Model predictive control scheme for rotorcraft inverse simulation
A novel inverse simulation scheme is proposed for application to rotorcraft dynamic
models. The algorithm is based on a model predictive control scheme that allows for a
faster solution of the inverse simulation step, working on a lower{order, simplified helicopter
model. The control action is then propagated forward in time on a more complete model.
The algorithm compensates for discrepancies between the models by means of a simple
guidance scheme.
The proposed approach allows for the assessment of handling quality potential on the
basis of the most sophisticated model, adopted for the forward simulation, while keeping
model complexity to a minimum level for the computationally more demanding inverse
simulation algorithm. This allows for a faster solution of the inverse problem, if compared
with the computational time necessary for solving the same problem on the basis of the
full{order, more complex model. At the same time, the results are not aected by modeling
approximations at the basis of the simplied one. The reported results, for an articulated
blade, single main rotor helicopter model demonstrate the validity of the approach

Baffin Island Expedition, 1953: A Preliminary Field Report
Contains description and brief summaries of results of the second Baffin Island Expedition of the Arctic Institute of North America, May-Sept. 1953. The 13-man party carried out a program in the Penny Highland region of Cumberland Peninsula, centering on Pangnirtung Pass. Glaciological work on the Penny Icecap and Highway Glacier included studies of glacier physics, seismic work, and meteorological observations on bedrock geology and structure are given. Corrie formation and the geomorphology of Pangnirtung Pass were studied. Specimens of local fauna were collected and biological studies of some species were made. Comparisons of the vegetation of Penny Highland and East and North Greenland were made through extensive plant collections. Eight peaks were climbed and their altitudes determined. A list of 17 new names approved by the Canadian Board on Geographical Names is appended
Evidence for Water Ie on the Moon: Results for Anomalous Polar Craters from the LRO Mini-RF Imaging Radar
The Mini-RF radar instrument on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft mapped both lunar poles in two different RF wavelengths (complete mapping at 12.6 cm S-band and partial mapping at 4.2 cm X-band) in two look directions, removing much of the ambiguity of previous Earth- and spacecraft-based radar mapping of the Moon's polar regions. The poles are typical highland terrain, showing expected values of radar cross section (albedo) and circular polarization ratio (CPR). Most fresh craters display high values of CPR in and outside the crater rim; the pattern of these CPR distributions is consistent with high levels of wavelength-scale surface roughness associated with the presence of block fields, impact melt flows, and fallback breccia. A different class of polar crater exhibits high CPR only in their interiors, interiors that are both permanently dark and very cold (less than 100 K). Application of scattering models developed previously suggests that these anomalously high-CPR deposits exhibit behavior consistent with the presence of water ice. If this interpretation is correct, then both poles may contain several hundred million tons of water in the form of relatively "clean" ice, all within the upper couple of meters of the lunar surface. The existence of significant water ice deposits enables both long-term human habitation of the Moon and the creation of a permanent cislunar space transportation system based upon the harvest and use of lunar propellant
Experimental infection of chickens by a flagellated motile strain of Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Gallinarum
Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Gallinarum (SG) causes fowl typhoid (FT), a septicaemic disease which can result in high mortality in poultry flocks. The absence of flagella in SG is thought to favour systemic invasion, since bacterial recognition via Toll-like receptor (TLR)-5 does not take place during the early stages of FT. In the present study, chicks susceptible to FT were inoculated with a wild type SG (SG) or its flagellated motile derivative (SG Fla+). In experiment 1, mortality and clinical signs were assessed, whereas in experiment 2, gross pathology, histopathology, systemic invasion and immune responses were evaluated. SG Fla+ infection resulted in later development of clinical signs, lower mortality, lower bacterial numbers in the liver and spleen, and less severe pathological changes compared to SG. The CD8+ T lymphocyte population was higher in the livers of chicks infected with SG at 4 days post-inoculation (dpi). Chicks infected with SG had increased expression of interleukin (IL)-6 mRNA in the caecal tonsil at 1 dpi and increased expression of IL-18 mRNA in the spleen at 4 dpi. In contrast, the CD4+ T lymphocyte population was higher at 6 dpi in the livers of birds infected with SG Fla+. Therefore, flagella appeared to modulate the chicken immune response towards a CD4+ T profile, resulting in more efficient bacterial clearance from systemic sites and milder infection
Relativistic Wigner Function Approach to Neutrino Propagation in Matter
In this work we study the propagation of massive Dirac neutrinos in matter
with flavor mixing, using statistical techniques based on Relativistic Wigner
Functions. First, we consider neutrinos in equilibrium within the Hartree
approximation, and obtain the corresponding relativistic dispersion relations
and effective masses. After this, we analyze the same system out of
equilibrium. We verify that, under the appropiate physical conditions, the well
known equations for the MSW effect are recovered. The techniques we used here
appear as an alternative to describe neutrino properties and transport
equations in a consistent way.Comment: 18 pages, no figures. Revte
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
