Baron Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall (1774–1856) was an outstanding orientalist, diplomat, and pioneer in the studies of history and philology of the Middle East. At the Library of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which is a department of the Library of the Academy of Sciences and at the same time the oldest and richest library of Oriental studies in Russia, there is a valuable and voluminous collection of works authored by the outstanding Austrian Orientalist Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall devoted to various spheres of knowledge, mostly history and literature. This article examines the history of one of the most important research works by J. von Hammer-Purgstall, i.e. his ten-volume Geschichte des osmanischen Reiches (1827–1835). Referring to numerous sources, this work covers the historical period from the establishment of the Ottoman Empire to the Treaty of K???k Kaynarca of 1774 and is considered to be the first modern historical synthesis. The Geschichte des osmanischen Reiches has not lost its relevance today, and, despite some serious mistakes, continues to arouse admiration thanks to new information introduced by the author. His memoirs Erinnerungen aus meinem Leben. 1774–1852 occupy a special place among a large number of similar works kept in the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In his memoirs, J. von Hammer-Purgstall provides a detailed description of his childhood, talks about his education in the Oriental Academy, and the languages he learnt there. Further along the text, the author gives an account of his diplomatic life in Constantinople, and the Austrian ‘diplomatic ins and outs’, portrays Western and Russian diplomats, as well as a number of Turkish figures. The value of the works by J. von Hammer-Purgstall increases even more due to the fact that they are based on original materials and sources, some of which are known today due to his findings

This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC. A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13  TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb−1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015–2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV

A search for the direct production of the supersymmetric partners ofτ-leptons (staus) in final stateswith two hadronically decayingτ-leptons is presented. The analysis uses a dataset of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of139fb−1, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LargeHadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant deviation from the expected StandardModel background is observed. Limits are derived in scenarios of direct production of stau pairs with eachstau decaying into the stable lightest neutralino and oneτ-lepton in simplified models where the two staumass eigenstates are degenerate. Stau masses from 120 GeV to 390 GeV are excluded at 95% confidencelevel for a massless lightest neutralino

Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model. In addition, limits on the production of an invisibly decaying Higgs-like boson leading to similar topologies in the final state are presente

Electron and photon energy calibration with the ATLAS detector using 2015–2016 LHC proton-proton collision data

    Get PDF
This paper presents the electron and photon energy calibration obtained with the ATLAS detector using about 36 fb−1 of LHC proton-proton collision data recorded at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. The different calibration steps applied to the data and the optimization of the reconstruction of electron and photon energies are discussed. The absolute energy scale is set using a large sample of Z boson decays into electron-positron pairs. The systematic uncertainty in the energy scale calibration varies between 0.03% to 0.2% in most of the detector acceptance for electrons with transverse momentum close to 45 GeV. For electrons with transverse momentum of 10 GeV the typical uncertainty is 0.3% to 0.8% and it varies between 0.25% and 1% for photons with transverse momentum around 60 GeV. Validations of the energy calibration with J/ψ → e + e − decays and radiative Z boson decays are also presented

Study of the hard double-parton scattering contribution to inclusive four-lepton production in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
The inclusive production of four isolated charged leptons in pp collisions is analysed for the presence of hard double-parton scattering, using 20.2fb−1of data recorded in the ATLAS detector at the LHC at centre-of-mass energy √s=8TeV. In the four-lepton invariant-mass range of 80 <m4<1000GeV, an artificial neural network is used to enhance the separation between single-and double-parton scattering based on the kinematics of the four leptons in the final state. An upper limit on the fraction of events originating from double-parton scattering is determined at 95% confidence level to be fDPS=0.042, which results in an estimated lower limit on the effective cross section at 95% confidence level of 1.0mb

Search for large missing transverse momentum in association with one top-quark in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
This paper describes a search for events with one top-quark and large missing transverse momentum in the final state. Data collected during 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS experiment from 13 TeV proton–proton collisions at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 are used. Two channels are considered, depending on the leptonic or the hadronic decays of the W boson from the top quark. The obtained results are interpreted in the context of simplified models for dark-matter production and for the single production of a vector-like T quark. In the absence of significant deviations from the Standard Model background expectation, 95% confidence-level upper limits on the corresponding production cross-sections are obtained and these limits are translated into constraints on the parameter space of the models considered
