First evidence of crayfish plaque agent in populations of the marbled caryfish (Procambarus fallux forma virginalis)
The introduction of non-indigenous species and associated diseases can cause declines in indigenous flora and fauna and threaten local biodiversity. The crayfish plague pathogen (Aphanomyces astaci), carried and transmitted by latent infected North American crayfish, can lead to high mortalities in indigenous European crayfish populations. Although the parthenogenetic marbled crayfish (Procambarus fallax (Hagen, 1870) forma virginalis) is common in the aquarium trade and has established wild populations in Europe, its carrier status is still unknown. This study investigated one captive and three established wild-living marbled crayfish populations for an infection with the crayfish plague pathogen applying real-time PCR. We demonstrate that captive, as well as two wild marbled crayfish populations were infected by A. astaci. Although infection status in laboratory kept specimens reached high levels, marbled crayfish showed no obviously plague-related mortality. Furthermore, sequence analysis revealed that captive crayfish carried the A. astaci genotype Pc, which has earlier been isolated from the North American red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). The results indicate that due to its positive carrier status marbled crayfish poses a greater threat to local biodiversity in Europe than considered until now
Ultrafast carrier relaxation in GaN, In_(0.05)Ga_(0.95)N and an In_(0.05)Ga_(0.95)/In_(0.15)Ga_(0.85)N Multiple Quantum Well
Room temperature, wavelength non-degenerate ultrafast pump/probe measurements
were performed on GaN and InGaN epilayers and an InGaN multiple quantum well
structure. Carrier relaxation dynamics were investigated as a function of
excitation wavelength and intensity. Spectrally-resolved sub-picosecond
relaxation due to carrier redistribution and QW capture was found to depend
sensitively on the wavelength of pump excitation. Moreover, for pump
intensities above a threshold of 100 microJ/cm2, all samples demonstrated an
additional emission feature arising from stimulated emission (SE). SE is
evidenced as accelerated relaxation (< 10 ps) in the pump-probe data,
fundamentally altering the re-distribution of carriers. Once SE and carrier
redistribution is completed, a slower relaxation of up to 1 ns for GaN and
InGaN epilayers, and 660 ps for the MQW sample, indicates carrier recombination
through spontaneous emission.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
Environmental pressure from the 2014â15 eruption of BĂĄrĂ°arbunga volcano, Iceland
The effusive six months long 2014-2015 BĂĄrĂ°arbunga eruption (31 August-27 February) was the largest in Iceland for more than 200 years, producing 1.6 ± 0.3 km3 of lava. The total SO2 emission was 11 ± 5 Mt, more than the amount emitted from Europe in 2011. The ground level concentration of SO2 exceeded the 350 ÎŒg mâ3 hourly average health limit over much of Iceland for days to weeks. Anomalously high SO2 concentrations were also measured at several locations in Europe in September. The lowest pH of fresh snowmelt at the eruption site was 3.3, and 3.2 in precipitation 105 km away from the source. Elevated dissolved H2SO4, HCl, HF, and metal concentrations were measured in snow and precipitation. Environmental pressures from the eruption and impacts on populated areas were reduced by its remoteness, timing, and the weather. The anticipated primary environmental pressure is on the surface

