    Structure and composition of Fe-OM co-precipitates that form in soil-derived solutions

    Iron oxides represent a substantial fraction of secondary minerals and particularly affect the reactive properties of natural systems in which they formed, e.g. in soils and sediments. Yet, it is still obscure how transient conditions in the solution will affect the properties of in situ precipitated Fe oxides. Transient compositions, i.e. compositions that change with time, arise due to predominant non-equilibrium states in natural systems, e.g. between liquid and solid phases in soils. In this study, we characterize Fe-OM co-precipitates that formed in pH-neutral exfiltrates from anoxic topsoils under transient conditions. We applied soil column outflow experiments, in which Fe2+was discharged with the effluent from anoxic soil and subsequently oxidized in the effluent due to contact with air. Our study features three novel aspects being unconsidered so far: i) the transient composition of soil-derived solutions, ii) that pedogenic Fe oxides instead of Fe salts serve as major source for Fe2+ in soil solution and iii) the presence of exclusively soil-derived organic and inorganic compounds during precipitation. The experiments were carried out with two topsoil materials that differed in composition, texture and land use. Derived from Mössbauer spectroscopy, broad distributions in quadrupole splittings (0 - 2 mm s-1) and magnetic hyperfine fields (35 - 53 T) indicated the presence of low-crystalline ferrihydrite and even lower crystalline Fe phases in all Fe-OM co-precipitates. There was no unequivocal evidence for other Fe oxides, i.e. lepidocrocite and (nano)goethite. The Fe-OM co-precipitates contained inorganic (P, sulfate, silicate, Al, As) and organic compounds (proteins, polysaccharides), which were concurrently discharged from the soils. Their content in the Fe-OM co-precipitates was controlled by their respective concentration in the soil-derived solution. On a molar basis, OC and Fe were the main components in the Fe-OM co-precipitates (OC/Fe ratio = 0.5 - 2). The elemental composition of the Fe-OM co-precipitates was in accordance with the sequential precipitation of Fe(III)phosphates/arsenates prior to the formation of ferrihydrite. This explains decreasing Si contents in the Fe-OM co-precipitates with increasing availability of P. With respect to constant mean quadrupole splittings and slightly decreasing mean magnetic hyperfine fields, increasing contents of OC, P and Al in the Fe-OM co-precipitates did not further increase the structural disorder of the Fe polyhedra, while the crystallite interactions slightly decreased. Scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering revealed the coincidental presence of variably sized aggregates and a considerable amount of Fe-OM co-precipitates, which remained dispersed in solution for months. Thus, variably composed Fe-OM co-precipitates with highly diverse aggregate sizes and comparably constant poor crystallinity can be expected after the oxidation of Fe2+ in transient, soil-derived solutions

    Relationship Between Health Literacy and Unhealthy Lifestyle Behaviours in Older Adults Living in Switzerland: Does Social Connectedness Matter?

    Objectives: To investigate the association between health literacy (HL) and unhealthy lifestyle behaviours and to explore the moderating role of social connectedness in this relationship in older adults in Switzerland.Methods: We used data from 1,455 respondents to Wave 8 of the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Associations between the number of unhealthy lifestyle behaviours (smoking, risky alcohol consumption, suboptimal daily consumption of fruits/vegetables, lack of vigorous physical activity) and HL were examined using multivariable Poisson regression models, which allowed for interactions between HL and social connectedness to test the moderation hypothesis.Results: Respondents with inadequate HL were significantly more likely to have a higher number of unhealthy lifestyle behaviours than respondents with sufficient HL. We found a stronger positive association between inadequate HL and the number of unhealthy lifestyle behaviours among socially isolated individuals.Conclusion: Greater social connectedness seems to buffer the negative impact of inadequate HL on unhealthy lifestyle behaviours in older adults, highlighting the importance of good HL for healthy lifestyles, especially in individuals with low social reserve

    The Brazilian post war poets regarded some European authors, like TS Eliot, Paul Valéry and Fernando Pessoa, as paradigms of lyrics. Around the late 1940s, the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926), one of those praised writers, began to be read, translated and commented in Brazil. Even though some critics argue that the Brazilian poets at that time where focused solely in Rilke’s late works, Sonnets to Orpheus and Duino Elegies, those readings uncloak themselves mainly random and biographical. Amongst these Rilke’s Brazilian readers, the poet Geir Campos stands out for his early translations of Rilke's poems. Through selection and small changes between original and translation, Campos builds an image of the translated author. Such imagery reappears in Campos' own poetic work.A geração de 45 caracterizou-se, entre outras questões, pela eleição de grandes nomes da literatura europeia como paradigma da lírica, como T.S. Eliot, Paul Valéry e Fernando Pessoa. Entre estes, o poeta de língua alemã Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) passou, a partir do final dos anos 40, a ser lido, traduzido e comentado no Brasil. Ainda que parte da crítica defenda que os poetas da geração de 45 baseavam-se apenas na sua obra tardia, de Sonetos a Orfeu e Elegias de Duíno, a leitura dos poemas mostra-se muito mais assistemática e baseada em uma interpretação biografizante. Entre estes poetas, Geir Campos destaca-se pelo trabalho prematuro de traduzir os poemas de Rilke, ao mesmo tempo em que a escolha destes poemas e modificações no trânsito entre a língua-fonte e a língua-objeto forjam uma determinada imagem do autor traduzido, que encontra reflexos na própria obra poética de Campos

    An automated optimization pipeline for clinical-grade computer-assisted planning of high tibial osteotomies under consideration of weight-bearing

