision of the energy measurement. Several examples are studied to address the question of whether it is possible to saturate these uncertainty relations.     Evaluation of the ampelographic characteristics of the new accessions introduced in grapevine germplasm collection (Vitis vinifera L.)

    The characterization of 22 grapevine accessions (Vitis vinifera L.), considered old, autochthonous and in danger for extinction, was performed using 49 OIV descriptors. The evaluation of the ampelographic descriptors for the young shoot, the young and mature leaf, the bunch, as well as some production and quality parameters, highlighted the diversity of the epigenetic characteristics of the newly introduced accessions into collection. The morphological description revealed the main features of each accession and the applied statistical approaches confirmed the possible relatedness among studied genotypes linked to all 49 descriptors

    The use of an e-learning constructivist solution in workplace learning

    We wished to investigate whether an e-learning approach which uses constructivist principles can be successfully applied to train employees in a highly specialised skill thought to require expert individuals and extensive prolonged training. The approach involved the development of an e-learning package which included simulations and interactivity, then experimental testing in a case study workplace environment with the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data to assess the effectiveness of the package. Our study shows that this e-learning strategy improved the skills of the inexperienced operator significantly. We therefore propose that such programmes could be used as a work based training aid and used as a model system for the training of employees in complex skilled tasks in the workplace. This research demonstrates that the e-learning can be applied outside the traditional learning environment to train unskilled employees to undertake complex practical tasks which traditionally would involve prohibitively expensive instruction. This work also illustrates that simulations and interactivity are powerful tools in the design of successful e-learning packages in preparing learners for real world practical situations. Finally this study shows that workplace learners can be better served by elearning environments rather than conventional training as they allow asynchronous learning and private study which are valued by employees who have other demands on their time and are more comfortable receiving tuition privately Relevance to industry: E-learning using constructivist principles, and incorporating simulations and interactivity can be used successfully in the training of highly specialised and skilled tasks required in the modern workplace

    Quantum Characterization of a Werner-like Mixture

    We introduce a Werner-like mixture [R. F. Werner, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 40}, 4277 (1989)] by considering two correlated but different degrees of freedom, one with discrete variables and the other with continuous variables. We evaluate the mixedness of this state, and its degree of entanglement establishing its usefulness for quantum information processing like quantum teleportation. Then, we provide its tomographic characterization. Finally, we show how such a mixture can be generated and measured in a trapped system like one electron in a Penning trap.Comment: 8 pages ReVTeX, 8 eps figure

    Composite bi-layered erodible films for potential ocular drug delivery

    Bi-layered hydroxypropylmethylcellulose and Eudragit based films were formulated as potential ocular drug delivery systems using chloramphenicol as a model antibiotic. Films were plasticized with polyethylene glycol 400 present in the Eudragit layer or both Eudragit and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose layers, and loaded with chloramphenicol (0.5% w/v in solution) in the hydroxypropylmethylcellulose layer. The weight, thickness and folding endurance optimized formulations were measured and further characterized for transparency, tensile, mucoadhesive, swelling and in vitro drug dissolution properties. The physical form of chloramphenicol within the films was evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), complimented with scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to assess the interactions between the drug and the film components and confirm chloramphenicol’s presence within the sample. Optimum films showed high transparency (≥ 80% transmittance), ease of peeling from Petri dish and folding endurance above 250. Average thickness was lower than contact lenses (0.4 - 1mm), confirming them as thin ocular films. The tensile properties showed a good balance between toughness and flexibility and mucoadhesivity showed that they could potentially adhere to the ocular surface for prolonged periods. The drug loaded films showed swelling capacity which was greater than 300% of their original weight. The physical form of chloramphenicol within the films was amorphous (DSC and XRD) whilst in vitro drug dissolution showed sustained drug release from the films for four hours, before complete erosion. The chloramphenicol loaded films represent a potential means of treating common eye infections

    Study of intermediate velocity products in the Ar+Ni collisions between 52 and 95 A.MeV

    Intermediate velocity products in Ar+Ni collisions from 52 to 95 A.MeV are studied in an experiment performed at the GANIL facility with the 4π\pi multidetector INDRA. It is shown that these emissions cannot be explained by statistical decays of the quasi-projectile and the quasi-target in complete equilibrium. Three methods are used to isolate and characterize intermediate velocity products. The total mass of these products increases with the violence of the collision and reaches a large fraction of the system mass in mid-central collisions. This mass is found independent of the incident energy, but strongly dependent on the geometry of the collision. Finally it is shown that the kinematical characteristics of intermediate velocity products are weakly dependent on the experimental impact parameter, but strongly dependent on the incident energy. The observed trends are consistent with a participant-spectator like scenario or with neck emissions and/or break-up.Comment: 37 pages, 13 figure

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