XANES evidence for sulphur speciation in Mn-, Ni- and W-bearing silicate melts

NiO, or WO3 systems were used to investigate sulphur speciation in silicate glasses.
S K-edge spectra comprised a composite peak with an edge between 2470 and 2471.4 eV,
which was attributed to S2-, and a peak of variable height with an edge at 2480.2 to 2480.8
eV, which is consistent with the presence of S6+. The latter peak was attributed to sample
oxidation during sample storage. W-rich samples produced an additional lower energy peak
at 2469.8 eV that is tentatively attributed to the existence of S 3p orbitals hybridised with
the W 5d states.
Deconvolution of the composite peak reveals that the composite peak for Mn-bearing
samples fits well to a model that combines three Lorentzians at 2473.1, 2474.9 and 2476.2
eV with an arctan edge step. The composite peak for W-bearing samples fits well to the
same combination plus an additional Lorentzian at 2469.8 eV. The ratio of the proportions
of the signal accounted for by peaks at 2473.1eV and 2476.2eV correlates with Mn:Ca molar
ratios, but not with W:Ca ratios. Spectra from Ni-bearing samples were qualitatively similar
but S levels were too low to allow robust quantification of peak components. Some part of
the signal accounted for by the 2473.1 eV peak was therefore taken to record the formation
of Mn-S melt species, while the 2469.8 peak is interpreted to record the formation of W-S
melt species. The 2474.9 eV and 2476.2 eV peaks were taken to be dominated by Ca-S
and Mg-S interactions. However, a 1:1 relationship between peak components and specific
energy transitions is not proposed. This interpretation is consistent with known features of
the lower parts of the conduction band in monosulphide minerals and indicates a similarity
between sulphur species in the melts and the monosulphides. S XANES spectra cannot be
reproduced by a combination of the spectra of the component element monosulphides.
Mn-, W- and Ni- XANES and EXAFS for synthetic glasses without sulphide exsolution
did not show any sensitivity to the presence of sulphur, which is unsurprising as S:O ratios
were sufficiently low that metals would be mostly co-ordinated by O. Mn EXAFS spectra
were consistent with divalent Mn in 5 co-ordinated Mn-O melt species. W spectra were
consistent with tetrahedrally co-ordinated hexavalent W, most likely in scheelite-like melt
species, and Ni spectra were consistent with [4] co-ordinated divalent Ni. These results
indicate lower coordinations for bothWand Ni than those inferred by some previous workers.
Cation coordination may reflect the proportion of non-bridging oxygens, which is lower in
the Ca-rich and Al-poor samples investigated here than for previous studies.This work was performed with

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in âs = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,

Understanding 'non-genetic' inheritance : insights from molecular-evolutionary crosstalk
The idea for this paper was initially proposed by I.A.-K. and was further developed by all authors in a workshop generously funded by grant No 789240 from the European Research Council (ERC) to F.J.W. S.E.S. acknowledges support from Wesleyan University and The John Templeton Foundation.Understanding the evolutionary and ecological roles of 'non-genetic' inheritance (NGI) is daunting due to the complexity and diversity of epigenetic mechanisms. We draw on insights from molecular and evolutionary biology perspectives to identify three general features of 'non-genetic' inheritance systems: (i) they are functionally interdependent with, rather than separate from, DNA sequence; (ii) precise mechanisms vary phylogenetically and operationally; and (iii) epigenetic elements are probabilistic, interactive regulatory factors and not deterministic 'epialleles' with defined genomic locations and effects. We discuss each of these features and offer recommendations for future empirical and theoretical research that implements a unifying inherited gene regulation (IGR) approach to studies of 'non-genetic' inheritance.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
On complex-valued 2D eikonals. Part four: continuation past a caustic
Theories of monochromatic high-frequency electromagnetic fields have been
designed by Felsen, Kravtsov, Ludwig and others with a view to portraying
features that are ignored by geometrical optics. These theories have recourse
to eikonals that encode information on both phase and amplitude -- in other
words, are complex-valued. The following mathematical principle is ultimately
behind the scenes: any geometric optical eikonal, which conventional rays
engender in some light region, can be consistently continued in the shadow
region beyond the relevant caustic, provided an alternative eikonal, endowed
with a non-zero imaginary part, comes on stage. In the present paper we explore
such a principle in dimension We investigate a partial differential system
that governs the real and the imaginary parts of complex-valued two-dimensional
eikonals, and an initial value problem germane to it. In physical terms, the
problem in hand amounts to detecting waves that rise beside, but on the dark
side of, a given caustic. In mathematical terms, such a problem shows two main
peculiarities: on the one hand, degeneracy near the initial curve; on the other
hand, ill-posedness in the sense of Hadamard. We benefit from using a number of
technical devices: hodograph transforms, artificial viscosity, and a suitable
discretization. Approximate differentiation and a parody of the
quasi-reversibility method are also involved. We offer an algorithm that
restrains instability and produces effective approximate solutions.Comment: 48 pages, 15 figure