    3D preoperative planning for high tibial osteotomies (HTO) has increasingly replaced 2D planning but is complex, time-consuming and therefore expensive. Several interdependent clinical objectives and constraints have to be considered, which often requires multiple rounds of revisions between surgeons and biomedical engineers. We therefore developed an automated preoperative planning pipeline, which takes imaging data as an input to generate a ready-to-use, patient-specific planning solution. Deep-learning based segmentation and landmark localization was used to enable the fully automated 3D lower limb deformity assessment. A 2D-3D registration algorithm allowed the transformation of the 3D bone models into the weight-bearing state. Finally, an optimization framework was implemented to generate ready-to use preoperative plannings in a fully automated fashion, using a genetic algorithm to solve the multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem based on several clinical requirements and constraints. The entire pipeline was evaluated on a large clinical dataset of 53 patient cases who previously underwent a medial opening-wedge HTO. The pipeline was used to automatically generate preoperative solutions for these patients. Five experts blindly compared the automatically generated solutions to the previously generated manual plannings. The overall mean rating for the algorithm-generated solutions was better than for the manual solutions. In 90% of all comparisons, they were considered to be equally good or better than the manual solution. The combined use of deep learning approaches, registration methods and MOO can reliably produce ready-to-use preoperative solutions that significantly reduce human workload and related health costs

    MHC-II dynamics are maintained in HLA-DR allotypes to ensure catalyzed peptide exchange

    Presentation of antigenic peptides by major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) proteins determines T helper cell reactivity. The MHC-II genetic locus displays a large degree of allelic polymorphism influencing the peptide repertoire presented by the resulting MHC-II protein allotypes. During antigen processing, the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) molecule HLA-DM (DM) encounters these distinct allotypes and catalyzes exchange of the placeholder peptide CLIP by exploiting dynamic features of MHC-II. Here, we investigate 12 highly abundant CLIP-bound HLA-DRB1 allotypes and correlate dynamics to catalysis by DM. Despite large differences in thermodynamic stability, peptide exchange rates fall into a target range that maintains DM responsiveness. A DM-susceptible conformation is conserved in MHC-II molecules, and allosteric coupling between polymorphic sites affects dynamic states that influence DM catalysis. As exemplified for rheumatoid arthritis, we postulate that intrinsic dynamic features of peptide–MHC-II complexes contribute to the association of individual MHC-II allotypes with autoimmune disease

    Pre-mission InSights on the Interior of Mars

    Abstract The Interior exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Trans- port (InSight) Mission will focus on Mars’ interior structure and evolution. The basic structure of crust, mantle, and core form soon after accretion. Understanding the early differentiation process on Mars and how it relates to bulk composition is key to improving our understanding of this process on rocky bodies in our solar system, as well as in other solar systems. Current knowledge of differentiation derives largely from the layers observed via seismology on the Moon. However, the Moon’s much smaller diameter make it a poor analog with respect to interior pressure and phase changes. In this paper we review the current knowledge of the thickness of the crust, the diameter and state of the core, seismic attenuation, heat flow, and interior composition. InSight will conduct the first seismic and heat flow measurements of Mars, as well as more precise geodesy. These data reduce uncertainty in crustal thickness, core size and state, heat flow, seismic activity and meteorite impact rates by a factor of 3–10× relative to previous estimates. Based on modeling of seismic wave propagation, we can further constrain interior temperature, composition, and the location of phase changes. By combining heat flow and a well constrained value of crustal thickness, we can estimate the distribution of heat producing elements between the crust and mantle. All of these quantities are key inputs to models of interior convection and thermal evolution that predict the processes that control subsurface temperature, rates of volcanism, plume distribution and stability, and convective state. Collectively these factors offer strong controls on the overall evolution of the geology and habitability of Mars

Das erste Kapitel erörtert grundsätzliche didaktische Fragen zu digital unterstütztem Lernen und Arbeiten einschließlich der Rahmenbedingungen. Im zweiten Kapitel schließen sich Beiträge zur Kapazitätsentwicklung, zu Standards und zu digitalen Werkzeugen an. Das dritte Kapitel widmet sich konkreten Einzellösungen mit starkem Praxisbezug und hohem Transferpotenzial zum digitalisierten Arbeiten und Lernen im Bausektor und im Metallbereich. Das abschließende vierte Kapitel präsentiert übergreifend nutzbare und frei zugängliche Online-Angebote wie einen Medienpool für Bildungszwecke, eine Lernmedien-Datenbank und ein hybrides Lernsystem mit virtuellem 3D-Gebäudemodell. The first chapter discusses fundamental didactic questions about digitally supported learning and working, including the framework conditions. The second chapter picks contributions on capacity development, standards, and digital tools out as central themes. The third chapter is dedicated to concrete specific solutions with strong practical relevance and high transfer potential for digitized work and learning in the construction sector and in the metal sector. The final fourth chapter presents comprehensive and freely accessible online offers such as a media pool for educational purposes, a learning media database and a hybrid learning system with a virtual 3D building model.     Arecibo PALFA survey and Einstein@Home: Binary pulsar discovery by volunteer computing

    We report the discovery of the 20.7ms binary pulsar J1952+2630, made using the distributed computing project Einstein@Home in Pulsar ALFA survey observations with the Arecibo telescope. Follow-up observations with the Arecibo telescope confirm the binary nature of the system. We obtain a circular orbital solution with an orbital period of 9.4hr, a projected orbital radius of 2.8lt-s, and a mass function of f = 0.15 M ⊙ by analysis of spin period measurements. No evidence of orbital eccentricity is apparent; we set a 2σ upper limit e ≲ 1.7 × 10 -3 . The orbital parameters suggest a massive white dwarf companion with a minimum mass of 0.95 M ⊙ , assuming a pulsar mass of 1.4 M ⊙ . Most likely, this pulsar belongs to the rare class of intermediate-mass binary pulsars. Future timing observations will aim to determine the parameters of this system further, measure relativistic effects, and elucidate the nature of the companion star. © 2011.
