    Caracterización de los adolescentes involucrados en el bullying

    El presente trabajo tuvo por objetivo explorar los roles de los alumnos adolescentes que participan en episodios de acoso escolar y su relación con factores de riesgo y efectos inmediatos en el bullying. Para dar un mejor entendimiento del acoso escolar o bullying este trabajo está integrado por cinco apartados. El primer capítulo que compone el marco teórico, se refiere al Bullying; el cual trata de la definición y características del fenómeno a estudiar (acoso escolar o bullying), así tipos de violencia, roles de alumnos involucrados en el bullying así como sus consecuencias. El capítulo dos, indica la caracterización de los adolescentes involucrados en el bullying, es decir aquellas características del agresor o bully, seguidor o secuaz, partidario o agresor pasivo, espectador ajeno, defensor pasivo, defensor de la víctima, el observador, la victima pura, la victima provocadora y el profesor.El acoso escolar es un subtipo de agresión ampliamente estudiado por investigadores internacionales, este fenómeno psicológico aparece en la confluencia de los aspectos individuales, familiares, escolares y sociales del contexto en el cual se desarrolla el alumnado, quien representa diferentes roles en el círculo del acoso escolar. El tipo de agresión generada en los contextos escolares es un fenómeno estudiado principalmente en estudiantes de primaria y secundaria, identificando que impide el normal desarrollo de la enseñanza-aprendizaje generando conflictos en las relaciones interpersonales en la convivencia con alumnos y profesores, y de éstos entre sí (Mendoza, 2011), sin embargo son escasos los estudios realizados en el nivel medio superior , y por ello es necesario ampliar la investigación del bullying en este nivel educativo. El presente trabajo tuvo por objetivo explorar los roles de los alumnos adolescentes que participan en episodios de acoso escolar y su relación con factores de riesgo y efectos inmediatos en el bullying; mediante el cual participaron 860 alumnos adolescentes, de dos institutos privados incorporados a la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, (rango de edad 14 a 21 años); 447 estudiantes mujeres y 413 Hombres. Los resultados permiten identificar cinco grupos de alumnos: Espectador en bullying, Victima en bullying, Victima-Agresor en bullying, Victima en Violencia escolar y No involucrado. Se concluye que son los alumnos participantes en Victima-Agresor en bullying son los que exhiben mayores conductas de riesgo

    The Application of Electrosprayed Minocycline-Loaded PLGA For The Treatment Of Glioblastoma

    Background: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is one of the most common and aggressive forms of cancer with unfavorable prognosis due to high levels of reoccurrence with around 10,000 patients in the U.S. diagnosed each year. Despite treatment with surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, survival rate for this disease is around 21 months after diagnosis. Minocycline, a tetracycline-derivative used as an antibiotic, has also demonstrated the ability to inhibit angiogenesis or tumor growth and, presents a possible treatment option for GBM. Methods: Microparticles were fabricated by electrospraying by varying solvent type, distance, flow rate, voltage, and polymer concentration as parameters. The cytotoxicity of endothelial and glioblastoma cells was determined by an MTT assay by determining the absorbance using a spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 350 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging was used to image the samples to determine microparticle surface morphology and size via an electron beam due to microparticles being sputter coated with gold to generate an electrical conduction. Results: The electrospraying process consists of numerous parameters which directly affect the creation of microparticles. The use of the solvent methanol aids in dissolving minocycline, while the use of DCM is important for the process of electrospraying, due to its higher vapor pressure and ability to dissolve PLGA. Conclusion: In conclusion, electrospraying is a promising method to fabricate drug loaded PLGA microparticles. However, optimization is needed whenever there is a new drug of interest as it can modify the properties of the electrospray solution and result in different effects on the fabrication parameters and particles produced

    A global experiment on motivating social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Finding communication strategies that effectively motivate social distancing continues to be a global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-country, preregistered experiment (n = 25,718 from 89 countries) tested hypotheses concerning generalizable positive and negative outcomes of social distancing messages that promoted personal agency and reflective choices (i.e., an autonomy-supportive message) or were restrictive and shaming (i.e., a controlling message) compared with no message at all. Results partially supported experimental hypotheses in that the controlling message increased controlled motivation (a poorly internalized form of motivation relying on shame, guilt, and fear of social consequences) relative to no message. On the other hand, the autonomy-supportive message lowered feelings of defiance compared with the controlling message, but the controlling message did not differ from receiving no message at all. Unexpectedly, messages did not influence autonomous motivation (a highly internalized form of motivation relying on one’s core values) or behavioral intentions. Results supported hypothesized associations between people’s existing autonomous and controlled motivations and self-reported behavioral intentions to engage in social distancing. Controlled motivation was associated with more defiance and less long-term behavioral intention to engage in social distancing, whereas autonomous motivation was associated with less defiance and more short- and long-term intentions to social distance. Overall, this work highlights the potential harm of using shaming and pressuring language in public health communication, with implications for the current and future global health challenges

    Why Are Outcomes Different for Registry Patients Enrolled Prospectively and Retrospectively? Insights from the Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF).

    Background: Retrospective and prospective observational studies are designed to reflect real-world evidence on clinical practice, but can yield conflicting results. The GARFIELD-AF Registry includes both methods of enrolment and allows analysis of differences in patient characteristics and outcomes that may result. Methods and Results: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and ≥1 risk factor for stroke at diagnosis of AF were recruited either retrospectively (n = 5069) or prospectively (n = 5501) from 19 countries and then followed prospectively. The retrospectively enrolled cohort comprised patients with established AF (for a least 6, and up to 24 months before enrolment), who were identified retrospectively (and baseline and partial follow-up data were collected from the emedical records) and then followed prospectively between 0-18 months (such that the total time of follow-up was 24 months; data collection Dec-2009 and Oct-2010). In the prospectively enrolled cohort, patients with newly diagnosed AF (≤6 weeks after diagnosis) were recruited between Mar-2010 and Oct-2011 and were followed for 24 months after enrolment. Differences between the cohorts were observed in clinical characteristics, including type of AF, stroke prevention strategies, and event rates. More patients in the retrospectively identified cohort received vitamin K antagonists (62.1% vs. 53.2%) and fewer received non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (1.8% vs . 4.2%). All-cause mortality rates per 100 person-years during the prospective follow-up (starting the first study visit up to 1 year) were significantly lower in the retrospective than prospectively identified cohort (3.04 [95% CI 2.51 to 3.67] vs . 4.05 [95% CI 3.53 to 4.63]; p = 0.016). Conclusions: Interpretations of data from registries that aim to evaluate the characteristics and outcomes of patients with AF must take account of differences in registry design and the impact of recall bias and survivorship bias that is incurred with retrospective enrolment.     Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     A multi-country test of brief reappraisal interventions on emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world

    In COVID-19 Health Messaging, Loss Framing Increases Anxiety with Little-to-No Concomitant Benefits: Experimental Evidence from 84 Countries.

    The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., "If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others") or potential gains (e.g., "If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others")? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message framing on COVID-19-related judgments, intentions, and feelings. Loss- (vs. gain-) framed messages increased self-reported anxiety among participants cross-nationally with little-to-no impact on policy attitudes, behavioral intentions, or information seeking relevant to pandemic risks. These results were consistent across 84 countries, three variations of the message framing wording, and 560 data processing and analytic choices. Thus, results provide an empirical answer to a global communication question and highlight the emotional toll of loss-framed messages. Critically, this work demonstrates the importance of considering unintended affective consequences when evaluating nudge-style interventions
