    C-reactive protein exerts angiogenic effects on vascular endothelial cells and modulates associated signalling pathways and gene expression

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Formation of haemorrhagic neovessels in the intima of developing atherosclerotic plaques is thought to significantly contribute to plaque instability resulting in thrombosis. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase reactant whose expression in the vascular wall, in particular, in reactive plaque regions, and circulating levels increase in patients at high risk of cardiovascular events. Although CRP is known to induce a pro-inflammatory phenotype in endothelial cells (EC) a direct role on modulation of angiogenesis has not been established.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here, we show that CRP is a powerful inducer of angiogenesis in bovine aortic EC (BAEC) and human coronary artery EC (HCAEC). CRP, at concentrations corresponding to moderate/high risk (1–5 ÎŒg/ml), induced a significant increase in proliferation, migration and tube-like structure formation <it>in vitro </it>and stimulated blood vessel formation in the chick chorioallantoic membrane assay (CAM). CRP treated with detoxi-gel columns retained such effects. Western blotting showed that CRP increased activation of early response kinase-1/2 (ERK1/2), a key protein involved in EC mitogenesis. Furthermore, using TaqMan Low-density Arrays we identified key pro-angiogenic genes induced by CRP among them were vascular endothelial cell growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR2/KDR), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-BB), notch family transcription factors (Notch1 and Notch3), cysteine-rich angiogenic inducer 61 (CYR61/CCN1) and inhibitor of DNA binding/differentiation-1 (ID1).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This data suggests a role for CRP in direct stimulation of angiogenesis and therefore may be a mediator of neovessel formation in the intima of vulnerable plaques.</p

    Single hadron response measurement and calorimeter jet energy scale uncertainty with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    The uncertainty on the calorimeter energy response to jets of particles is derived for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). First, the calorimeter response to single isolated charged hadrons is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo simulation using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) = 900 GeV and 7 TeV collected during 2009 and 2010. Then, using the decay of K_s and Lambda particles, the calorimeter response to specific types of particles (positively and negatively charged pions, protons, and anti-protons) is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo predictions. Finally, the jet energy scale uncertainty is determined by propagating the response uncertainty for single charged and neutral particles to jets. The response uncertainty is 2-5% for central isolated hadrons and 1-3% for the final calorimeter jet energy scale.Comment: 24 pages plus author list (36 pages total), 23 figures, 1 table, submitted to European Physical Journal

    Measurement of the flavour composition of dijet events in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper describes a measurement of the flavour composition of dijet events produced in pp collisions at &#8730;s=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector. The measurement uses the full 2010 data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 39 pb−1. Six possible combinations of light, charm and bottom jets are identified in the dijet events, where the jet flavour is defined by the presence of bottom, charm or solely light flavour hadrons in the jet. Kinematic variables, based on the properties of displaced decay vertices and optimised for jet flavour identification, are used in a multidimensional template fit to measure the fractions of these dijet flavour states as functions of the leading jet transverse momentum in the range 40 GeV to 500 GeV and jet rapidity |y|&#60;2.1. The fit results agree with the predictions of leading- and next-to-leading-order calculations, with the exception of the dijet fraction composed of bottom and light flavour jets, which is underestimated by all models at large transverse jet momenta. The ability to identify jets containing two b-hadrons, originating from e.g. gluon splitting, is demonstrated. The difference between bottom jet production rates in leading and subleading jets is consistent with the next-to-leading-order predictions

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.     Search for R-parity-violating supersymmetry in events with four or more leptons in sqrt(s) =7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for new phenomena in final states with four or more leptons (electrons or muons) is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of s=7  TeV \sqrt{s}=7\;\mathrm{TeV} proton-proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in two signal regions: one that requires moderate values of missing transverse momentum and another that requires large effective mass. The results are interpreted in a simplified model of R-parity-violating supersymmetry in which a 95% CL exclusion region is set for charged wino masses up to 540 GeV. In an R-parity-violating MSUGRA/CMSSM model, values of m 1/2 up to 820 GeV are excluded for 10 < tan ÎČ < 40

