    CHRONIC RHINOSINUSITIS IN CYSTIC FIBROSIS PATIENTS: SMELL EVALUATION

    Cystic Fibrosis (CF) involves the upper airways with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) causing nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, mouth breathing, facial pain, and olfactory dysfunction. Twelve to 71% of CF patients report smelling alterations impacting nutrition and quality of life. The aim was to study olfaction performance in CF patients with CRS that worsens quality of life. One hundred and twenty-one subjects were enrolled in this study. Seventy-one had CF and underwent ear, nose, and throat evaluation with nasal endoscopy, SNOT-22, VAS and ā€œSniffinā€™ Sticksā€. Fifty subjects were age-matched with healthy controls. All 71 CF patients were affected by CRS; 59/71 (83.1%) had CRS without nasal polyps and 12/71 (16.9%) had CRS with early nasal polyps. None of the 50 controls had CRS. Total SNOTT-22 mean values in the 71 CF patients was 38.10 Ā± 21.08 pts. If considering only the 59 CF patients without nasal polyps the SNOTT-22 mean value was 36.76 Ā± 21.52 pts. Moreover, based on the VAS scores, the degree of nasal symptoms was classified as mild for facial pain, smell alteration, nasal discharge, and sneezing and resulted in moderate symptoms for nasal blockage and headache. Among the CF patients, 55/71 (76.5%) declared normosmia while the smelling ability assessed by ā€œSniffinā€™ Sticksā€ showed that only 4/71 (5.63%) were normosmic, 58 (81.69%) were hyposmic, and 9 (12.68%) were anosmic. In the controls 41(82%) were normosmic, 9 (18%) were hyposmic, and none were reported anosmia (p < 0.001). The study confirms that most CF patients have a relevant olfactory impairment, although only a low percentage declare it. A careful evaluation with simple and rapid tests helps to select the patients that may benefit from specific therapies

    Efficacy and safety of once-weekly bortezomib in multiple myeloma patients

    AbstractIn a recent phase 3 trial, bortezomib-melphalan-prednisone-thalidomide followed by maintenance treatment with bortezomib-thalidomide demonstrated superior efficacy compared with bortezomib-melphalan-prednisone. To decrease neurologic toxicities, the protocol was amended and patients in both arms received once-weekly instead of the initial twice-weekly bortezomib infusions: 372 patients received once-weekly and 139 twice-weekly bortezomib. In this post-hoc analysis we assessed the impact of the schedule change on clinical outcomes and safety. Long-term outcomes appeared similar: 3-year progression-free survival rate was 50% in the once-weekly and 47% in the twice-weekly group (P > .999), and 3-year overall survival rate was 88% and 89%, respectively (P = .54). The complete response rate was 30% in the once-weekly and 35% in the twice-weekly group (P = .27). Nonhematologic grade 3/4 adverse events were reported in 35% of once-weekly patients and 51% of twice-weekly patients (P = .003). The incidence of grade 3/4 peripheral neuropathy was 8% in the once-weekly and 28% in the twice-weekly group (P < .001); 5% of patients in the once-weekly and 15% in the twice-weekly group discontinued therapy because of peripheral neuropathy (P < .001).     Prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection in patients with lymphoproliferative disorders in Southern Turkey

    PubMedID: 10424729Anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody prevalence was investigated in 228 patients with lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs). Twenty-six of 228 (11.40%) patients with LPDs were positive for anti-HCV which was higher than the donor population (P = 0.0007). Nine of 98 cases with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, five of 47 cases with multiple myeloma, seven of 36 cases with Hodgkin's disease, four of 38 cases with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and one of nine cases with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia had anti-HCV antibody. In all patients, odds ratio (OR) for anti-HCV was 24.09. This value was higher in patients less than 35 years as 62.04 for below 25 years and 32.00 for between 25-35 years. Our findings suggest that HCV infection might be a causative and/or contributing factor in lymphoproliferation

    Jet energy measurement with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV

