    Influência da folga financeira no desempenho econômico de empresas industriais brasileiras e mexicanas

    This study aims to verify the influence of the financial slack on the economic performance of Brazilian and Mexican industrial companies. We conducted a descriptive, documentary, and quantitative research. The sample included 152 companies, 107 Brazilian and 45 Mexican, studied from 1996 to 2014. The findings suggest, through linear regressions, that the slack provides an improvement (positive relation) in corporate performance. However, quadratic regressions point out in both contexts studied, with superior explanatory power, that the relation between slack and performance is nonlinear. This fact confirms there is an optimal point of financial slack that maximizes the corporate results, being different for Brazilian and Mexican companies. These findings should be noticed by managers in order to better manage the resources available in organizations.Este estudio busca verificar la influencia de la holgura financiera en el rendimiento económico de empresas industriales brasileñas y mexi- canas. Se realizó una investigación descriptiva, documental y cuantitativa que incluyó una muestra de 152 empresas, 107 brasileñas y 45 mexicanas que fueron estudiadas entre 1996 y 2014. Los hallazgos indican, a través de regresiones lineales, que la holgura proporciona una mejora (relación positiva) en el rendimiento corporativo. Sin embargo, regresiones cuadráticas señalan en los dos contextos estudiados, con poder explicativo superior, que la relación entre holgura y rendimiento no es lineal. Este hecho confirma que hay un punto óptimo de holgura financiera que maximiza los resultados corporativos, el cual es diferente para las empresas brasileñas y las mexicanas. Estos hallazgos deberían ser tenidos en cuenta por los administradores con el fin de administrar mejor los recursos disponibles en las organizaciones.Este estudo objetiva verificar a influência da folga financeira no desempenho econômico de empresas industriais brasileiras e mexicanas. Realizou-se pesquisa descritiva, documental e quantitativa, com amostra de 152 empresas, sendo 107 brasileiras e 45 mexicanas, investigadas entre 1996 e 2014. Os resultados encontrados através de regressões lineares direcionam que a folga proporciona melhora (relação positiva) na performance corporativa. Todavia, as regressões quadráticas apontam, em ambos os contextos estudados, com poder explicativo superior, que a relação entre folga e desempenho é não linear. Tal fato confirma que há um ponto ótimo de folga financeira que maximiza os resultados corporativos, sendo diferente para empresas brasileiras e mexicanas. Tais achados devem ser observados por gestores visando a melhor gestão dos recursos disponíveis nas organizações

    he composition, strain and surface morphology of (0001)InGaN layers are investigated as a function of growth temperature (460–645 °C) and impinging In flux. Three different growth regimes: nitrogen-rich, metal-rich and intermediate metal-rich, are clearly identified and found to be in correlation with surface morphology and strain relaxation. Best epilayers’ quality is obtained when growing under intermediate metal-rich conditions, with 1–2 monolayers thick In ad-coverage. For a given In flux, the In incorporation decreases with increasing growth temperature due to InN thermal decomposition that follows an Arrhenius behavior with 1.84±0.12 eV activation energy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The growing consensus that most valuable data source for biomedical discoveries is derived from human samples is clearly reflected in the growing number of translational medicine and translational sciences departments across pharma as well as academic and government supported initiatives such as Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) in the US and the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of EU with emphasis on translating research for human health.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The pharmaceutical companies of Johnson and Johnson have established translational and biomarker departments and implemented an effective knowledge management framework including building a data warehouse and the associated data mining applications. The implemented resource is built from open source systems such as i2b2 and GenePattern.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The system has been deployed across multiple therapeutic areas within the pharmaceutical companies of Johnson and Johnsons and being used actively to integrate and mine internal and public data to support drug discovery and development decisions such as indication selection and trial design in a translational medicine setting. Our results show that the established system allows scientist to quickly re-validate hypotheses or generate new ones with the use of an intuitive graphical interface.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The implemented resource can serve as the basis of precompetitive sharing and mining of studies involving samples from human subjects thus enhancing our understanding of human biology and pathophysiology and ultimately leading to more effective treatment of diseases which represent unmet medical needs.</p