    Search for high-mass resonances decaying to dilepton final states in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to search for high-mass resonances decaying to an electron-positron pair or a muon-antimuon pair. The search is sensitive to heavy neutral Zâ€Č gauge bosons, Randall-Sundrum gravitons, Z * bosons, techni-mesons, Kaluza-Klein Z/Îł bosons, and bosons predicted by Torsion models. Results are presented based on an analysis of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1 in the e + e − channel and 5.0 fb−1 in the ÎŒ + ÎŒ −channel. A Z â€Č boson with Standard Model-like couplings is excluded at 95 % confidence level for masses below 2.22 TeV. A Randall-Sundrum graviton with coupling k/MPl=0.1 is excluded at 95 % confidence level for masses below 2.16 TeV. Limits on the other models are also presented, including Technicolor and Minimal Zâ€Č Models

    Fases de ocupaciĂłn y estratigrafĂ­a del asentamiento neolĂ­tico de Les Guixeres de VilobĂ­ (Sant MartĂ­ Sarroca, Barcelona)

    El yacimiento al aire libre de Les Guixeres de VilobĂ­ (Sant MartĂ­ Sarroca, PenedĂšs, Barcelona) tiene una extensiĂłn aproximada de 2500m2 de los cuales se han excavado algo mĂĄs del 10%. Tiene la particularidad de que cuenta con una estratigrafĂ­a de 4 fases en las que se han documentado ocupaciones del NeolĂ­tico antiguo Cardial, NeolĂ­tico antiguo Epicardial, NeolĂ­tico Postcardial y NeolĂ­tico final. Estas se caracterizan por niveles arqueolĂłgicos mĂĄs o menos extensos y por la presencia de numerosas estructuras negativas: agujeros de poste, cubetas, estructuras de combustiĂłn, fosas-contenedor y silos. La fase del NeolĂ­tico Cardial no sĂłlo es la mĂĄs rica en cuanto a cantidad de material, sino que se han hallado tres ĂĄmbitos que proponemos como unidades habitacionales. Por su parte, se presentan tambiĂ©n 9 dataciones radiocarbĂłnicas (7 inĂ©ditas) que permiten inferir que las ocupaciones han sido muy continuadas en el tiempo, entre 5600-5200 cal BC para la fase A, c. 5000-4700 cal BC para la fase B, c. 4650-4450 cal BC para la fase C y c. 3350-3100 cal BC para la fase D. Para complementar estos datos cronolĂłgicos, se muestran los resultados preliminares sobre el anĂĄlisis de la cultura material del yacimiento. Por Ășltimo, estos datos son comparados con especial atenciĂłn con la informaciĂłn derivada de las estructuras de hĂĄbitat entre el NeolĂ­tico antiguo y el NeolĂ­tico final

    Search for charged Higgs bosons through the violation of lepton universality in tÂŻt events using pp collision data at ps = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    In several extensions of the Standard Model, the top quark can decay into a bottom quark and a light charged Higgs boson H+, t → bH+, in addition to the Standard Model decay t → bW. Since W bosons decay to the three lepton generations equally, while H+ may predominantly decay into Ï„Îœ, charged Higgs bosons can be searched for using the violation of lepton universality in top quark decays. The analysis in this paper is based on 4.6 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Signatures containing leptons (e or ÎŒ) and/or a hadronically decaying τ (τhad) are used. Event yield ratios between e+τhad and e+ÎŒ, as well as between ÎŒ+τhad and ÎŒ+e, final states are measured in the data and compared to predictions from simulations. This ratio-based method reduces the impact of systematic uncertainties in the analysis. No significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions is observed. With the assumption that the branching fraction B(H+ → Ï„Îœ) is 100%, upper limits in the range 3.2%–4.4% can be placed on the branching fraction B(t → bH+) for charged Higgs boson masses mH+ in the range 90–140GeV. After combination with results from a search for charged Higgs bosons in tÂŻt decays using the τhad+jets final state, upper limits on B(t → bH+) can be set in the range 0.8%–3.4%, for mH+ in the range 90–160GeV
