    Real-time portable system for fabric defect detection using an ARM processor

    Modern textile industry seeks to produce textiles as little defective as possible since the presence of defects can decrease the final price of products from 45% to 65%. Automated visual inspection (AVI) systems, based on image analysis, have become an important alternative for replacing traditional inspections methods that involve human tasks. An AVI system gives the advantage of repeatability when implemented within defined constrains, offering more objective and reliable results for particular tasks than human inspection. Costs of automated inspection systems development can be reduced using modular solutions with embedded systems, in which an important advantage is the low energy consumption. Among the possibilities for developing embedded systems, the ARM processor has been explored for acquisition, monitoring and simple signal processing tasks. In a recent approach we have explored the use of the ARM processor for defects detection by implementing the wavelet transform. However, the computation speed of the preprocessing was not yet sufficient for real time applications. In this approach we significantly improve the preprocessing speed of the algorithm, by optimizing matrix operations, such that it is adequate for a real time application. The system was tested for defect detection using different defect types. The paper is focused in giving a detailed description of the basis of the algorithm implementation, such that other algorithms may use of the ARM operations for fast implementations

    The effect of interpolation methods in temperature and salinity trends in the Western Mediterranean

    Temperature and salinity data in the historical record are scarce and unevenly distributed in space and time and the estimation of linear trends is sensitive to different factors. In the case of the Western Mediterranean, previous works have studied the sensitivity of these trends to the use of bathythermograph data, the averaging methods or the way in which gaps in time series are dealt with. In this work, a new factor is analysed: the effect of data interpolation. Temperature and salinity time series are generated averaging existing data over certain geographical areas and also by means of interpolation. Linear trends from both types of time series are compared. There are some differences between both estimations for some layers and geographical areas, while in other cases the results are consistent. Those results which do not depend on the use of interpolated or non-interpolated data, neither are influenced by data analysis methods can be considered as robust ones. Those results influenced by the interpolation process or the factors analysed in previous sensitivity tests are not considered as robust results

    111 p.Los alumnos del Campus Lircay de la Universidad de Talca tienen acceso a un mercado habitacional que cuenta con mĂșltiples alternativas, pudiendo elegir de acuerdo a la situaciĂłn socioeconĂłmica que estos poseen. Los alumnos de escasos recursos ven restringidos los servicios a los que pueden acceder, satisfaciendo en la mayorĂ­a de las ocasiones, solamente la necesidad bĂĄsica de vivienda. La necesidad de otorgar a los alumnos matriculados en dicha casa de estudios una mejor calidad de vida, permitiĂ©ndoles administrar en forma optima su tiempo y dinero justifica la evaluaciĂłn econĂłmica de una Residencia Universitaria (RU) en el interior del Campus Lircay de la Universidad de Talca. Con el objetivo de diseñar una residencia que satisfaga las necesidades de los alumnos, se realice) un estudio de mercado que permitiĂł conocer los atributos considerados importantes para estos, siendo los mas relevantes el precio que estarĂ­an dispuestos a pagar y si se cambiarĂ­an a dicha residencia, ademĂĄs de la capacidad y cantidad de servicios disponibles. La Residencia Universitaria cuenta con aproximadamente 1.800 m2 construidos, dividiĂ©ndose en tres pisos y dos mĂłdulos. La planta baja esta destinada a ofrecer a los alumnos los servicios que generan valor agregado al arriendo de habitaciones, como son sala de estudio, sala de multimedia y comedores, entre otros. En los pisos superiores estĂĄn ubicadas las habitaciones, que cuentan con todo lo necesario para que los alumnos vivan en forma cĂłmoda. La evaluaciĂłn se realiz6 por medio del Valor Actual Neto (VAN), usando como complemento a la valoraciĂłn, la Tasa Interna de Retorno (TIR) y el Periodo de RecuperaciĂłn del Capital (PRC). Para esto se consideraron tres escenarios posibles con el fin de abarcar una mayor cantidad de posibilidades. El primero de ellos, denominado escenario optimista, considera la ocupaciĂłn total de la RU, incluso en los meses de verano (Enero y Febrero). El segundo o escenario probable, considera una ocupaciĂłn de la RU del 85% de su capacidad total. Y el tercero de ellos, denominado escenario pesimista, contempla la ocupaciĂłn de la RU solo en un 60%. Por lo tanto, se puede concluir que, de los tres escenarios evaluados solo dos de ellos resultan rentables, siendo el proyecto factible de realizar. En el primer escenario (optimista) la inversiĂłn se recupera en el sĂ©ptimo año de operaciĂłn y en el escenario probable, la recuperaciĂłn se produce en el dĂ©cimo año

    Interannual variability of the early summer circulation around the Balearic Islands: driving factors and potential effects on the marine ecosystem

    Six summer surveys conducted from 2001 to 2005 and in 2012 by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) reveal that the hydrographic early summer scenarios around the Balearic Islands are related to the winter atmospheric forcing in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. The Balearic Islands (western Mediterranean Sea) lie at the transition between the southern, fresher, newly arrived Atlantic Waters (AW) and the northern, saltier, resident AW. The meridional position of the salinity driven oceanic density front separating the new from the resident AW is determined by the presence/absence of Western Intermediate Water (WIW) in the Mallorca and Ibiza channels. When WIW is present in the channels, the oceanic density front is found either at the south of the islands, or along the Emil Boudot escarpment. In contrast, when WIW is absent, new AW progresses northwards crossing the Ibiza channel and/or the Mallorca channel. In this later scenario, the oceanic density front is closer to the Balearic Islands. A good correspondence exists between standardized winter air temperature anomaly in the Gulf ofLions and the presence of WIW in the channels. We discuss the use of a regional climatic index based on these parameters to forecast in a first-order approach the position of the oceanic front, as it is expected to have high impact on the regional marine ecosystem.Post-print

    Multimessenger Gamma-Ray and Neutrino Coincidence Alerts using HAWC and IceCube sub-threshold Data

    The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) and IceCube observatories, through the Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network (AMON) framework, have developed a multimessenger joint search for extragalactic astrophysical sources. This analysis looks for sources that emit both cosmic neutrinos and gamma rays that are produced in photo-hadronic or hadronic interactions. The AMON system is running continuously, receiving sub-threshold data (i.e. data that is not suited on its own to do astrophysical searches) from HAWC and IceCube, and combining them in real-time. We present here the analysis algorithm, as well as results from archival data collected between June 2015 and August 2018, with a total live-time of 3.0 years. During this period we found two coincident events that have a false alarm rate (FAR) of <1<1 coincidence per year, consistent with the background expectations. The real-time implementation of the analysis in the AMON system began on November 20th, 2019, and issues alerts to the community through the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network with a FAR threshold of <4<4 coincidences per year.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 3 table

    Multi-messenger observations of a binary neutron star merger

    On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of ~1.7 s with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of 40+8-8 Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 Mo. An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at ~40 Mpc) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One- Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ~10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transient’s position ~9 and ~16 days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta

    Multimessenger NuEM Alerts with AMON

    The Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network (AMON), has developed a real-time multi-messenger alert system. The system performs coincidence analyses of datasets from gamma-ray and neutrino detectors, making the Neutrino-Electromagnetic (NuEM) alert channel. For these analyses, AMON takes advantage of sub-threshold events, i.e., events that by themselves are not significant in the individual detectors. The main purpose of this channel is to search for gamma-ray counterparts of neutrino events. We will describe the different analyses that make-up this channel and present a selection of recent results
