Perfect Andreev Reflection of Helical Edge Modes in InAs/GaSb Quantum Wells
We present an experimental study of inverted InAs/GaSb composite quantum
wells in the hybridization regime and contacted by superconducting electrodes.
A front gate is used to vary the Fermi level into the mini-gap, where recent
experiments indicate existence of helical edge modes [arXiv:1105.0137]. Zero
bias dips in differential resistance are observed across the mini-gap,
suggesting transport dominated by Andreev reflection processes. Evolution of
the mini-gap differential resistance with applied bias as well as measured
mini-gap excess current of 150 nA are in good agreement with the prediction of
perfect Andreev reflection of the helical edge modes, which is necessitated by
the absence of back-scattering channels. The perfect Andreev reflection occurs
in spite of a finite barrier at the interface and shows strong sensitivity to
time-reversal breaking - hallmarks of the helical nature of quantum spin Hall
edges
Local anisotropy and giant enhancement of local electromagnetic fields in fractal aggregates of metal nanoparticles
We have shown within the quasistatic approximation that the giant
fluctuations of local electromagnetic field in random fractal aggregates of
silver nanospheres are strongly correlated with a local anisotropy factor S
which is defined in this paper. The latter is a purely geometrical parameter
which characterizes the deviation of local environment of a given nanosphere in
an aggregate from spherical symmetry. Therefore, it is possible to predict the
sites with anomalously large local fields in an aggregate without explicitly
solving the electromagnetic problem. We have also demonstrated that the average
(over nanospheres) value of S does not depend noticeably on the fractal
dimension D, except when D approaches the trivial limit D=3. In this case, as
one can expect, the average local environment becomes spherically symmetrical
and S approaches zero. This corresponds to the well-known fact that in trivial
aggregates fluctuations of local electromagnetic fields are much weaker than in
fractal aggregates. Thus, we find that, within the quasistatics, the
large-scale geometry does not have a significant impact on local
electromagnetic responses in nanoaggregates in a wide range of fractal
dimensions. However, this prediction is expected to be not correct in
aggregates which are sufficiently large for the intermediate- and
radiation-zone interaction of individual nanospheres to become important.Comment: 9 pages 9 figures. No revisions from previous version; only figure

Protic Ionic Liquid as Reagent, Catalyst, and Solvent: 1-Methylimidazolium Thiocyanate
We propose a new concept of the triple role of protic ionic liquids with nucleophilic anions: a) a regenerable solvent, b) a Brønsted acid inducing diverse transformations via general acid catalysis, and c) a source of a nucleophile. The efficiency of this strategy was demonstrated using thiocyanate-based protic ionic liquids for the ring-opening of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes. A wide variety of activated cyclopropanes were found to react with 1-methylimidazolium thiocyanate under mild metal-free conditions via unusual nitrogen attack of the ambident thiocyanate ion on the electrophilic center of the three-membered ring affording pyrrolidine-2-thiones bearing donor and acceptor substituents at the C(5) and C(3) atoms, respectively, in a single time-efficient step. The ability of 1-methylimidazolium thiocyanate to serve as a triplex reagent was exemplarily illustrated by (4+2)-annulation with 1-acyl-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)cyclopropane, epoxide ring-opening and other organic transformations
Mesons and baryons in a soft-wall holographic approach
We discuss a holographic soft-wall model developed for the description of
mesons and baryons with adjustable quantum numbers n, J, L, S. This approach is
based on an action which describes hadrons with broken conformal invariance and
which incorporates confinement through the presence of a background dilaton