    The jet energy scale and its systematic uncertainty are determined for jets measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of āˆšs = 7TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 38 pb-1. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm with distance parameters R=0. 4 or R=0. 6. Jet energy and angle corrections are determined from Monte Carlo simulations to calibrate jets with transverse momenta pTā‰„20 GeV and pseudorapidities {pipe}Ī·{pipe}<4. 5. The jet energy systematic uncertainty is estimated using the single isolated hadron response measured in situ and in test-beams, exploiting the transverse momentum balance between central and forward jets in events with dijet topologies and studying systematic variations in Monte Carlo simulations. The jet energy uncertainty is less than 2. 5 % in the central calorimeter region ({pipe}Ī·{pipe}<0. 8) for jets with 60ā‰¤pT<800 GeV, and is maximally 14 % for pT<30 GeV in the most forward region 3. 2ā‰¤{pipe}Ī·{pipe}<4. 5. The jet energy is validated for jet transverse momenta up to 1 TeV to the level of a few percent using several in situ techniques by comparing a well-known reference such as the recoiling photon pT, the sum of the transverse momenta of tracks associated to the jet, or a system of low-pT jets recoiling against a high-pT jet. More sophisticated jet calibration schemes are presented based on calorimeter cell energy density weighting or hadronic properties of jets, aiming for an improved jet energy resolution and a reduced flavour dependence of the jet response. The systematic uncertainty of the jet energy determined from a combination of in situ techniques is consistent with the one derived from single hadron response measurements over a wide kinematic range. The nominal corrections and uncertainties are derived for isolated jets in an inclusive sample of high-pT jets. Special cases such as event topologies with close-by jets, or selections of samples with an enhanced content of jets originating from light quarks, heavy quarks or gluons are also discussed and the corresponding uncertainties are determined.     Measurement of the inclusive and dijet cross-sections of b-jets in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The inclusive and dijet production cross-sections have been measured for jets containing b-hadrons (b-jets) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements use data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb^-1. The b-jets are identified using either a lifetime-based method, where secondary decay vertices of b-hadrons in jets are reconstructed using information from the tracking detectors, or a muon-based method where the presence of a muon is used to identify semileptonic decays of b-hadrons inside jets. The inclusive b-jet cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum in the range 20 < pT < 400 GeV and rapidity in the range |y| < 2.1. The bbbar-dijet cross-section is measured as a function of the dijet invariant mass in the range 110 < m_jj < 760 GeV, the azimuthal angle difference between the two jets and the angular variable chi in two dijet mass regions. The results are compared with next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. Good agreement is observed between the measured cross-sections and the predictions obtained using POWHEG + Pythia. MC@NLO + Herwig shows good agreement with the measured bbbar-dijet cross-section.     Observation of associated near-side and away-side long-range correlations in āˆšsNN=5.02ā€‰ā€‰TeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector

    Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle (Ī”Ļ•) and pseudorapidity (Ī”Ī·) are measured in āˆšsNN=5.02ā€‰ā€‰TeV p+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using approximately 1ā€‰ā€‰Ī¼b-1 of data as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and the transverse energy (Ī£ETPb) summed over 3.1<Ī·<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range (2<|Ī”Ī·|<5) ā€œnear-sideā€ (Ī”Ļ•āˆ¼0) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing Ī£ETPb. A long-range ā€œaway-sideā€ (Ī”Ļ•āˆ¼Ļ€) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small Ī£ETPb, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in Ī”Ī· and Ī”Ļ•) and Ī£ETPb dependence. The resultant Ī”Ļ• correlation is approximately symmetric about Ļ€/2, and is consistent with a dominant cosā”2Ī”Ļ• modulation for all Ī£ETPb ranges and particle pT

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbāˆ’1 of protonā€“proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Evidence for the Higgs-boson Yukawa coupling to tau leptons with the ATLAS detector

    Results of a search for H ā†’ Ļ„ Ļ„ decays are presented, based on the full set of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2011 and 2012. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fbāˆ’1 and 20.3 fbāˆ’1 at centre-of-mass energies of āˆšs = 7 TeV and āˆšs = 8 TeV respectively. All combinations of leptonic (Ļ„ ā†’ `Ī½Ī½ĀÆ with ` = e, Āµ) and hadronic (Ļ„ ā†’ hadrons Ī½) tau decays are considered. An excess of events over the expected background from other Standard Model processes is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.5 (3.4) standard deviations. This excess provides evidence for the direct coupling of the recently discovered Higgs boson to fermions. The measured signal strength, normalised to the Standard Model expectation, of Āµ = 1.43 +0.43 āˆ’0.37 is consistent with the predicted Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at sāˆš=8 TeV with ATLAS

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sāˆš=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H ā†’ Ī³Ī³ decay channel using 20.3 fbāˆ’1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp ā†’ H ā†’ Ī³Ī³ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 Ā±9.4(stat.) āˆ’ā€‰2.9 +ā€‰3.2 (syst.) Ā±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations
