NaIrO3 - A pentavalent post-perovskite
Sodium iridium(V) oxide, NaIrO3, was synthesized by a high pressure solid
state method and recovered to ambient conditions. It is found to be
isostructural with CaIrO3, the much-studied structural analogue of the
high-pressure post-perovskite phase of MgSiO3. Among the oxide
post-perovskites, NaIrO3 is the first example with a pentavalent cation. The
structure consists of layers of corner- and edge-sharing IrO6 octahedra
separated by layers of NaO8 bicapped trigonal prisms. NaIrO3 shows no magnetic
ordering and resistivity measurements show non-metallic behavior. The crystal
structure, electrical and magnetic properties are discussed and compared to
known post-perovskites and pentavalent perovskite metal oxides.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures. Submitted to Journal of Solid State Chemistr
Periodic Orbits and Escapes in Dynamical Systems
We study the periodic orbits and the escapes in two different dynamical
systems, namely (1) a classical system of two coupled oscillators, and (2) the
Manko-Novikov metric (1992) which is a perturbation of the Kerr metric (a
general relativistic system). We find their simple periodic orbits, their
characteristics and their stability. Then we find their ordered and chaotic
domains. As the energy goes beyond the escape energy, most chaotic orbits
escape. In the first case we consider escapes to infinity, while in the second
case we emphasize escapes to the central "bumpy" black hole. When the energy
reaches its escape value a particular family of periodic orbits reaches an
infinite period and then the family disappears (the orbit escapes). As this
family approaches termination it undergoes an infinity of equal period and
double period bifurcations at transitions from stability to instability and
vice versa. The bifurcating families continue to exist beyond the escape
energy. We study the forms of the phase space for various energies, and the
statistics of the chaotic and escaping orbits. The proportion of these orbits

Temperature Dependence of Low-Lying Electronic Excitations of LaMnO_3
We report on the optical properties of undoped single crystal LaMnO_3, the
parent compound of the colossal magneto-resistive manganites. Near-Normal
incidence reflectance measurements are reported in the frequency range of
20-50,000 cm-1 and in the temperature range 10-300 K. The optical conductivity,
s_1(w), is derived by performing a Kramers-Kronig analysis of the reflectance
data. The far-infrared spectrum of s_1(w) displays the infrared active optical
phonons. We observe a shift of several of the phonon to high frequencies as the
temperature is lowered through the Neel temperature of the sample (T_N = 137
K). The high-frequency s_1(w) is characterized by the onset of absorption near
1.5 eV. This energy has been identified as the threshold for optical
transitions across the Jahn-Teller split e_g levels. The spectral weight of
this feature increases in the low-temperature state. This implies a transfer of
spectral weight from the UV to the visible associated with the paramagnetic to
antiferromagnetic state. We discuss the results in terms of the double exchange
processes that affect the optical processes in this magnetic material.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous

TERT promoter mutations are highly recurrent in SHH subgroup medulloblastoma
Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter mutations were recently shown to drive telomerase activity in various cancer types, including medulloblastoma. However, the clinical and biological implications of TERT mutations in medulloblastoma have not been described. Hence, we sought to describe these mutations and their impact in a subgroup-specific manner. We analyzed the TERT promoter by direct sequencing and genotyping in 466 medulloblastomas. The mutational distributions were determined according to subgroup affiliation, demographics, and clinical, prognostic, and molecular features. Integrated genomics approaches were used to identify specific somatic copy number alterations in TERT promoter-mutated and wild-type tumors. Overall, TERT promoter mutations were identified in 21 % of medulloblastomas. Strikingly, the highest frequencies of TERT mutations were observed in SHH (83 %; 55/66) and WNT (31 %; 4/13) medulloblastomas derived from adult patients. The BRCA2 c.68-7T > A variant is not pathogenic : A model for clinical calibration of spliceogenicity
Although the spliceogenic nature of the BRCA2 c.68-7T > A variant has been demonstrated, its association with cancer risk remains controversial. In this study, we accurately quantified by real-time PCR and digital PCR (dPCR), the BRCA2 isoforms retaining or missing exon 3. In addition, the combined odds ratio for causality of the variant was estimated using genetic and clinical data, and its associated cancer risk was estimated by case-control analysis in 83,636 individuals. Co-occurrence in trans with pathogenic BRCA2 variants was assessed in 5,382 families. Exon 3 exclusion rate was 4.5-fold higher in variant carriers (13%) than controls (3%), indicating an exclusion rate for the c.68-7T > A allele of approximately 20%. The posterior probability of pathogenicity was 7.44x10(-115). There was neither evidence for increased risk of breast cancer (OR 1.03; 95% CI 0.86-1.24) nor for a deleterious effect of the variant when co-occurring with pathogenic variants. Our data provide for the first time robust evidence of the nonpathogenicity of the BRCA2 c.68-7T > A. Genetic and quantitative transcript analyses together inform the threshold for the ratio between functional and altered BRCA2 isoforms compatible with normal cell function. These findings might be exploited to assess the relevance for cancer risk of other BRCA2 spliceogenic variants.Peer reviewe
