    Pedagogical memory and the space of the postcolonial classroom : reading Dangarembga's Nervous Conditions

    This article addresses issues of the mnemonic space of the literature classroom by interrogating a classic text of African women’s writing, Tsitsi Dangaremnga’s Nervous Conditions (1988) for the ways it speaks about education in 1960s and 1970s late-colonial Rhodesia. The article suggests that the novel reviews and critiques a number of memorial strategies that were crucial to the colonial educational system, thereby facilitating a reflexive application of the novel’s concerns to the contexts in which it is often taught, that of today’s postcolonial classrooms. The article seeks to place Dangarembga’s novel in the context of its present moment, contemporary South Africa – that of the present critic’s site of practice, both pedagogical and scholarly, and that of many of this article’s readers. This present moment, in turn, is made up the many sites, successive and simultaneous, in which the novel’s work of memory is being re-activated in the minds of students as readers and writers. Via a dialogue between the textual past and the pedagogical present, one which is often subject to critical amnesia, the article seeks to inaugurate a debate on the nature of pedagogical memory in the space of the postcolonial university or high school literature classroom.http://www.informaworld.com/RSCRhb2013gv201

    Technological elites, the meritocracy, and postracial myths in Silicon Valley

    Entre as modernas elites tecnolĂłgicas digitais, os mitos da meritocracia e da façanha intelectual sĂŁo usados como marcadores de raça e gĂȘnero por uma supremacia branca masculina que consolida recursos de forma desproporcional em relação a pessoas nĂŁo brancas, principalmente negros, latinos e indĂ­genas. Os investimentos em mitos meritocrĂĄticos suprimem os questionamentos de racismo e discriminação, mesmo quando os produtos das elites digitais sĂŁo infundidos com marcadores de raça, classe e gĂȘnero. As lutas histĂłricas por inclusĂŁo social, polĂ­tica e econĂŽmica de negros, mulheres e outras classes desprotegidas tĂȘm implicado no reconhecimento da exclusĂŁo sistĂȘmica, do trabalho forçado e da privação de direitos estruturais, alĂ©m de compromissos com polĂ­ticas pĂșblicas dos EUA, como as açÔes afirmativas, que foram igualmente fundamentais para reformas polĂ­ticas voltadas para participação e oportunidades econĂŽmicas. A ascensĂŁo da tecnocracia digital tem sido, em muitos aspectos, antitĂ©tica a esses esforços no sentido de reconhecer raça e gĂȘnero como fatores cruciais para inclusĂŁo e oportunidades tecnocrĂĄticas. GĂȘnero.Among modern digital technology elites, myths of meritocracy and intellectual prowess are used as racial and gender markers of white male supremacy that disproportionately consolidate resources away from people of color, particularly African Americans, Latino/as and Native Americans. Investments in meritocratic myths suppress interrogations of racism and discrimination even as the products of digital elites are infused with racial, class, and gender markers. Longstanding struggles for social, political, and economic inclusion for African Americans, women, and other legally protected classes have been predicated upon the recognition of systemic exclusion, forced labor, and structural disenfranchisement, and commitments to US public policies like affirmative action have, likewise, been fundamental to political reforms geared to economic opportunity and participation. The rise of the digital technocracy has, in many ways, been antithetical to these sustained efforts to recognize race and gender as salient factors structuring technocratic opportunity and inclusion. This paper explores some of the ways in which discourses of Silicon Valley technocratic elites bolster investments in post-racialism as a pretext for re-consolidations of capital, in opposition to public policy commitments to end discriminatory labor practices. Through a careful analysis of the rise of digital technology companies, and a discussion of how technology elites work to mask everything from algorithmic to genetic inscriptions of race embedded in their products, we show how digital elites elide responsibility for their post-racial re-inscriptions of racial visibilities (and invisibilities). Using historical and critical discourse analysis, the paper reveals how myths of a digital meritocracy premised on a technocratic colorblindness emerge key to perpetuating gender and racial exclusions.Keywords: Technology.     'Vernacular Voices: Black British Poetry'

    ABSTRACT Black British poetry is the province of experimenting with voice and recording rhythms beyond the iambic pentameter. Not only in performance poetry and through the spoken word, but also on the page, black British poetry constitutes and preserves a sound archive of distinct linguistic varieties. In Slave Song (1984) and Coolie Odyssey (1988), David Dabydeen employs a form of Guyanese Creole in order to linguistically render and thus commemorate the experience of slaves and indentured labourers, respectively, with the earlier collection providing annotated translations into Standard English. James Berry, Louise Bennett, and Valerie Bloom adapt Jamaican Patois to celebrate Jamaican folk culture and at times to represent and record experiences and linguistic interactions in the postcolonial metropolis. Grace Nichols and John Agard use modified forms of Guyanese Creole, with Nichols frequently constructing gendered voices whilst Agard often celebrates linguistic playfulness. The borders between linguistic varieties are by no means absolute or static, as the emergence and marked growth of ‘London Jamaican’ (Mark Sebba) indicates. Asian British writer Daljit Nagra takes liberties with English for different reasons. Rather than having recourse to established Creole languages, and blending them with Standard English, his heteroglot poems frequently emulate ‘Punglish’, the English of migrants whose first language is Punjabi. Whilst it is the language prestige of London Jamaican that has been significantly enhanced since the 1990s, a fact not only confirmed by linguistic research but also by its transethnic uses both in the streets and on the page, Nagra’s substantial success and the mainstream attention he receives also indicate the clout of vernacular voices in poetry. They have the potential to connect with oral traditions and cultural memories, to record linguistic varieties, and to endow ‘street cred’ to authors and texts.     Transcriptomic analysis of grape berry softening during ripening