    Multiplex primer prediction software for divergent targets

    We describe a Multiplex Primer Prediction (MPP) algorithm to build multiplex compatible primer sets to amplify all members of large, diverse and unalignable sets of target sequences. The MPP algorithm is scalable to larger target sets than other available software, and it does not require a multiple sequence alignment. We applied it to questions in viral detection, and demonstrated that there are no universally conserved priming sequences among viruses and that it could require an unfeasibly large number of primers (∼3700 18-mers or ∼2000 10-mers) to generate amplicons from all sequenced viruses. We then designed primer sets separately for each viral family, and for several diverse species such as foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) segments of influenza A virus, Norwalk virus, and HIV-1. We empirically demonstrated the application of the software with a multiplex set of 16 short (10 nt) primers designed to amplify the Poxviridae family to produce a specific amplicon from vaccinia virus

    Draft genome of an iconic Red Sea reef fish, the blacktail butterflyfish (Chaetodon austriacus): Current status and its characteristics

    Butterflyfish are among the most iconic of the coral reef fishes and represent a model system to study general questions of biogeography, evolution and population genetics. We assembled and annotated the genome sequence of the blacktail butterflyfish (Chaetodon austriacus), an Arabian region endemic species that is reliant on coral reefs for food and shelter. Using available bony fish (superclass Osteichthyes) genomes as a reference, a total of 28 926 high-quality protein-coding genes were predicted from 13 967 assembled scaffolds. The quality and completeness of the draft genome of C. austriacus suggest that it has the potential to serve as a resource for studies on the co-evolution of reef fish adaptations to the unique Red Sea environment, as well as a comparison of gene sequences between closely related congeneric species of butterflyfish distributed more broadly across the tropical Indo-Pacific

    BK Channels Regulate Spontaneous Action Potential Rhythmicity in the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus

    Background: Circadian (,24 hr) rhythms are generated by the central pacemaker localized to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus. Although the basis for intrinsic rhythmicity is generally understood to rely on transcription factors encoded by ‘‘clock genes’’, less is known about the daily regulation of SCN neuronal activity patterns that communicate a circadian time signal to downstream behaviors and physiological systems. Action potentials in the SCN are necessary for the circadian timing of behavior, and individual SCN neurons modulate their spontaneous firing rate (SFR) over the daily cycle, suggesting that the circadian patterning of neuronal activity is necessary for normal behavioral rhythm expression. The BK K + channel plays an important role in suppressing spontaneous firing at night in SCN neurons. Deletion of the Kcnma1 gene, encoding the BK channel, causes degradation of circadian behavioral and physiological rhythms. Methodology/Principal Findings: To test the hypothesis that loss of robust behavioral rhythmicity in Kcnma1 2/2 mice is due to the disruption of SFR rhythms in the SCN, we used multi-electrode arrays to record extracellular action potentials from acute wild-type (WT) and Kcnma1 2/2 slices. Patterns of activity in the SCN were tracked simultaneously for up to 3 days, and the phase, period, and synchronization of SFR rhythms were examined. Loss of BK channels increased arrhythmicity but also altered the amplitude and period of rhythmic activity. Unexpectedly, Kcnma1 2/2 SCNs showed increased variability in the timing of the daily SFR peak

    Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.     Search for chargino-neutralino production with mass splittings near the electroweak scale in three-lepton final states in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13  TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb−1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015–2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV

    Identification of species by multiplex analysis of variable-length sequences

    The quest for a universal and efficient method of identifying species has been a longstanding challenge in biology. Here, we show that accurate identification of species in all domains of life can be accomplished by multiplex analysis of variable-length sequences containing multiple insertion/deletion variants. The new method, called SPInDel, is able to discriminate 93.3% of eukaryotic species from 18 taxonomic groups. We also demonstrate that the identification of prokaryotic and viral species with numeric profiles of fragment lengths is generally straightforward. A computational platform is presented to facilitate the planning of projects and includes a large data set with nearly 1800 numeric profiles for species in all domains of life (1556 for eukaryotes, 105 for prokaryotes and 130 for viruses). Finally, a SPInDel profiling kit for discrimination of 10 mammalian species was successfully validated on highly processed food products with species mixtures and proved to be easily adaptable to multiple screening procedures routinely used in molecular biology laboratories. These results suggest that SPInDel is a reliable and cost-effective method for broad-spectrum species identification that is appropriate for use in suboptimal samples and is amenable to different high-throughput genotyping platforms without the need for DNA sequencing