Cellular gene expression during Hepatitis C virus replication as revealed by Ribosome Profiling
Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects human liver hepatocytes, often leading to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It is believed that chronic infection alters host gene expression and favors HCC development. In particular, HCV replication in Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) derived membranes induces chronic ER stress. How HCV replication affects host mRNA translation and transcription at a genome wide level is not yet known. Methods: We used Riboseq (Ribosome Profiling) to analyze transcriptome and translatome changes in the Huh-7.5 hepatocarcinoma cell line replicating HCV for 6 days. Results: Established viral replication does not cause global changes in host gene expression—only around 30 genes are significantly differentially expressed. Upregulated genes are related to ER stress and HCV replication, and several regulated genes are known to be involved in HCC development. Some mRNAs (PPP1R15A/GADD34, DDIT3/CHOP, and TRIB3) may be subject to upstream open reading frame (uORF) mediated translation control. Transcriptional downregulation mainly affects mitochondrial respiratory chain complex core subunit genes. Conclusion: After establishing HCV replication, the lack of global changes in cellular gene expression indicates an adaptation to chronic infection, while the downregulation of mitochondrial respiratory chain genes indicates how a virus may further contribute to cancer cell-like metabolic reprogramming (“Warburg effect”) even in the hepatocellular carcinoma cells used here
Novel Budesonide Suppository and Standard Budesonide Rectal Foam Induce High Rates of Clinical Remission and Mucosal Healing in Active Ulcerative Proctitis : a Randomised, Controlled, Non-inferiority Trial

Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation.BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Proctitis is the least extensive type of ulcerative colitis, for which rectal therapy is rarely studied and is underused. This study evaluated the efficacy, safety, and patient's preference of a novel formulation of budesonide suppository 4 mg, compared with a commercially available budesonide rectal foam 2 mg, for the treatment of mild to moderate ulcerative proctitis. METHODS: This was a randomised, double-blind, double-dummy, active-controlled trial. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either budesonide 4 mg suppository or budesonide 2 mg foam once daily for 8 weeks. The co-primary endpoints were changes from baseline to Week 8 in clinical symptoms, for which clinical remission was defined as having a modified Ulcerative Colitis-Disease Activity Index [UC-DAI] subscore for stool frequency of 0 or 1 and a subscore for rectal bleeding of 0, and mucosal healing, defined as having a modified UC-DAI subscore for mucosal appearance of 0 or 1. Using a more stringent criterion, we additionally analysed deepened mucosal healing, which was defined as a mucosal appearance subscore of 0. Patient's preference, physician's global assessment, and quality of life were also assessed and analysed. RESULTS: Overall, 286 and 291 patients were included in the 4 mg suppository and 2 mg foam groups, respectively. Budesonide 4 mg suppository met the prespecified criterion for non-inferiority to the 2 mg foam in both co-primary endpoints of clinical remission and mucosal healing. Secondary endpoints consistently supported the non-inferiority of the suppository. Trends in favour of the suppository were observed in the subgroup of mesalazine non-responders. More patients reported a preference for the suppository over rectal foam. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with ulcerative proctitis, budesonide 4 mg suppository was non-inferior to budesonide 2 mg foam in efficacy, and both were safe and well tolerated.publishersversionPeer reviewe
Search for exotic resonances decaying into WZ/ZZ in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV

The analysis uses a data sample of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at √s=7 TeV in 2011. No significant excess is observed in the mass distribution of the VZ candidates compared with the background expectation from standard model processes. Model-dependent upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the product of the cross section times the branching fraction of hypothetical particles decaying to the VZ final state as a function of mass. Sequential standard model W′ bosons with masses between 700 and 940 GeV are excluded. Measurement of associated Z plus charm production in proton-proton collisions at root s=8TeV
A study of the associated production of a Z boson and a charm quark jet (Z + c), and a comparison to production with a b quark jet (Z + b), in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV are presented. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb(-1), collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The Z boson candidates are identified through their decays into pairs of electrons or muons. Jets originating from heavy flavour quarks are identified using semileptonic decays of c or b flavoured hadrons and hadronic decays of charm hadrons. The measurements are performed in the kinematic region with two leptons with pT(l) > 20 GeV, vertical bar eta(l)vertical bar 25 GeV and vertical bar eta(jet)vertical bar Z + c + X) B(Z -> l(+)l(-)) = 8.8 +/- 0.5 (stat)+/- 0.6 (syst) pb. The ratio of the Z+c and Z+b production cross sections is measured to be sigma(pp -> Z+c+X)/sigma (pp -> Z+b+X) = 2.0 +/- 0.2 (stat)+/- 0.2 (syst). The Z+c production cross section and the cross section ratio are also measured as a function of the transverse momentum of theZ boson and of the heavy flavour jet.