    Aims: The aim of this paper was to use recent transcriptomic tools available for grape in order to understand berry softening. Methods and results: A microarray bearing specific 50 mer oligonucleotide for 3,200 genes was used to study gene expression along 8 stages of berry development in Chardonnay and Shiraz berries. Transcripts corresponding to aquaporin genes and to genes involved in cell wall metabolism were studied in detail and ranked according to their pattern of expression. Conclusion: Several structural and regulatory genes whose expression pattern correlated with the late phases of ripening were identified.     La maturation de la baie implique de nombreux changements affectant le métabolisme et la compartimentation des acides organiques et des sucres, l'équilibre hydrique, la composition de la paroi cellulaire et en métabolites secondaires. Pour mieux comprendre les mécanismes du développement de la baie à l'échelle du génome, nous avons participé, en collaboration avec les laboratoires INRA UMR 619 de Bordeaux et UMR SPO Agro-Montpellier, au séquençage de plus de 15 000 EST. Une approche transcriptomique a apporté de nouvelles connaissances sur l'expression des gÚnes impliqués dans les modifications chimiques de la paroi cellulaire associées au ramollissement des baies, dans le déchargement des sucres, et dans la signalisation glucidique et hormonale. Cette étude a été approfondie par une approche ciblée en clonant de nouveaux transporteurs présumés d'hexoses (VvHT3, VvHT6, et VvpGlT), et un facteur de transcription VvSREBP potentiellement impliqué dans la signalisation glucidique.Berry ripening involves several modifications in sugar metabolism and partitioning, water balance, cell wall composition, and secondary metabolites content. For a better understanding of berry development mechanisms at the genomic scale, I participated to the sequencing of 15 000 EST, in collaboration with INRA UMR 619 of Bordeaux and UMR SPO Agro-Montpellier laboratories. A transcriptomic analysis was performed on berry development and on sugar signaling in grape cell suspensions using microarrays bearing 3175 and then 14500 unigenes. This yielded new information on the expression patterns of genes involved in cell wall modifications leading to berry softening and sugar unloading and partitioning. This approach was completed with a study focused on putative hexose transporters (VvHT3, VvHT6 and VvpGlT) and a putative sugar signaling transcrition factor (VvSREBP) which have been cloned.POITIERS-BU Sciences (861942102) / SudocSudocFranceF

    Pathways of Glucose Regulation of Monosaccharide Transport in Grape Cells

    Grape (Vitis vinifera) heterotrophic suspension-cultured cells were used as a model system to study glucose (Glc) transport and its regulation. Cells transported D-[14C]Glc according to simple Michaelis-Menten kinetics superimposed on first-order kinetics. The saturating component is a high-affinity, broad-specificity H1-dependent transport system (Km 5 0.05 mM). Glc concentration in the medium tightly regulated the transcription of VvHT1 (Vitis vinifera hexose transporter 1), a monosaccharide transporter previously characterized in grape berry, as well as VvHT1 protein amount and monosaccharide transport activity. All the remaining putative monosaccharide transporters identified so far in grape were poorly expressed and responded weakly to Glc. VvHT1 transcription was strongly repressed by Glc and 2-deoxy-D-Glc, but not by 3-O-methyl-D-Glc or Glc plus mannoheptulose, indicating the involvement of a hexokinase-dependent repression. 3-O-Methyl-D-Glc, which cannot be phosphorylated, and Glc plus mannoheptulose induced a decrease of transport activity caused by the reduction of VvHT1 protein in the plasma membrane without affecting VvHT1 transcript levels. This demonstrates hexokinase-independent posttranscriptional regulation. High Glc down-regulated VvHT1 transcription and Glc uptake, whereas low Glc increased those parameters. Present data provide an example showing control of plant sugar transporters by their own substrate both at transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels. VvHT1 protein has an important role in the massive import of monosaccharides into mesocarp cells of young grape berries because it was localized in plasma membranes of the early developing fruit. Protein amount decreased abruptly throughout fruit development as sugar content increases, consistent with the regulating role of Glc on VvHT1 expression found in suspension-cultured cells
