Exact synthesis of single-qubit unitaries over Clifford-cyclotomic gate sets
We generalize an efficient exact synthesis algorithm for single-qubit
unitaries over the Clifford+T gate set which was presented by Kliuchnikov,
Maslov and Mosca. Their algorithm takes as input an exactly synthesizable
single-qubit unitary--one which can be expressed without error as a product of
Clifford and T gates--and outputs a sequence of gates which implements it. The
algorithm is optimal in the sense that the length of the sequence, measured by
the number of T gates, is smallest possible. In this paper, for each positive
even integer we consider the "Clifford-cyclotomic" gate set consisting of
the Clifford group plus a z-rotation by . We present an
efficient exact synthesis algorithm which outputs a decomposition using the
minimum number of z-rotations. For the Clifford+T case
the group of exactly synthesizable unitaries was shown to be equal to the group
of unitaries with entries over the ring .
We prove that this characterization holds for a handful of other small values
of but the fraction of positive even integers for which it fails to hold is

Implication of scavenger receptors in the interactions between diesel exhaust particles and immature or mature dendritic cells
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The exposure to pollutants such as diesel exhaust particles (DEP) is associated with an increased incidence of respiratory diseases. However, the mechanisms by which DEP have an effect on human health are not completely understood. In addition to their action on macrophages and airway epithelial cells, DEP also modulate the functions of dendritic cells (DC). These professional antigen-presenting cells are able to discriminate unmodified self from non-self thanks to pattern recognition receptors such as the Toll like Receptors (TLR) and Scavenger Receptors (SR). SR were originally identified by their ability to bind and internalize modified lipoproteins and microorganisms but also particles and TLR agonists. In this study, we assessed the implication of SR in the effects of DEP associated or not with TLR agonists on monocyte-derived DC (MDDC). For this, we studied the regulation of CD36, CXCL16, LOX-1, SR-A1 and SR-B1 expression on MDDC treated with DEP associated or not with TLR2, 3 and 4 ligands. Then, the capacity of SR ligands (dextran sulfate and maleylated-ovalbumin) to block the effects of DEP on the function of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated DC has been evaluated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our data demonstrate that TLR2 agonists mainly augmented CXCL16, LOX-1 and SR-B1 expression whereas DEP alone had only a weak effect. Interestingly, DEP modulated the action of TLR2 and TLR4 ligands on the expression of LOX-1 and SR-B1. Pretreatment with the SR ligand maleylated-ovalbumin but not dextran sulfate inhibited the endocytosis of DEP by MDDC. Moreover, this SR ligand blocked the effect by DEP at low dose (1 Όg/ml) on MDDC phenotype (a decrease of CD86 and HLA-DR expression) and on the secretion of CXCL10, IL-12 and TNF-α. In contrast, the decrease of IL-12 and CXCL10 secretion and the generation of oxygen metabolite induced by DEP at 10 Όg/ml was not affected by SR ligands</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results show for the first time that the modulation of DC functions by DEP implicates SR. TLR agonists upregulated SR expression in contrast to DEP. Interfering with the expression and/or the function of SR might be one way to limit the impact of DEP on lung immune response.</p
Origin of light nuclei in near earth orbit
The possible sources of light nuclei populations observed recently below the
geomagnetic cutoff by the AMS experiment are discussed in terms of nuclear
processes: fragmentation of the incoming flux of cosmic helium on atmospheric
nuclei, and nuclear coalescence from proton and helium induced reactions.

CoRoT observations of O stars: diverse origins of variability
Six O-type stars were observed continuously by the CoRoT satellite during a
34.3-day run. The unprecedented quality of the data allows us to detect even
low-amplitude stellar pulsations in some of these stars (HD 46202 and the
binaries HD 46149 and Plaskett's star). These cover both opacity-driven modes
and solar-like stochastic oscillations, both of importance to the
asteroseismological modelling of O stars. Additional effects can be seen in the
CoRoT light curves, such as binarity and rotational modulation. Some of the
hottest O-type stars (HD 46223, HD 46150 and HD 46966) are dominated by the
presence of red-noise: we speculate that this is related to a sub-surface

The XMM-LSS survey. Survey design and first results
We have designed a medium deep large area X-ray survey with XMM - the XMM
Large Scale Structure survey, XMM-LSS - with the scope of extending the
cosmological tests attempted using ROSAT cluster samples to two redshift bins
between 0<z<1 while maintaining the precision of earlier studies. Two main
goals have constrained the survey design: the evolutionary study of the
cluster-cluster correlation function and of the cluster number density. The
results are promising and, so far, in accordance with our predictions as to the
survey sensitivity and cluster number density. The feasibility of the programme
is demonstrated and further X-ray coverage is awaited in order to proceed with

PPARÎł deficiency results in reduced lung elastic recoil and abnormalities in airspace distribution
Background: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-Îł is a nuclear hormone receptor that regulates gene expression, cell proliferation and differentiation. We previously described airway epithelial cell PPARÎł deficient mice that develop airspace enlargement with decreased tissue resistance and increased lung volumes. We sought to understand the impact of airspace enlargement in conditionally targeted mice upon the physio-mechanical properties of the lung. Methods: We measured elastic recoil and its determinants, including tissue structure and surface forces. We measured alveolar number using radial alveolar counts, and airspace sizes and their distribution using computer-assisted morphometry. Results: Air vs. saline-filled pressure volume profiles demonstrated loss of lung elastic recoil in targeted mice that was contributed by both tissue components and surface tension, but was proportional to lung volume. There were no significant differences in surfactant quantity/function nor in elastin and collagen content between targeted animals and littermate controls. Importantly, radial alveolar counts were significantly reduced in the targeted animals and at 8 weeks of age there were 18% fewer alveoli with 32% more alveolar ducts. Additionally, the alveolar ducts were 19% larger in the targeted animals. Conclusions: Our data suggest that the functional abnormalities, including loss of recoil are secondary to altered force transmission due to differences in the structure of alveolar ducts, rather than changes in surfactant function or elastin or collagen content. These data further define the nature of abnormal lung maturation in the absence of airway epithelial cell PPARÎł and identify a putative genetic determinant of dysanapsis, which may serve as a precursor to chronic lung disease
Formation of dense partonic matter in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC: Experimental evaluation by the PHENIX collaboration
Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were
recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
(RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of
RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy,
yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse
momenta (p_T), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, non-statistical
fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high p_T. The results
are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state
of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be

Saturation of azimuthal anisotropy in Au + Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 62 - 200 GeV
New measurements are presented for charged hadron azimuthal correlations at
mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 62.4 and 200 GeV. They are
compared to earlier measurements obtained at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV and in Pb+Pb
collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 17.2 GeV. Sizeable anisotropies are observed with
centrality and transverse momentum (p_T) dependence characteristic of elliptic
flow (v_2). For a broad range of centralities, the observed magnitudes and
trends of the differential anisotropy, v_2(p_T), change very little over the
collision energy range sqrt(s_NN) = 62-200 GeV, indicating saturation of the
excitation function for v_2 at these energies. Such a saturation may be
indicative of the dominance of a very soft equation of state for sqrt(s_NN) =
