From studies carried out in Cienfuegos, there has been weakness in the gender perspective in the sciences related to Information and Communication Technologies, in addition the incorporation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics careers is insufficient. Therefore, a project has been designed that has as one of its tasks to identify, from the gender perspective, elements that characterize the academic reality of the teaching of programming at the University of Cienfuegos "Carlos Rafael Rodríguez". The communication reports the results of the quantitative-descriptive research carried out that aimed to describe the academic performance in the subjects related to programming, from a gender perspective, in those enrolled in the 2016-2017 academic year and that culminated in 2022 in the Computer Engineering career, from the answer to the questions: In the first five subjects related to programming, do the results of men show any difference compared to that of women? And what is the result of the analysis of the graduation of women with respect to men at the end of the fifth year of the career? The analysis of documents was used as a fundamental method, as well as statistical descriptors such as percentage and medians. The Mann-Whitney U test revealed that women have a lower academic performance than male students, however, the percentage of graduation of women was higher than men

Dengue has become in a public health problem, cases has been increasing in the last years. In Colombia this disease is characterized by being in an outbreak, since the 90% of the country has the favorable conditions so the vector Aedes Aegypti and a lesser extent Aedes Albopictus. For these reason health entities from Colombia and all over the world have had to develop monitoring and control programs for these disease and try to decrease the number people affected for this virus. Objective: Identify sociodemographic and environmental determinants on dengue’s incidence in the municipalities of Anapoima and La Mesa Cundinamarca between the years 2007-2015.Materials and methods: The present study is divide in two components, first component is an ecological design of time series of dengue’s monthly cases and meteorological data and de second component is a cross-sectional analytical design, in which the sociodemographic and environmental characteristics were detailed from the population of both municipalities. The instrument of data recollection for the first component was a data base from IDEAM, for the second component, a poll was utilized with 21 questions about social-environmental determinants. After obtaining the information, these were entered in Excel 2013 version, SPSS and Epidat 3.1-4.1 in order to do the analysis. Results: It was found that in both municipalities, most cases of dengue were present in the lower economical stratum. In relation with meteorological variables it was evident that in La Mesa the highest temperature and average temperature are related with the cases of dengue, in contrast to relative humidity that wasn’t significant in the development of the disease. Conclusions: It was observed that there is a direct relationship between temperature and dengue disease and also an inverse relationship between the disease’s incidence and life conditions from the population, with the lower stratum being the most affected. PregradoMédico(a) Cirujan

The lack of optimal models to evaluate novel agents is delaying the development of effective immunotherapies against human breast cancer (BC). In this prospective open label study, we applied neoadjuvant intratumoral immunotherapy with empty cowpea mosaic virus-like particles (eCPMV) to 11 companion dogs diagnosed with canine mammary cancer (CMC), a spontaneous tumor resembling human BC. We found that two neoadjuvant intratumoral eCPMV injections resulted in tumor reduction in injected tumors in all patients and in noninjected tumors located in the ipsilateral and contralateral mammary chains of injected dogs. Tumor reduction was independent of clinical stage, tumor size, histopathologic grade, and tumor molecular subtype. RNA-seq-based analysis of injected tumors indicated a decrease in DNA replication activity and an increase in activated dendritic cell infiltration in the tumor microenvironment. Immunohistochemistry analysis demonstrated significant intratumoral increases in neutrophils, T and B lymphocytes, and plasma cells. eCPMV intratumoral immunotherapy demonstrated antitumor efficacy without any adverse effects. This novel immunotherapy has the potential for improving outcomes for human BC patients

Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, individuals with clonal mosaic events (clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations and/or loss of chromosome Y) showed an increased risk of COVID-19 lethality

Repositioning of the global epicentre of non-optimal cholesterol

High blood cholesterol is typically considered a feature of wealthy western countries(1,2). However, dietary and behavioural determinants of blood cholesterol are changing rapidly throughout the world(3) and countries are using lipid-lowering medications at varying rates. These changes can have distinct effects on the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol, which have different effects on human health(4,5). However, the trends of HDL and non-HDL cholesterol levels over time have not been previously reported in a global analysis. Here we pooled 1,127 population-based studies that measured blood lipids in 102.6 million individuals aged 18 years and older to estimate trends from 1980 to 2018 in mean total, non-HDL and HDL cholesterol levels for 200 countries. Globally, there was little change in total or non-HDL cholesterol from 1980 to 2018. This was a net effect of increases in low- and middle-income countries, especially in east and southeast Asia, and decreases in high-income western countries, especially those in northwestern Europe, and in central and eastern Europe. As a result, countries with the highest level of non-HDL cholesterol-which is a marker of cardiovascular riskchanged from those in western Europe such as Belgium, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Malta in 1980 to those in Asia and the Pacific, such as Tokelau, Malaysia, The Philippines and Thailand. In 2017, high non-HDL cholesterol was responsible for an estimated 3.9 million (95% credible interval 3.7 million-4.2 million) worldwide deaths, half of which occurred in east, southeast and south Asia. The global repositioning of lipid-related risk, with non-optimal cholesterol shifting from a distinct feature of high-income countries in northwestern Europe, north America and Australasia to one that affects countries in east and southeast Asia and Oceania should motivate the use of population-based policies and personal interventions to improve nutrition and enhance access to treatment throughout the world.Peer reviewe
