Analysing the elasticity difference tensor of general relativity
The elasticity difference tensor, used in [1] to describe elasticity
properties of a continuous medium filling a space-time, is here analysed from
the point of view of the space-time connection. Principal directions associated
with this tensor are compared with eigendirections of the material metric.
Examples concerning spherically symmetric and axially symmetric space-times are

Sociodemographic Factors Associated with AIDS Knowledge in a Random Sample of University Students
A telephone survey was used to assess knowledge of the transmission, prevalence, and infectivity of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and the safety of casual contact among 214 randomly selected university students. Males were more knowledgeable than females overall (odds ratio [OR], men/women = 4.8). Although most students understood the dangers of unprotected sex and intravenous needle sharing, up to 30% believed some kinds of casual contact (e.g., shared eating utensils) can transmit AIDS. Older students (≥ 23 yrs) were more knowledgeable than those 17 to 19 years old about the safety of casual contact (OR = 3.8). Students are in need of education programs that stress the ways AIDS is not transmitted. Intensification of cattle ranching production systems: Socioeconomic and environmental synergies and risks in Brazil
Intensification of Brazilian cattle ranching systems has attracted both national and international attention due to its direct relation with Amazon deforestation on the one hand and increasing demand of the global population for meat on the other. Since Brazilian cattle ranching is predominantly pasture-based, we particularly focus on pasture management. We summarize the most recurrent opportunities and risks associated with pasture intensification that are brought up within scientific and political dialogues, and discuss them within the Brazilian context. We argue that sustainable intensification of pasturelands in Brazil is a viable way to increase agricultural output while simultaneously sparing land for nature. Since environmental degradation is often associated with low-yield extensive systems in Brazil, it is possible to obtain higher yields, while reversing degradation, by adopting practices like rotational grazing, incorporation of legumes and integrated crop-livestock-forestry systems. Technical assistance is however essential, particularly for small- and medium-scale farmers. Sound complementary policies and good governance must accompany these measures so that a ‘rebound effect’ does not lead to increased deforestation and other adverse social and environmental impacts. It is also important that animal welfare is not compromised. Although the discussion is presented with respect to Brazil, some aspects are relevant to other developing countries

Boundary conditions of workplace coaching outcomes
Purpose
In order to address the need for greater understanding about the occupational and practice determinants of effective workplace coaching, this study examines the associations of two coaching practice factors (coaching format and external versus internal coaching provision), and coachees’ job complexity with perceived outcomes from coaching.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey of 161 individuals who had received workplace coaching was conducted. Participants provided data on two outcome criteria (self-reported work well-being and personal effectiveness at work).
Findings
Analysis indicated that external coaches and blended format coaching were most strongly associated with work well-being outcomes. Our examination of interaction effects showed that coaching provided by external coaches was more strongly associated with outcomes for individuals working in the most complex job roles.
Originality/value
The original contribution of our findings are in terms of the implications for coaches, managers and HR practitioners by showing how coaching can be implemented differentially and most effectively based on desired outcome criteria and features of coachees’ job situations
Effects of decoherence and errors on Bell-inequality violation
We study optimal conditions for violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt
form of the Bell inequality in the presence of decoherence and measurement
errors. We obtain all detector configurations providing the maximal Bell
inequality violation for a general (pure or mixed) state. We consider local
decoherence which includes energy relaxation at the zero temperature and
arbitrary dephasing. Conditions for the maximal Bell-inequality violation in
the presence of decoherence are analyzed both analytically and numerically for
the general case and for a number of important special cases. Combined effects
of measurement errors and decoherence are also discussed.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Measurement of the open-charm contribution to the diffractive proton structure function
Production of D*+/-(2010) mesons in diffractive deep inelastic scattering has
been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of
82 pb^{-1}. Diffractive events were identified by the presence of a large
rapidity gap in the final state. Differential cross sections have been measured
in the kinematic region 1.5 < Q^2 < 200 GeV^2, 0.02 < y < 0.7, x_{IP} < 0.035,
beta 1.5 GeV and |\eta(D*+/-)| < 1.5. The measured cross
sections are compared to theoretical predictions. The results are presented in
terms of the open-charm contribution to the diffractive proton structure
function. The data demonstrate a strong sensitivity to the diffractive parton

Onset of Perturbative Color Opacity at Small x and Upsilon Coherent Photoproduction off heavy nuclei at LHC
We study photon-induced coherent production of Upsilon in ultraperipheral
heavy ion collisions at LHC and demonstrate that the counting rates will be
sufficient to measure nuclear shadowing of generalized gluon distributions.
This will establish the transition from the regime of color transparency to the
regime of perturbative color opacity in an unambiguous way. We argue that such
measurements will provide the possibility to investigate the interaction of
ultra-small color dipoles with nuclei in QCD at large energies, which are
beyond the reach of the electron-nucleon (nucleus) colliders, and will
unambiguously discriminate between the leading twist and higher twist scenarios
of gluon nuclear shadowing.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
