This summary will share some of the highlights from the study conducted from Winter 2000 through Spring 2002 by Visual Understanding in Education with the support of the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), Artpace, and the San Antonio Museum of Art. The study was designed to measure the impact of the multi-year Visual Thinking Strategies(VTS) program on students in gradesthreethrough five.VTS is a student-centered curriculum in which students examine and discuss worksof art, prompted by questions selected to support careful, evidentiary looking. The three basic VTS questions are: "What's going on in this picture?" "What do you see that makes you say that?" when an interpretative comment is made, and "What more can we find?" Classroom teachers facilitate the discussions by asking the questions, pointing, paraphrasing and linking responses. There are ten lessons each year, the last of which is a museum visit.Data was collected twice a year for three years, before the first yearly VTS lesson and after the last VTS lesson of the year, to follow the growth of aesthetic and more general critical thinking skills of an initialsample of 25 experimental and 25 control students. Pre- and post-VTS aesthetic development interviews(ADIs), demographic questionnaires, museum biographies, material object interviews(MOIs), and writing samples were collected from experimental and control groups

Effects of immobilization on articular cartilage: Autohistoradiographic findings with S35

The effect of immobilization on the articular cartilage of rabbits was studied by light microscope. The knee joint of each rabbit was immobilized in a plaster in a position midway between flexion and extension for a 10 to 120 days period. Degenerative changes in the articular cartilage of increasing severity were observed. The fixation of the labeled SO4 by cartilage cells was decreased in advanced immobilization

Patient Perceptions of Clinician\u27s Empathy: Measurement and Psychometrics.

The prominence of reciprocal understanding in patient–doctor empathic engagement implies that patient perception of clinician’s empathy has an important role in the assessment of the patient–clinician relationship. In response to a need for an assessment tool to measure patient’s views of clinician empathy, we developed a brief (5-item) instrument, the Jefferson Scale of Patient Perceptions of Physician Empathy (JSPPPE). This review article reports evidence in support of the validity and reliability of the JSPPPE

Single-image measurements of monochromatic subdiffraction dimolecular separations

Measuring subdiffraction separations between single fluorescent particles is important for biological, nano-, and medical-technology studies. Major challenges include (i) measuring changing molecular separations with high temporal resolution while (ii) using identical fluorescent labels. Here we report a method that measures subdiffraction separations between two identical fluorophores by using a single image of milliseconds exposure time and a standard single-molecule fluorescent imaging setup. The fluorophores do not need to be bleached and the separations can be measured down to 40 nm with nanometer precision. The method is called single-molecule image deconvolution -- SMID, and in this article it measures the standard deviation (SD) of Gaussian-approximated combined fluorescent intensity profiles of the two subdiffraction-separated fluorophores. This study enables measurements of (i) subdiffraction dimolecular separations using a single image, lifting the temporal resolution of seconds to milliseconds, while (ii) using identical fluorophores. The single-image nature of this dimer separation study makes it a single-image molecular analysis (SIMA) study.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
